I've installed F12, updated to today. I've set it to boot to runlevel 3. That works. If I run startx, X starts - I see the mouse cursor and the blue/green background. But no panels. No desktop icons.
I tried switchdesk kde, then startx. Same thing. Except kde is running because if I right-click on the desktop, I get a kde dialog that allows me to start an app.
Tried switchdesk gnome. Same thing. Rebooted, same thing.
Where can I put a script so that it'll be run whenever gnome starts but not kde? I tried creating a file called .gnomerc in my home directory but that didn't work. I'd prefer to be able to do it without the "Startup Application" interface.
Whenever I play streaming videos, (mpg, wmv, etc), the volume will move from where it's set to maximum level. Then I have to adjust the sound. If I play another streaming video it will do it again. I'm using F11 with Gnome. How to stop it from happening? No matter how I adjust player's volume, it starts off at maximum level. This is my sound info I'm using: Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP73 High Definition Audio (rev a1)
I upgraded Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 via preupgrade. And now system succesfully boot, but Gnome doesn't starts (i think). There is only black screen and I can only write there.
I'm running CentOS 5.4 on i386 machine with 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5Whenever I login into Gnome, a gnome-termial window comes up. Instantly title says root@localhost before settling with user@localhost with current directory as ~/Downloads. Only happens with my particular user account (normal user), not with root as I tried. I also have KDE, Xfce, Fluxbox as other option at login, but terminal only shows up when I log into Gnome (not kde, xfce or fluxbox)I've done and
1. cronetab -e Nothing there. 2. Don't have ~/.xinitrc ~/.session 3. Nothing in ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile 4. Nothing in /etc/rc.local
For about a week or two when I try to open a folder from the menu "Places" of Gnome 2.32.0 (with Fedora 14 OS) the program Rythmbox starts instead. This happens even when I try to access a connected harddrive which requires entry of a code. After entering the code again Rythmbox opens! This doesn't happen only with "Computer", "Network" and "Connect to Server" of "Places". I can't think of anything that I did (apart from using Rythmbox quite often recently) that could have caused this, so I assume that it is a bug of Gnome. Have other people encountered this problem? (I assume that it is not Fedora specific, but rather a general problem of Gnome) If so,
I love Ubuntu but since upgrading to 10.04 have 2 probs. The first, which I have posted in another thread, is the splash screen. The second is this: with compiz, startup occurs in this order:
1. Gnome do dock and pointer appear on black background with no panels or desktop 2. Some hard drive activity 3. 10 secs no hard drive activity still no desktop 4. Gnome Desktop and panels finally appear with wireless already connected
It seems to me that the Gnome/compiz desktop is loaded only after everything else, including wireless and all services/processes. Compiz works fine, I am not short of ram or resources (2 Gb + Core 2 duo@2.7ghz). My question is then, is there a way to change the order of startup so that the desktop/compiz appears more quickly?
I have just started up Kubuntu, and it shows the Ubuntu desktop instead of Plasma. Before this, the only change I did was remove my Broadcom WiFi card because Kubuntu sometimes couldn't boot because of some error mentioning the bcm driver and phy5.
I removed the card, and no errors on boot. Now, I can't get on the internet because Kubuntu can't connect to anything. I see all of the networks, but I guess GNOME is interfering with Network Manager...
since the last SuSE online update (last Wednesday?) the X server no longer starts on our notebook (ATI HD 4200) so we only have the consoles available, which limits the WAF heavily . We were using SuSE 11.3 with the Gnome desktop for about one months and it worked smoothly, but since the update (which included a kernel update to 2.6.34.7-0.7) the X server tries to start 5 times and then gives up. All logfiles end with:
Code: ... [ 13.899] Segmentation fault at address 0x3c [ 13.899] Fatal server error:
[Code]....
I used the ati driver ati-fglrxG02-kmp-desktop, version 8.762_k2.6.34.0_12-31.1 from the ATI Suse repository. To solve the problem I already switched to the Xorg driver which lead to a color distorted display but no segmentation fault. But I'd like to get the ati driver running again.
How do I run a script after gnome desktop starts? I want to run asterisk -rx reload as a command or a script AFTER gnome desktop (gui) loads, not during the boot process. For some reason my trunks are not loading in asterisk. If I set asterisk -rx reload in a script and run update-rc.d I can see the script run as everything boots but my trunks don't load. If I run the command after the gui loads the trunks reload and go online.
I did a clean install of 10.10 on my Asus A6R laptop today. Previously i had 10.04 on it.
After installation and the first reboot my GNOME won't start in normal session. If I select Ubuntu Desktop Edition (safe mode) everything works fine, but on the normal Ubuntu Desktop Edition session, GNOME just won't start. I have a mouse cursor that i can move around and a normal background. Also i can hear the usual startup sound.
I'm not even sure where to start trouble shooting this. All I can tell you is that ksoftirqd starts using 100% cpu. It either happens immediately after a resume (about a 50 % chance), or at some random interval (anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours after a fresh boot).
Tried to install F14 x64 last night, and selected "install or upgrade" from the splash screen. It ran a bunch of text past me a lot faster than I could read it, and the last line (where it ceased all function) said
Code:[ 2.040098] Registered taskstats version 1. I happened to have a 32 bit dvd of the same o/s, and it provides the same error. Anyone know of any parameters that can be entered, perhaps to skip a certain type of test, or whatever it is doing here?
Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.
I use Fedora 11 and xfce from official repo. Xfce started to behave unstable two weeks ago. Unstable I mean, when I log in icons on desktop blinks few times, applets don't appear and the result of ps -A command is:
Code:
I've have found the same error with workaround on Ubuntu bug tracker: [url]
Brand new clean install of F12. On boot the network starts and grabs an IP from my DHCP server and will return pings, however, as soon as the logon window starts "all" network activety is stopped.
I have tried deactivating the NIC, then enabling again, (doesn't get an ip at this point), turning off the firewall, managing the network with & without network manager enabled, selinux off...all makes no difference.
My adsl device currently used as Auto eth0 only works when i plug in to the computer. The device doesn't starts automatically as it does in Windows. How can solve this ? Each time I try to connect internet after restarting , I should manually plug the cable to the port.
Finally solved a problem of wireless not working on my laptop. Now I have a problem where Firefox (3.6.4) starts up in off-line mode on each instance. I have to go to files menu and uncheck the work offline button before trying to go to any site. When I close firefox and later open it again, the work offline button is still checked.
Why is the unchecking of work offline saved between instances? Other settings and preferences are saved correctly. I don't have this problem in openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 (same version of FF).

I have two laptops here, a Lenovo T510 and a Lenovo Ideapdad S12, both running Fedora 13 with KDE4. On the T510 wireless worked out of the box and is enabled when I boot it, on the S12 it's not. I have the wl driver installed but every time I boot the laptop wireless is disabled in knetworkmanager. I have to manually enabled it, then wait a few seconds until it establishes a connection to my already configured wireless networks.
I have Windows Vista in a primary partition & Fedora 14 in a logical partition.
Recently, I increased the size of the extended partition and created another logical partition inside it. I formatted the new logical partition from Vista.
After reboot, instead of the list of operating systems, I started getting "grub>"
I searched on the internet and modified entries in /boot/grub/grub.conf, from (hd0,4).. to (hd0,5)..
I still get the grub prompt, but if I enter " configfile (hd0,5)/boot/grub/menu.lst " it shows the os list & I can use Fedora.
How can I configure the system so that it shows the list of os instead of "grub>" ?
I'm building a lab of fedora 14 machines that are supported by an RHEL/CentOS 5.6 server. Everything was working fine yesterday, but today ypbind can't connect to the server and nfs mounts fail with this message:
mount.nfs: mount(2): Operation not permitted mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'addr=10.9.1.6' mount.nfs: prog 100003, trying vers=3, prot=6 mount.nfs: portmap query failed: RPC: Remote system error - No route to host
I can ping the server from the client using FQDN and ip address.
I want to run 1 instance of x11vnc at boot after gdm starts, itsa remote vnc server that will work without me first loggin in
Im just not sure where or how to start it when computer boots? i can run it on another tty and connect so its all setup but not sure what the "right" was is.
One of the screens in the installer( middle of screen) will show what systems are on the grub menu, and one will be marked the default.
If the vista is not there (usually indicated by other), then click the add and select the correct boot partition (sda for vista) and change it's label to Windows Vista.
If other is there, click the edit button and change other to Windows Vista.
Finally, click the check box for the one you want to be the default boot. (you can always change that in the grub.conf later.)
The application is Conky running under Fedora 12 Alpha. This application is set to start upon logging in to the desktop and it does just that. It appears for a second or two and then disappears from view. Although I don't see it, top tells me it is in fact running. As a result of this unexpected behavior I kill the process and restart the application using the ALT/F2 run application tool. When I do this Conky appears on the desktop and stays in view.
Ran preupgrade for F11 to F12. Everything ok there it seemed. Upon reboot, it started booting the kernel, then the video disappeared, no signal to monitor. After about 15min, I just rebooted and managed to get make to Fedora 11.
Considering just going with DVD upgrade. I googled preupgrade no video and here as well, and several unrelated things seemed to come up.
Edit: video nvidia 8400gs proc AMD 4000+ mobo VIA chipset
I'm attempting to install F12 64 bit. I currently have F10 running on this system. I'd like to do a clean install. I'm using the DVD. I boot the computer with the DVD in. I choose the first option (Install or upgrade). It starts the boot process and then it hangs. [URL]
After asking at #Fedora I was given the advice to boot with `intel_iommu=off`. That gets me slightly further in the process. It gets to the point where anaconda is starting. Then all heck breaks loose. It appears the monitor loses the signal from the computer (power light turns red just like if the computer was off). The caps lock and the scroll lock lights on the keyboard blink about once a second. The DVD drive continues to spin for about a minute and then stops. Since I have no display, I have no idea what's going on.
