Ubuntu :: Classic With No Effects Even After Fresh Restart
Jul 25, 2011I tried to enable the desktop cube but it had some issues with unity and I told CCSM to resolve all the issues and now none of my unity stuff works. No side bar, no top bar, nothing. When I boot into Ubuntu all I get is my back ground. I can switch between screens, and log out using key bindings, but I can't do anything else. I can only get into Ubuntu classic with no effects if I do a fresh restart. How do I get CCSM to cooperate again? I've disabled everything, re-enabled everything, using all three options, restarted.

Nov 20, 2010So i installed ubuntu 10.04 on my Hp dv9000 and all went well, then a few days after it asked if i wanted to update to 10.10 so i did and this is where things went kookie.
After i installed i noticed my wifi was all screwy. It would connect but kick me off after several mins of use. I installed WICD hoping that would fix the problem but it didnt. internet work for a few min and then just suddenly cuts out and i have to restart to reconnect because it shows no networks in the manager?

Aug 31, 2009I have been working on this for a few hours now and still haven't been able to track down whats going on. I just switched servers and put a fresh debian install on with apache2 + custom suexec + php5(fcgi). now when i upload a file to the site it wont upload, so i tracked down the issue. its the /tmp directory that root tmp. its at 100% so i restart the /etc/init.d/apache2 process and the /tmp directory is automagically cleared to 20% used and i can upload again. so i figure ok its got to be a setting. i looked in all the conf files conf.d the php5 conf files and no where do i have a /tmp directory set. so i think OK I can build a cron to clear the tmp directory every 10 mins till i find the issue, but alas, when i go into the tmp directory There are NO files to delete!!! wtf. holy crap. and all that goodness, this is crazy, how can you have a tmp directory that is not being written to, from all i can see, so i think ok it might be a hard link, i checked, in all root and sub root directories no hard links to tmp, no soft links to temp either. and if i sit in my /tmp directory and do a df -h after some uploads its going from 20% so 23% and up, but i do ls -alh and nothing, then ls -al and watch bytes, nothing , so this is very strange. has anyone encountered something like this? is it possible that this is a hard link thats hidden somewhere or some other extreme function i have never heard of?

Jul 8, 2011I have compiz installed, and ccsm. Currently the only window manager I can get to work is metacity.
KDE works fine with compiz.
If I even enable "desktop cube" in ccsm, my window manager dies and the proper one does not start up. Running Code:

Unity seems to work fine as far as this is concerned, but I hate unity. It isn't even remotely ready to use in my opinion.
I see alot of other people posting about this with no solid answers.
I moved all the following out of the way from my old 10.10 $HOME, so this should essentially be a clean home dir. as far as compiz and GNOME are concerned:

I am using 11.04 64 with the Classic desktop. I found that dragging windows was terrible rough. Consumed CPU when dragged.
I loaded CompizConfig Settings Manager. Go to the bottom where the 'Work Arounds' are. Enable 'Don't wait for video sync'.
Made a huge difference for me. Able to make it look and work like 10.10 for the most part. But I like a clean old Gnome look and feel.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Classic Desktop Switches To Fullscreen Too Easily
May 7, 2011I upgraded to 11.04 recently
I run 2 monitors, 1800x1200 and 1720x1180 approx (not exactly sure, but they are different)
I like to have many windows open on both screens.
The system keeps switching windows to fullscreen mode when I want to be able to see 5 or 6 partial windows on each screen.
It seems that if I align the edge of a window to the top of the screen, it switches to fullscreen mode, which is the last thing I want it to do.
Funnily enough, if I move a window to the edge of the screen, I want to be able to see the other windows on that screen. If I want fullscreen mode I hit the fullscreen icon; otherwise I want the size to stay the same. I dont want the window manager ever to arbitrarily give me fullscreen mode.
How can I stop this unwanted behaviour which is new to 11.04 ?
I have to admit that for my purposes the classic desktop is head and shoulders better than the default 11.04 desktop, but how did the release process manage to trash the earlier release's excellent desktop. Was Beta feedback totally ignored ? Rhetorical question, but hopefully someone up there listens.

The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.
P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?

Jun 14, 2010I have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.

Jan 24, 2011I have a Clear 4G+ Mobile USB modem. It is a Sierra Wireless Air Card 250u. I was able to get a brief 3G connection out of the box, with Squeeze 6.0. I would be happy to at least get connection manager working, as it does in Windows XP.
Subsequent edit. I did a clean install of 6.0 Squeeze, and Clear USB modum worked right out of the box. All I had to do was, right click on Network Manager icon on upper right corner of screen, checked enable mobile broadband. clicked on edit connection info. There I manually entered Clear as my provider, checked on connect auto, and left other fields blank or default settings. I still only get 3G, but I have multiple barriers to a microwave signal in my location. But I still will continue and may need help as I configure Clears Connection Manager, and or firmware.

Mar 13, 2010I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

May 30, 2011today i decided i wanted to use the desktop cube again, so i went through all the compiz settings and got it working in gnome classic. however, when i initiate ratation with the mouse (ctrl>alt>button 1) it is sloooow whenever there is a window open (even just one). rotating away from the workspace with a window does seem to speed up the framerate. when i had maverick 10.10 it was never this slow.

Jul 10, 2010I recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".
I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.
I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.

I did use Ubuntu Classic since install and was running fine. Now the screen is purple and cant even shut of the PC with the powerbutton. I can still get into terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 and that about it... I had Dock installed,task bar... all is gone, even the background picture changed.
