Brand new clean install of F12. On boot the network starts and grabs an IP from my DHCP server and will return pings, however, as soon as the logon window starts "all" network activety is stopped.
I have tried deactivating the NIC, then enabling again, (doesn't get an ip at this point), turning off the firewall, managing the network with & without network manager enabled, selinux off...all makes no difference.
I updated Fedora 9 yesterday. I rebooted earlier and now the desktop starts for a very short time then disappears followed by a window opening and closing for a few goes. After this nothing! YUM does not work, neither does Firefox! A bug report informed me there was a Python problem but I can find no reference to this anywhere.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Ubuntu box (10.10 x64) that i use for XBMC (a media center), everything works fine when i boot up and start adding network shares (the shares are on a Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Server). it doesn't matter if i use NFS or SAMBA to mount the shares, both work. BUT when i reboot i get problems The share mounts come up but to late, XBMC doesn't see the share when it starts.
The thing i see is : When i boot up the lights of my NIC (realtek 8111) are on and flickering, but just a few seconds before the login prompt comes up the lights are off. And then after 15 to 20 seconds everything comes up again, and the shares are mounted, but to late for XBMC (my mediacenter software) i've installed new drivers for my network card (removed r8169 and installed r8168 ) but the problem is still there.
I just did a clean install and ran system-config-network from command line to fix my IP settings. Everything works but when I reboot, my NIC is gone from #ifconfig -a
I have to login to the GUI and go to System --> Administration --> Network --> "Click on my NIC" --> check the box that says "Activate device when computer starts"
Once this box is checked, everything works fine. - I have turned off NetworkManager and just use the network service to manage my ip settings.
I was wondering if this "Activate device when computer starts" can be done through the command line without having to access the GUI?
I love Ubuntu but since upgrading to 10.04 have 2 probs. The first, which I have posted in another thread, is the splash screen. The second is this: with compiz, startup occurs in this order:
1. Gnome do dock and pointer appear on black background with no panels or desktop
2. Some hard drive activity
3. 10 secs no hard drive activity still no desktop
4. Gnome Desktop and panels finally appear with wireless already connected
It seems to me that the Gnome/compiz desktop is loaded only after everything else, including wireless and all services/processes. Compiz works fine, I am not short of ram or resources (2 Gb + Core 2 duo@2.7ghz). My question is then, is there a way to change the order of startup so that the desktop/compiz appears more quickly?
but I would like to download to my W'7 desktop. I click on the download button [URL]and it says download started, but I am never prompted with the window to choose the directory to go to and then start the download.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection.It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

If I set asterisk -rx reload in a script and run update-rc.d I can see the script run as everything boots but my trunks don't load. If I run the command after the gui loads the trunks reload and go online.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a linux kernel from linux.org to check what is the kernel is about, i clicked on make_file or make sth .. and in the same session i downloaded a program called login window.
Now the problem is that the system boots ok, it gives me a msg saying that system is running in low graphics mode, when i press ok i get a few options like troubleshootin or restart x or use back up configuration .. and nothing works .. when i press start normally it never stops loading .. i can see the terminal when clicking ctrl + alt + f1,f2 ... but when i press ctrl + alt + f7 or return back to the desktop ubuntu is still loading .. it never stops loading.
And after using ubuntu for a while i really hate windows 7 .. i have it on the system, so is there a way to fix this problem?
I'm building a HTPC using the minimal ubuntu variant.I've come pretty far, having X11 with Graphic support and Boxee running.The system boots extremely fast (no tweaking everything is default). So fast boxee is up and running before there is networking. The fast boot time is great. But I'd rather have a network connection before boxee is started.I could write a bash script that checks if there is a connection and then launch boxee accordingly.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed qemu/kvm and created a Bridged network connection which works just fine(Windows 7 VM won't work in NAT mode.)
But when I try to use NetworkManager it says that I have no network connection because the network isn't managed, (I set the settings in ifcfg-br0 and ifcfg-eth0 to be managed)
The real problem is that now I can't use my VPN connections (I have many) in NetworkManager.
Is there a way to have both of these pieces of functionality?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just got Ubuntu and I feel like there is going to be a really simple solution but right now I cannot find any information on a solution. I run 9.10 desktop i386 or w/e and I have a wireless connection. The network does not show up when I go the network manager to select a network. No networks show up and all it lets me do is create a new network connection which I have no idea how to do. I think it might have to do with my device recognition, but the network is fine it is just Ubuntu.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've restarted a server a couple times, and during the boot process pings respond when it brings up eth0, but then when i get to the command line login screen, the pings die. once i log in and do a ./network start the pings respond again, so i'm guessing its dying or not set to start automatically maybe? What should I check?

It is funny because, I have other network mounts which share the same server, and there icons are appearing, and this particular share just does not show up with the icon, even if I try mounting it different locations in the filesystem. Any ideas. I really like those cute icons on my desktop.

I've already change my fstab file to add a network drive to be mount on startup localize in /mnt/freebox/. This is also working great. The issue is during the startup, utorrent starts before fstab and thus the network drive is unmount.
In my utorrent init.d daemon script, I ask for $Network starts in first time: Code: Required-Start: $network Is there any possibilities to order the startup and ask to fstab to start before uTorrent Daemon?
I am using centos 5.5 x85_64 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 The server is hanging at start up due to the follwoing error
udevd[746] nss_ldap reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 4 seconds)
udevd[746] failed to bind to LDAP ser er ldap://192.168.0.100 cant contact ldap
It fails and then tries again, and again, each time increasing the sleep time. This is happening before network sercvices are started so ther is no way it can connect to ldap. anyone know a way to fix this problem?
Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.
I have just rewired my LAN using Cat 6 cables. Download- and Upload speeds to my main machine are great :However, it seems my LAN speed is very slow. when I copy large files from my main desktop pc to my mediaplayer, I only reach a speed of 3,7 MB/s in Ubuntu 10.10 using SMB protocol to connect to mediaplayer. I use a Sitecom WL351 Router that works fine as far as I can see. Using my dualboot Windows 7 I can copy the same large files using same setup (same pc to same mediaplayer) I can copy with almost 10 MB/s. I appreciate a little protocol overhead in Ubuntu, but this seems to be a little too much

I found a Linux utility (OpenConnect) which will do the same thing, but allow me more flexibility with my networking needs.What I ultimately would like to have is to have a switch that I can connect any network device into it and be connected to the office. IE (my IP Work Phone and Computer) Currently I have is a computer with fedora 13 and two network cards eth0 (home network - connected to a router) and eth1 which I would like to connect a switch to. OpenConnect communicates fine and I can see the work network from the Fedora machine. It creates a vpn0 tun/tap device and I don't know how to pass communication to/from the eth1 device.
Do I try to iptables the ports for the phone and services I need on the computer? Or do I build bridge; and If I do what am I bridging. I have tried making a bridge from eth1 to vpn0 which reply's with unsupported device or something like that.Unfortunately my network skills are bit limited and my office says "it can't be done". Their solution is for me to buy a ASA5505 (or something device) and have a static IP. I would have to make it work as my router and even then it will only DHCP 10 ip addresses; which will cause a shortage of IP addresses in the house.
if i stop that session, and come back later, it will have me log on at the login screen, but start a new session, with multiple instances of things..now, with vino, i could just keep the same session running, and when i VNC in, it just resumes it.. This one starts a new one.. i even tried just locking the screen, and it still starts a new one...i know there is an easy fix.. lol.. i just cannot find one.. i REALLY like how it shows me the ubuntu login on my server.. that is slick, so id like to keep that, if possible.

There is nothing added to my Knetworkmanager, I'm a beginner I should use a pcf file for my vpn connection. I use it properly, I'm sure because the connection starts and an icon is added to my panel and remains until I disconnect.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed F12, updated to today. I've set it to boot to runlevel 3. That works. If I run startx, X starts - I see the mouse cursor and the blue/green background. But no panels. No desktop icons.
I tried switchdesk kde, then startx. Same thing. Except kde is running because if I right-click on the desktop, I get a kde dialog that allows me to start an app.
Tried switchdesk gnome. Same thing. Rebooted, same thing.
Total Newb here, sorry. I am pseudo-IT at work and have set up a desktop with Debian 5 (accidentally overwrote Windows in the process, but there you go). We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. If I download the Linux driver, what do I do next?
