I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.
System:
OpenSuse 11.2 (it is a pretty fresh install)
OpenSoundSystem 4.2
KDE 4.4 (updated from factory repos)
ive installed ubuntu 9.01 on a external HDD. I have windows on my internal HDD and whenever I unplugged the USB HDD and turn on the computer I get Failed To Load Grub. I fixed this by restoring windows boot.ini file but now when I try boot from the external HDD (USB) it says Failed To Open Operating System and nothing else.

At uni I did this for a couple of reasons, primarily to connect to trackers for bittorrent. I would get these messages fairly often but I never thought much of it because I figured I was just loosing packets over the network or something (understandable in my situation). At home I decided to continue to use this method because that computer is set up in DMZ and is very useful. I havn't received many of these messages but recently all my torrents stalled and I had a whole bunch of these messages. Is it possible my computer just cant handle all the network connections (it's a 2ghz AMD running debian)? What exactly do these messages mean? Is there any way to optimize my connection in any way?
I cannot get access to my external hard disk. It says as in the "SUBJECT" above. What should I do? I installed Debian XFCE testing.

I use the automatic upgrades - they hardly ever cause a problem... until now.
I just applied this upgrade (linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64) and a restart was required (normal under when upgrading the image).
After the restart my SIP phone software didn't startup - didn't even get any errors in the log file...
So I checked the "System Monitor" to see if the process was running but not displayed... the System Monitor generates a core dump...
I hope there will be another update to solve this really quickly.... not sure what else is broken. Firefox is still working and so is Skype.
I have a user who has recently switched to Debian 7 (from Windows). While reinstalling his PC I foolisly went straight to install the ATi proprietry drivers (as every computer I have come across this in this building is running with an ATi card). Once install I found out that the computer actually had on board Intel Haswell graphics. So I installed the correct driver and uninstalled the ATi one. Since then System Settings refuse to open they are forever "Starting". The user is running on Gnome Classic as Gnome 3 refuses to start (in what I am starting to suspect is a linked issue).
Running "gnome-control-center" from the command line details the following error:

I upgraded my system today to 5.0.8 lenny. Kernel is Linux debian 2.6.26-2-686. After upgrade my grub has changed and windows has gone. Anyway I rewrite it but this time when I choose Windows at first boot it gives me error like 0xc000000f, The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. And then I open gparted and check the ntfs disk and it gives me an error like `the device does not have a valid ntfs`How can I fix it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen i open some video on the net, the system logs out (especially when i open ..... video). I suspect its flash (current version is 10.02). Is there any way how to fix this? Or how to downgrade to minor version.
Another thing as well. By default i have GNOME version. Just installed the KDE full package from synpatic. when i try to log in with kde manager same like the flash, it logs me out to welcome screen.

I've found somewhere on the forum I need to check whether "wave" in alsamixer is not muted. There is another posibility: change source in audacity to "wave". There is no option like this in my program and I don't know where can I find that "wave" in alsamixer. I don't use any like artsd, jack... Just alsa + fluxbox + audacity.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMost of my gnome system administration tools are (suddenly) failing to open. The system is a new installation with both KDE and gnome, and the gnome system admin tools were working fine, but now they fail silently (nothing even in .xsession-errors). For instance, if I select Synaptic Package manager from the menu, I will get the gksu prompt to enter my administrative password, which I do. Then a notification will appear in the Taskbar "Granting Rights" and then after that nothing happens, it just fails silently. Note that this also happens if I enter 'gksu synaptic' or 'gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic' at the alt-F2 command line. Note that it doesn't seem to matter whether I check "Save Password for Session" or not. The same happens for time-admin, users-admin, etc. I have tried reinstalling gnome-system-tools, system-tools-backends, and gnome-keyring with no effect. I have googled extensively and have found a few other people with this same problem, but no solutions. Note also that kdesu does still work fine, and there doesn't seem to be any such problems in KDE in general. Only in gnome and with gksu.
P.S. Let me know if you need any more info (output from commands, files, etc).
Does anyone know where I could find a block diagram of the Squeeze sound system with all the possible permutations thereof. I am primarily interested in OSS4 on a KDE4 desk top. I want something that shows all possible inputs, all possible outputs and all of the component programs in between. At this point I am really confused by all of the possible packages and how they interact with each other.
My present OSS4 installation works with oss4test, VLC, etc. but doesn't work with iceweasel. I have installed all of the recommended packages to no avail. I have an Intel DP55KG mother board with the Intel HD sound system on board.
I've got a problem on my Debian, I've tried installing all the correct alsa packages and all packages that have the word sound or audio description. The problem that is happening here is that when I go into settings and click on sound in Gnome, it appears to have a dummy output and in fact, a few weeks ago, the sound was working properly. Now, I believe, that after an update, the sound card was not recognized. Used the lspci command in root mode, and showed my sound card which is onboard. I'll leave the model below it, because I've tried everything and could not solve anything.

went through the tutorial on FedoraSolved for securing ssh. I installed denyhosts with yum and then tried to run it with the command line command"sudo /etc/init.d/denyhosts start" but I got the message"Job Failed. See system logs and 'systemctl status' for details [FAILED]"and in the application "services" in the applications menu,t shows an exclamation warning and says that "This unit has failed"

However, upon logging in, the piano roll was crackly and distorted; similar, if not identical to this [URL] .... problem. However, disabling HDMI output in PulseAudio Volume Control, as recommended in the "solution" in the above link did not fix the issue, and we do not think the other solution of updating the kernel is likely to be a solution, since audio is fine in GNOME. Because of this, it seems likely that the problem is with Phonon, KDE's sound layer.
Here is some of the info about the system:
- Dual-boot Debian 7.7/Windows Vista 64-bit
- AMD sound hardware
- Only analog stereo is used; HDMI is not
- AMD CPU and (integrated) GPU
This seems to be a problem about half the time. Also, sound tends to play better when being played the second time in a row, and adjusting the volume even slightly seems to have an immediate effect on improving the sound quality.
Two days ago I upgraded kde to 4.6 as provided by the qt-kde.debian.net team, in the process pulling in a few updates from sid (in particular, the 2.6.38 kernel), and after could get no sound out of my laptop. Could someone help work out why?
I was using pulseaudio. This seemed no longer able to find my sound-card (hda-intel, details below). The HDMI output was still listed (but I don't have a TV to use it with). Some error messages from syslog code....
I recently changed from Gentoo to Debian Squeeze. All went fine but I have an ALSA issue. I have an AMD Athlon II X4 board with a Nvidia (Realtek) sound chip. After installing I got a lot of "no such device" errors, so I installed the Realtek driver the Debian way and the errors vanished. I could successful run alsactl init and alsamixer.
At this point there is no sound neither in games nor system. alsaplay says (on the screen) that it is playing a wav file but there is no sound. My test ''dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/dsp'' complains "/dev/dsp : no such file or directory". Well, all clear. modprobing the snd-*-oss modules brings sound alive but I have to do this after every restart. I have no clue how to make this persistent the Debian way.
I recently updated my Debian jessie system (for the first time in a few months). It broke my video driver (fortunately a dpkg-reconfigure fixed that) and my wireless driver (forget how I fixed that...), and my sound. ALSA still thinks I have an output device, I've set volumes all the way up in alsamixer.
In vlc and firefox, I can't hear anything using the default audio out (which I think is pulseaudio), nor can I hear anything if I ask them to use ALSA output directly. I've tried rebooting, killing/manually starting pulseaudio, etc to no avail.
I think it was either the kernel upgrade (went from 3.10 to 3.13) or a configuration option in some sound subsystem that broke. To be clear, sound was working perfectly before the upgrade. My machine is an Ivy Bridge-era Zenbook.
It has happened to my debian jessie system that the sound sometimes ceased to work, but after a quick review of alsamixer, pavucontrol it was easy to put everything back to normal. Not this time
The sound works as a charm with no headphones, but not with them, and I find them particularly useful for talking with people since the sound quality is way better...

i recently installed ubuntu 10.4 lucid, and i have no sound. also, the sound preferences will not open so i cannot see if anything is muted. there is a sound preferences icon in the pannle, which has a slider that is doing nothing. videos will not work, and there is no splash sound when i start up my computer.
i am also 15 and new at computers, so a simple, or step by step answer or test would be appreciated.
1) the volume preferences is back, i was logged in as root, and now as my account, and preferences are here, but still no sound. it was also not on mute.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu 9.10 X64, and am using ALSA for my sound. I have no trouble with sound: VLC, Adobe's Flash plugin, Java, etc. all work properly. When I run the Gnash standalone player, sound does not work at all.
When I run Gnash in a terminal, I get this:

Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.
