View 1 RepliesI have a Toshiba A665-S6092. Core i7 CPU and I installed a Kingston SSD so it's up to the job. It supposedly has keyboard backlight but I can't figure out how to get that function functioning. Now, I know this ain't real important but I have a feeling other people might like to have that too so I'm asking. Does anybody in Fedora Land have any experience getting Toshiba keyboard backlight working? Maybe I'm wrong about it having this option, I can't find any mention of it using all the tools at my disposal. lspci, the Gnome device lister, xorg keyboard config, etc. Apparently everything except the right thing. I've Googled until I'm Googleyed and searched this forum and LinuxQuestions.org (which seems to have been hijacked by Slackware fanatics over the last few years) and other forums like JustLinux, Linux.com. I can't remember them all. I've looked through source code that I could make no sense of and wondered why I was pretending to be qualified to do that until I realized how important this has become to me, although it is as I said a relatively trivial matter. If anybody knows and wants additional information I'll be more than happy to supply it. I'm running the default kernel for Fedora 14 64 bit, 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.x86_64.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus P50IJ-X2 and in lucid the backlight cannot be adjusted. The panel app doesnt work, when I click on it and try to adjust the slider it just disappears. When I reopen it the slider is at the top left corner of the screen.
The function keys seem to be detected alright, but when I press them I get the notification that the brightness is going down but nothing happens. Also after the first press the notification gets extremely laggy. If I press the brightness keys again it takes 30 seconds or more for the notification to show up. Also after the first press my volume function keys have the same behaviour in the notification area as the function keys.
Also messing with the controls in the power settings doesn't do anything. The strange thing is all of this worked perfectly in Karmic. The function keys, auto dimming, everything just worked out of the box. I have no idea where to start trouble shooting this so can anyone give me some direction?

I enabled VNC on my desktop the same way I did for Ubunut on my laptop but it's not working... It says connection closed which is a useless error message because it doesn't tell me what the ***** (I had this error appear randomly on Vista and the only way to fix it was to reinstall)

I'm writing a script to toggle LCD backlight on my laptop between minimum and previous/current level. I will then assign this script to a button. For this I need to be able to adjust backlight by using some command line utility. Also, this must be possible to be performed by a regular user.
What I have already tried:
1) The "xbacklight" utility. This didn't work. Program reported something like "no outputs found".
2) Used "acpitool -l <backlight_level>". This didn't work either.
3) The "echo -n 100 > /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness" works only when I am root. Changing permission of the file to allow writes by a user only valid until reboot. After reboot I need to change permission again, so this approach is not good either.
What works on my laptop, but with GUI:
1) Adjusting LCD brightness in "System->Preferences->Power Management" works.
2) Adjusting brightness with Gnome Brightness Applet works. However, after changing brightness with applet it says "Cannot get laptop panel brightness" and shows red crossed circle icon. Even after applet shows this message, it is possible to change the backlight level. It seems like the brightness level cannot be retrieved by the applet/system, but it can be set.
I can see that it is definitely possible to adjust LCD brightness through software because of the 2 things above, but how do I allow any user to change it from command line?
So, what are my other possible choices for changing backlight from command line?
After checking "enable desktop effects" in KDE. I'm dropped to login screen and can't login. How can I enable desktop effects? (As a solution to not being able login after checking the box I found that deleting kwinrc in .kde/share/config/ should help and it worked, so this is not a problem).

I don't know if it's related but I also when on login screen I can't console login - after warning I see black screen and nothing more.
I recently followed instructions to enable the nvidia driver. run the following commands:

then rebooted, a tricoloured loading bar appeared and finished, then all i got was a blank screen with flashing cursor. I don't get a prompt to login and can't access my account. I am dual booting on this machine with ubuntu, is there anyway i can restore my fedora partition and enable my nvidia graphics
i'm running on fc 11 x86_64 i'm start my computer with blank no boot or bios boot at all. i also dont know its because of hardware failure or fc11
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.
The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.
I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).
I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.
Based on much internet searching, I've found that I was/am not the only one struggling to get Fedora 10 to span the display across a laptop screen and an external monitor. So what I have here are instructions to do so:
1) Fedora 10 does not (by default) use an xorg.conf file to configure the display. So type the following command into the command line: yum install system-config-display
2) Go to the menu bar and navigate to System>Administration>Display. I left all the display settings as they were and hit OK (repeat this step twice to make an xorg.conf backup). This will generate the xorg.conf and back up files in the directory: /etc/X11/
3) Now we need to see what size virtual screen you need. Type the following command into the command line (without the quotes): "xrandr --output VGA --auto --right-of LVDS" It will tell you that you are asking for a certain size screen. Write those numbers down. I have a 1600x1200 external monitor so my number is 2624x1200 (1600+1024 x 1200).
4) Change directories to /etc/X11 and type (without the quotes): "sudo gedit xorg.conf" Scroll down to where the device section is. Mine looks like this:

Driver "intel"

Some videocards need to turn 3d acceleration off in order for dual screens to work. It is important that you turn off desktop effects if you turn off 3d acceleration!!! So under the driver line add the line (with quotes): Option "NoAccel" "true" Mine looks like this:

Scroll down to where the screen section is, and then find the display subsection. It should look something like this:

When I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

Today I decided to install Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition to ext3 partitions I made on the laptop's hard disk. The Ubuntu installation went fine, and Ubuntu was up and runnning. Then for fun, I checked the available WiFi networks in this apartment building. Six were secure but one WiFi was open, so I clicked it out of curiosity. Within seconds, my laptop's 15-inch screen went super-dark, nearly jet black.I couldn't read anything on the screen. Pictures and words were still on the screen, but just way too dark to read or to see with any clarity at all. I don't have a WiFi card in the laptop.Instead I use Verizon's usb727 air card on Verizon EVDO Mobile Broadband (3G)
I don't know if the free Wifi network hosed me in some way with a nasty trick (I don't have a WiFi card in the laptop--just the usb727 dongle which is an EVDO aircard), or if it was just coincidental that the screen went super dark seconds after clicking the open Wifi network in Ubuntu's network manager applet.When I reboot, I don't see anything anymore, not the POST, not Windows XP booting up, or Ubuntu booting up. The only way I see anything now is to connect the laptop to an external monitor using the laptop's blue video connector. And even then, I still can't see the boot-up POST process, or the BIOS screen.I can only see Ubuntu or Windows XP after they've finished loading, and only on an external monitor. Did the new installation of Ubuntu hose my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop's screen, or was it the Wifi network, or did the screen just coincidentally go bad minutes after I installed Ubuntu and seconds after I clicked the open Wifi connection?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an HP EliteBook 8540p laptop with associated docking station. It is running Ubuntu 10.04. Until now I have been successfully running TwinView with the nvidia-195.36.24 drivers - using the built-in LCD screen and an external LCD monitor, connected via an analog VGA cable.I've changed the screen over to a larger resolution Philips LCD, and it works fine over VGA.
However the image is not as sharp as I'm used to with other monitors, so I'm trying to get it working over the DVI port on the laptop docking station.However I have been quite unsuccessful in getting a picture to appear on the external monitor - Xorg is able to read the EDID information from the monitor, and according to Xorg.0.log has absolutely no problems with finding a valid mode and choosing this monitor as "DFP-1", alongside "DFP-0" (laptop display). But no matter what I do I can't get a picture. Xorg.0.log has no errors.
I have unsuccessfully tried: various combinations of xorg.conf options to set "ConnectedMonitor", "CustomEDID" with a EDID .bin downloaded over VGA, etc.a colleague has the exact same laptop and monitor, and has it running fine. However using his xorg.conf still produces no picture.nvidia-settings - tried lots of things a different DVI-connected monitorIt's as if the DVI port is fully functional in every way but its output is somehow disabled. I've also tried other monitors, they don't work either, yet do with a VGA cable.
EDIT: I have checked the DVI cable anything else in terms of enabling a DVI port.
I recently installed Debian Linux (Lenny, but I used a backpost kernel) A couple months ago, I dropped my laptop and it has GIANT cracks in it so that it is nearly impossible to see most of the screen. I've managed to work around it by hooking it up to my TV screen, but now that I've installed debian, and am trying to use bash as much as possible, I wonder if it would be possible to tell debian not to use any of the unusable screen. Is there a way to set this up? It's an Acer Aspire One 150 ZG5

One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect.Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been given the task of installing CentOS 5.5 on some new Fujitsu Siemens S710 laptops and have the following problem. The OS seems to install without any issues but when it starts up you can see the login prompt just as the backlight is off on the laptop screen. If you were to plug in an external monitor it will work fine and the screen is perfect. The only thing I can think of is if the video drivers need to be updated but I can't seem to fine any Linux ones. It seems to use the Intel mobile HD graphics chipset.

However, once video played using VLC, the screen simply blanks while backlight stays on, until system restart. Using Totem does not have this effect, but I like VLC.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn a couple of Linux laptops I have the built in screen never turns off it's backlight, regardless if a 'black screen' sort of screen saver is activated (this both for a laptop running an X-based desktop as well as for a laptop only having a text console) or if I even close the lid of the laptop (looking carefully in the dark, I can tell that the screen still has the backlight on, even if the laptop "know" it is closed).
This is a bad thing for a couple of reasons:
It wastes power
It generates heat which when the laptop lid is closed increases the cooling need (the fan goes on more often etc).
Backlights have limited lifetime like all electric components and IIRC, the less a backlight is turned on, the longer it will last. So, what is the best approach (considering a Gentoo with a 2.6.36 kernel) to remedy this? I recon that there probably are two approaches:
One for text-only laptops which never displays a desktop, e.g a laptop sitting there acting like a firewall or server
one for those running a Gnome/KDE/XFCE desktop (and a SLIM or GDM display manager).
The laptops I have in mind is a Dell Latitude CPi (built 1999, yes, it is from another millenea), a Compaq Armada M700 (built 2001) and a Dell Latitude D630. If this can be accomplished only by configuring things in the Linux OS (be it kernel setup or editing config files) without touching anything in BIOS, that would of course be preferable.
