I have an old RHEL3 machine that we didn't update before it went end of whatever redhat calls it, and now when I run an up2date -l, it says "This system may not be updated until it is associated with a channel." Is there any way to give it a channel so I can get whatever updates we missed before they turned it off?

General :: System Sound Not Working On New User Account

Jan 10, 2010

I am running Debian Lenny with the default Gnome desktop. When I set up a new user the sound is not available. It says the device in not installed. I have used the Gnome system menu as follows.System, Administration, Users and Groups, then used the add user button and entered the appropriate info. I then went and clicked on the properties button and then the User Privileges section and checked off the "use audio devices" button. Still no sound. When I go to System, Preferences, Sound, Devices, and do the sound tests I get report that device is not installed.

When I am logged in to the user (jon) that I set up when doing the D.Lenny install, the sound on all various media play back works fine. There is one with 1 exception when loged in to this user(jon). I can not get any sound from the system sounds like select check box = toggle .wav, chose menu item = beep, etc. It would be realy nice to know how to repair or configure tis issue as well.under system info, pci devices it lists as follows Multimedia audio controller, Intel Corp 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW. Mother board is a ECS 915P-A2 and I guess about 2007 or so vintage. 1 G mem installed and a P-4 2.66 chip. It has the sound built in to it. It works fine on WinXP.

Hardware :: Dual Boot System - Audigy Sound Not Working

Mar 8, 2010

I managed to create a dual boot on separate drives Win7 and Linux UE 64bit and loading which ever OS I want to use with GRUB. Now everything is working dandy sofar in Linux except it seems that in sound properties, it's picking up my onboard sound & audigy4 card the latter being the one want to use. Could this be the reason why my audigy sound is not working. I have not plugged my speakers into the onboard sound to see if they work. So it seems as if linux is picking up both sound devices but not using either. Also linux sees my audigy 4 as a audigy2 card. I will tonight after work disable the onboard card in the bios to see if it works but if not, am I missing something here?

Debian Hardware :: Sound Stopped Working After Upgrading Jessie System

May 1, 2014

I recently updated my Debian jessie system (for the first time in a few months). It broke my video driver (fortunately a dpkg-reconfigure fixed that) and my wireless driver (forget how I fixed that...), and my sound. ALSA still thinks I have an output device, I've set volumes all the way up in alsamixer.

In vlc and firefox, I can't hear anything using the default audio out (which I think is pulseaudio), nor can I hear anything if I ask them to use ALSA output directly. I've tried rebooting, killing/manually starting pulseaudio, etc to no avail.

I think it was either the kernel upgrade (went from 3.10 to 3.13) or a configuration option in some sound subsystem that broke. To be clear, sound was working perfectly before the upgrade. My machine is an Ivy Bridge-era Zenbook.

Server :: After Reboot Tomcat 5 Will Not Start On RHEL3

Mar 20, 2011

We have three production websites running on RHEL 3 AS running tomcat 5. After a reboot last night Tomcat will not start and has the following in the catalina.out log:

Mar 20, 2011 4:09:31 PM org.apache.commons.digester.Digester startElement
SEVERE: Begin event threw error
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/naming/resources/ProxyDirContext
at java.lang.Class.getDeclaredConstructors0(Native Method)
at java.lang.Class.privateGetDeclaredConstructors(Class.java:2389)
at java.lang.Class.getConstructor0(Class.java:2699)
at java.lang.Class.newInstance0(Class.java:326)
at java.lang.Class.newInstance(Class.java:308) .....

I have spoken with our Java Developers and they seem to think it is something up between httpd and tomcat at an OS level. Since Tomcat is not starting and giving an error that it is all ready running, I think you have a stale lock file. Look for the file /var/run/tomcat5.pid and cat or less it to see what the PID number is. If it matches the error, then delete the file and try to start Tomcat again. It should start this time.

Most common problem with Tomcat5. Try following :
1) Search PID in /tmp, if found delete it or else stop your tomcat.
2) Undeploy your application
3) Check out this link [URL] to know what causing tomcat to generate this error.

If none of them work then check your application configuration settings. [URL]. When I do start tomcat it appears to start:

[root@RPSI-2 san00]# service tomcat5 start
Starting tomcat5: Using CATALINA_BASE: /usr/share/tomcat5
Using CATALINA_HOME: /usr/share/tomcat5
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /usr/share/tomcat5/temp
Using JAVA_HOME: /usr/java/jdk1.6.0
[root@RPSI-2 san00]#

But then I try to find if it is running via ps -ef | grep tomcat5, I only receive my query. I perform the same query on Java and it also only returns my query.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Stops Working After 1-5 Mins Of Playing Sound?

Dec 14, 2010

Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Sound Stopped Working, IEC958 Light Turns On Instead Of Sound Playing?

Jan 30, 2011

The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.

General :: Restart System Via SSH Access When Shutdown Not Working

Jul 22, 2011

After NFS mounting some system folders (i.e. lib, usr) of a slave cluster node to /lib & /usr located on the master cluster server I got into some problems: I forgot Ubuntu 10.04 was installed on this particular slave node, while the master node runs 9.10. Now, I am not able to unmount these folders using umount, or restart the system using shutdown, I get some error: " /lib/libblkid.so.1: version `BLKID_2.17' not found". Is there an alternative way to unmount these NFS shares, or to restart the system to undo the mounts? The systems are located elsewhere, so just physically restarting the system would not be the preferred option.

What can I do to test the network connection from Ubuntu? It's not even getting an IP.

I suppose it could be something has died in the hardware, but want to eliminate other possibilities first.
