Fedora X86/64bit :: User That Can Only Make The Sound Card Work On A F10 X86_64 System Is Root

May 4, 2009

The only user that can make the sound card work on a F10 x86_64 system is root. For non root users, I am not seeing any error messages when a app tries to use/access the sound card, just nothing plays. As I said, for root everything works as expected. I am sure this is a permission/setup issue, but I have no idea where to start.

I have motherboard Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P with nvidia hda sound card and I have no sound output using line in input. I've already tried to compile actual realtek linux driver but it didn't help. It looks ok because using gnome-volume-control I can see that there is music - volume bar is moving - and I can record it but I can't hear that on speaker live. I have also only 2 channel output hardware configuration. Alsa mixer have all channels but changing volume adjust didn't help. some information:

Fedora Installation :: Make Root Partition For 12 X86_64

May 14, 2010

Recently I tried to install Fedora 12 x86_64 to my laptop. I ran the live fedora image from my cooldisk and then pressed "Install to Hard Drive" from live desktop. Then I went forward until I reached the partitioning section. Though I had ~28GB free space in my Harddrive, but it says: "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks." You can see my steps until reaching this problem in these 3

pics:
step1:
step2:
step3:

I captured these steps by using Fedora 12 Live printscreen tool. I tried to install Fedora12 from its non-bootable DVD too, but no difference! So there's only 2 situations:

1. I did something wrong -> install Fedora and use its partitioning tool.
2. There's a bug in Fedora -> confirm that this is a bug and say me an alternative way to install fedora.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Sound Does Not Work In 14

Feb 22, 2011

I've had this same problem in Ubuntu 10.10 and earlier and have never found a solution. I forgot how to change pulse audio and look at the MXSA because that was awhile ago and I haven't messed with Linux since. What have I done to try to fix this? I turned the sound up lol. It was on mute after install.

One thing I would like to mention that I have never asked about before is, I do not have a sound card, I used on-board audio from my motherboard. Could this be a problem?

Fedora X86/64bit :: /dev/mem Not Created On 12 X86_64?

I created an EC2 instance with Fedora 12 x86_64 about a month ago. I have been getting an hourly system log error:mcelog: Cannot open /dev/mem for DMI decoding: No such file or directoryI was ignoring it because I did not notice any implications, until now.I am running MongoDB on this machine, and reads from /dev/urandom are failing. I know reading from /dev/urandom shouldn't fail, so I think this system error may be the underlying problem.Are these two issues connected?If so, is there a way to fix this without having to completely reinstall the OS?

Fedora X86/64bit :: F14 X86_64 Does Not Recognize 4GB Ram?

Feb 3, 2011

I am a total Noob, I couln't find the answer to my question anywhere. I need to run Matlab with 4GB of RAM and I have been told Fedora 64bits is the best environement for that. I downloaded the iso for the Fedora 14 x86_64. I first booted using the live CD and was surprised to see that only 3.4GB are recognized. The computer is a HP with dual core 64bits intel cpus and the motherboard is supposed to handle until 8GB of RAM, I have currently 2 x 2GB installed.

I thought it might have been a problem from the live CD and I proceeded to install, but still same problem, only 3.4GB recognized. Most threads I have found mention the PAE kernel but from what I understand this only applies to 32bits Fedoras ?

Fedora :: Ssh Public Key Login Doesn't Work As Root User

Dec 22, 2010

I've tried to ssh in as the root user w/o a password (RSA keys) but I've had no luck as the root user. I've tried the exact same commands with Debian 5 and Centos 5.5, without a problem. Fedora 13 and 14 won't work! I can only log in w/o a password as a normal user, never as the root user! It always asks for the password if I try as root. I've even tried copying Debian's and Centos's sshd_config file and restarting sshd, but it still won't work.

Code:

mkdir ~/.ssh ~username/.ssh
chmod 0700 ~/.ssh ~username/.ssh

Fedora X86/64bit :: 12 X86_64 Hangs On Startup?

Jan 17, 2010

I have just installed Fedora 12 on my old AMD64 desktop. The install went fine, I then set about adding various useful things like skype, flash plugin- some manually, some with autoten.

Upon rebooting, the system hangs. Looking at the text startup, the last line before it hangs is:

Starting jexec servicesStarting yum-updatesd: [OK]

After this line appears, the display flashes repeatedly then does nothing. It sits there with the text showing (or on graphical startup, the splash screen disappears) and a cursor flashing.

I think the problem may be with the nvidia driver I installed with autoten, which I suspect is wrong for my system (think my graphics card is too old).

Does anyone know how I might remove the driver given I can't get as far as logging in at the moment? Or am I wrong and the problem likely to be something else?

Fedora :: F12 - Getting Sound To Work As A Normal User - A Simple Fix?

Feb 18, 2010

If sound on F12 works as root user but not as a normal user, try this simple fix! I've been struggling to get sound working as a normal (non-root) user since F10. Until now I've had to run X as root user to get any sound out of my machine.

Sound actually works OK now for me as a normal user. Here's how I fixed the problem.

First I uninstalled pulseaudio with:# yum remove pulseaudio Then reboot back to the hardware. You might want to keep pulseaudio, but I have no need for it. PA wasn't running on my system anyway.

Running X as root user, I did the following: As a test I opened a root shell and typed the following:

[root]# alsamixer c0 That started the alsamixer OK, and all the controls were accessible.

Fedora Hardware :: SPDIF Output Does Not Work On Sound Card

Dec 27, 2009

I have just bought a new PC with an ASUS M4A78-AM motherboard with integrated VT1708S 6-channel sound chip in it, so I freshly installed fedora 12 without any issues However, I can't get the surround sound working. I have searched many forums a lot, and haven't found any solution yet.It seems that even the SPDIF output does not work on this sound card, and that is what people talk about on almost every forum / mail list. So I was unable to find almost ANY information regarding ANALOG surround sound.

The motherboard has 3 jacks on it - green for FRONT / 2 speaker set; blue is the line in OR THE REAR-SPEAKER out, and pink is the microphone OR side speaker out in the 6-spk configuration.My speaker configuration is 4.1 [2 front, 2 back and subwoofer]. Line out does not produce any sound.I have uninstalled pulseaudio [sudo yum remove pulseaudio]Now alsamixer shows a lot of controls, but even if I unmute line out and set it to max, it is still not producing any sound.

However, to my surprise no updates were found! The install DVD was downloaded and burnt to DVD about two weeks ago. Did the installer fetch and install the F10 updates? Or did I mess up my install and/or configuration of F10? I remember when I installed F9 there were a lot of updates found right after the install.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Install F11 X86_64 Without Success On New Machine?

Jul 15, 2009

For the last couple of days I've been trying to install Fedora 11 x86_64 without success on my new machine, specs below. Intel Core i7-920 2.66Ghz MSI X58 Pro 7200 SATA Drive (can't remember the make) 6GB RAM So first off I tried install the 32bit live cd and that worked without any problems and installed fine. Only problem is I need access to the full 6GB of RAM so I really need to switch to the 64bit version.

I downloaded the full x86_64 install DVD and burnt it off. Rebooted and began the installation. It was going fine until it started installing the packages. The install seemed to freeze, although the mouse would still move. I left this for 10 minutes just incase it kick started again, but there was no HD activity or DVD activity so I gave up and rebooted to try again. The next time I started the install I had problems with it freezing while partitioning. I was beginning to think something was up with my hard drive or the drivers for the hard drives controller weren't working correctly (could still be the case).

After about 20 attempts with it freezing at various points I gave up and decided to try the x86_64 live cd. This booted with no problems so I started the install from the desktop. First thing I noticed was a kernel error pop up after I started the drive partitioning. Something about dereferencing a pointer in the kernel (0x20) (sorry no additional info at the moment, if needed please ask). This got me thinking the kernels not playing nice with my setup. However, it let me continue and copied the live image onto the hard drive. Then it started going through the post installation steps and this is where I got another kernel error (again I can get this if needed) and the window froze and all activity seemed to stop again. Has anyone got any ideas what could be causing these problems. I've also tried a CentOS 5.2 x86_64 version I had lying around and this had similar problems (although this does use anaconda as the installer too).
