Got a problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and a Lenovo T400 with an ATI Radeon Mobility HD3400 and ATI drivers /ATI contol center. Whenever the laptop wakes up from power-saving mode, the screen goes black (with some jagged mulicolored lines).
View 2 RepliesI have an Asus z9100 laptop with an Intel 855GM integrated graphics chip, which is running Karmic (the purpose of the laptop is to be a MythTV frontend so my understanding is that it needs to run 9.x in order to connect to the MythTV 0.22 backend - I have installed and configured this using the installable Mythbuntu package) and the laptop is subject to this bug which causes random freezes:

So, following advice for similar freezes I've seen, I have added the following options to my grub menu.lst on the kernel line:
nolapic nomodeset
and I have edited xorg.conf so that it makes use of the vesa driver instead of the Intel driver. This results in no freezes and if I wanted to watch Myth on the laptop screen I'd be squared away. However, the laptop has a damaged screen so the point was always to output the signal to an external monitor via its VGA out.
When I attach the external monitor and boot with the setup as described, the external monitor is never detected. But I noticed that if I remove the "nolapic nomodeset" from the kernel boot line, it is detected. However, signal is only output to it during the earliest part of boot (when the Ubuntu logo is in the center of the screen before the full-screen graphic with the animated progress line), after which the external monitor goes black and all the display output goes to the laptop screen. The external monitor power button is still lit up green as if it has been detected and is receiving signal, but it's just a black screen.

I have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAm currently using 8.10 (xubuntu). The machine's "issue" (I've searched for a reference, but the one I found was a forum thread with no answers) is that when the display is set to go to sleep after 8 minutes of idleness in the power manager, it projects a black screen instead.
I'm not sure what different 'power saving modes' a display/OS usually has, but in Windows, when set to 'go to sleep' the screen goes into standby, i.e something like 'no signal', and from what I've read a lot more power is saved in that mode than by simply showing a black screen.
It was the same when I was running 8.04 with a different graphics card, if that matters. Haven't been able to try a different display. Screensaver and timing and resume normal video out works ok.

I did a LiveCD to USB install, following the directions I found at [url] When I went to reboot to the USB stick, all I get is a black Screen (monitor is on and lit, just nothing on the display) No cursor or command prompt. I've tried holding shift to bring up the GRUB menu, changing splash quiet to nomodeset, or just adding nomodeset after the splash quiet thing. I've even tried xforcevesa instead of nomodeset still black screen. Looking at the logs nothing is current as of the last time I tried to boot the computer, it's strictly what was written when I installed it to the stick. Other things I've checked/tried, Pressing CTRL+Alt+F1 at GRUB to get TTY, all I get is that blank screen. I've Checked etc/default/grub to ensure the timeout was higher then 0. The Install CD seems to be OK but I have (as it did another install successfully) but I haven't done any throughal checking of it (there was no check this disk on the first screen of the LiveCD) The USB sticks also seem to be ok (in windows though). Using the disk utility on the live CD I did check the file system on the USB stick, the "/" partition came up clean. Anybody have any other thoughts on this install, any thing else I can check?

After this - the screen shows nothing more. All black, except some faint (extremely faint) lines...
I don't know - my first thought was that the screen itself was caput, but since it shows the initial screen - I guess it's not...
I'm having problems with the screen going black on startup in 10.10. It appears to go completely off (no backlight or anything). If I press ctri+alt+f1 I get a terminal, then I can ctrl+alt+f7 and the desktop appears. I have tried setting the mode to the correct resolution in xorg.conf and I tried using the vesa driver, but it still doesn't work. My graphics card shows as sis 661/741/760
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 to dual boot alongside Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron. This worked fine and after restarting it seemed to be working normally, after the first boot into windows though when I tried to restart the laptop again I just get a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left instead of the grub screen.I'm still able to boot the LiveCD fine and tried to reinstall Ubuntu but the exact same thing happened? Anyone know what's going on/how to fix this?

Basically, it hibernates/sleeps the laptop when I close the lid. When I open the lid though, it turns on the laptop, but brings me a black screen.

Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

I've been installing Linux Mint with OSX on a bunch of iMacs, and its been working perfectly excpet for one of the iMacs. The screen will just go black when I boot from a live CD, but I can hear the login sound play. It's strange because all of the other iMac's run the live CD just fine. What could the problem be? I don't know what I can do to troubleshoot this problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.
I have a sony vaio laptop(model-VPCCW27FX) 64 bit.I am currently using windows 7 os. I tried installing ubuntu using wubi and also by making a bootable disc. The installation proceeds well. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a busted laptop, case that is. The internals are great. So I stripped the screen and built a large box. I used a cnc router to build a lid that would flush mount the screen, and have a lip of wood left to cover the metal edges of the screen.
Ok, what happened is that the measure twice cut once rule or one of its variants went into effect, and I put the hinge on the wrong side of the box. Normally I would say just flip the screen around, but one edge is wider than the other, so that will not do. I want have the hinge towards the couch so that I can tilt it up and be able to easily see the screen.
So I need a way to invert the screen, and I can't seem to find a way to do it. The coffee table is an Emachines N-10, and my video driver is the Nvidea one, because karmic told me my onboard card is not quite up to the task of the other one.
F9 has been running great since it came out. I read that one should install F10 before F11 so I did install F10! Everything went great.
(1) Then I tried to install the F11 iso dvd. After the "anaconda started" message at the bottom of a blue screen, the screen went blank and occasionally the message would appear: "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d". Thinking the monitor had gone into power save, I hit many keys and moved the mouse to no avail.
I gave up! BTW I had checked all media CDs for errors.
(2) then working under F10, a little message appeared from the lower right of the screen asking if I wanted to upgrade to F11.
I accepted and again "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d" on a black screen after anaconda started on a blue screen. This time no ISO DVD F11. I've never seen such an error message in 11 years (off and on) of using Linux. HD Disk activity was showing on the disk activity light so I let it run all night and part of today. I hit a bunch of keys and moved the mouse and the blue screen returned saying all was done and restarting.
After restart, I seem to have F11 installed. I did a yum update and got some more F11 updates. On the grub screen, the only F11 kernel was the PAE kernel which I selected

Does F11 have any F11 kernels? BTW running >setup (hd0,0) under F10 grub ruined my XP prof OS on scsi 0 so I reloaded XP Prof from scratch.
Questions:
(1) what is this "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d"?
(2) Now I cannot boot to Fedora 11 and all the advice on how to reinstall grub has failed failed. Did a rescue and chroot /mnt/sysimage and the fdisk -l
Now XP Prof seems to be on /dev/sdc and Fedora on /dev/sdd. What do I do? In the meantime I have retreated to Fedora 10.
So, I just installed Fedora yesterday. I have been trying out different Linux distros and Fedora was next after Ubuntu and SuSE failed severely. So, I installed F14 yesterday and everything has been great... until I tried to set my JAVA_HOME variable. I followed the instructions here.
After editing $ vi ~/.bash_profile as the site instructs, I proceeded to log-out and log back in...except I can't log back in. I have repeatedly gotten the login screen, selected my account, and entered my password. When I enter my password incorrectly, it says 'Validation Error' and that is not what is occurring. The display goes black for a couple of seconds and I am redirected back to the log in screen.
I like to suspend my laptop when I close the lid. I have squeeze installed. When I open the laptop lid all lights indicated that it coming out of suspend but the monitor stays black. It is worse since I install the ati drivers for the card instead of the xorg. It did it with both but worse with nonfree drivers. I can get it to come out by ctrl alt f2 and the ctrl alt f7. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have tried to connect my GMA500 based Acer 751 to an external dsiplay via VGA connection. I couldn't get the right resolution on the external screen (1920/1080) so I disconnected it and rebooted. Now there is only an "unknown" screen in the display menu. I have rewritten the xorg conf file per instructions for enabling GMA500 but to no avail - conf file looks right but screen is "unknown", low resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio, instead of 16:9. How to restore to laptop monitor - I think I can take from there to enable the right resolution.

A message popped up about the nVidia drivers I could downlaod that would enable me to do more so I did. I restarted and all was fine. Nice effects, high resolution. However, after going on XP, then going onto Ubuntu, the screen ahs gone black. Here's my specs:Processor: Intel Core i7 720QM (1.6 GHz)Memory: 6 GB DDR3 (1333 MHZ)Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 330M (1 GB VRAM)Hard Drive: 500 GB (7200 rpm)Native Resolution: 1920x1080I shrunk my Windows partition, installed Ubuntu on it's own partition with swap space, and mostly everything went fine. When I booted up, the resolution was set at something like 2048x1536, and it only displayed the top left corner of about 70% of the screen. When I changed to any other resolution, it looked really bad, and the whole screen still wasn't displayed.
Then something popped up telling me to install a driver for my graphics card, so I did, figuring it would fix the problem. When I booted and picked Ubuntu, I was stuck with a black screen. So I restarted and tried booting into safe mode. I got in, and it displayed the whole screen at 800x600. Still no luck in regular mode, however.
I've been using ubuntu fine for a while when I decide to activate my nvidia graphics card.After rebooting, however, I hit nothing but a black screen. I've searched the nets and others have seemed to solve the problem after hitting alt+ctrl+f1/f2 and editing some files after that, but that doesn't work for me. Booting into recover console gives me nothing but a long stream of white words before it runs to --> done. and then it goes back to a black screen. If i go tosystem>administration>Additional drivers, the dialog comes back with "No proprietary drivers are used on this system. Ok so now I go to Ubuntu Software center and search nvidia..... I get the option to installl Nvidia binary x.org driver (version 185), I do so
Now in the Additional drivers dialogue it tells me "this driver is active and currently in use". Awsome, Now when I click on Nvidia X Server settings under system>Administration I get the following dialogue."You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."If i do what that last message said, run sudo nvidia-xconfig in the terminal, It gives an error saying the xconfig file is not there, and it will create one. The next time I reboot Ubunut just shows a black dos like screen asking for username and password. If i put it in, it does nothing, I end up having to re-install ubuntu.

The screen of my years-old HP laptop (running Natty) freezes and eventually turns black. Ctrl-Alt-F# works to switch to the terminals. My fan is even louder than usual. I spend some time fooling around with ps and kill and shut down some of the most resource-consuming processes, which quiets the fan a bit, but tty7 still shows a black screen except for my mouse pointer.
I finally decide to shut it down altogether, but then I think to myself, "Self, you've used the power switch to shut down before in this situation, but shouldn't there be a more proper way to do it in the terminal?" So I try shutdown, I have trouble with it, it proceeds to get hopelessly tangled up, and it looks like it's frozen up in mid-restart when I throw up my hands and decide to go for the old power-switch-for-five-seconds method after all. Now when I start the computer and select Ubuntu from GRUB, I get this:

I am running Fedora 10 on a Gateway Machine. I tried to install the corresponding drivers for acceleration but it seems to have broken the display. After the loading splash screen, the screen goes black and does not respond to anything. I did manage to see the Grub boot loader by pressing 3 a number of times while booting the machine. Any ideas for how to revert the computer to its normal display so i can try again at getting these drivers working. It is a tad bit annoying not having a display but hell, this distro is already as far as I can see 10x as good as Ubuntu.
View 13 Replies View RelatedRecently I install ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio laptop. After the CD boot I always got a black screen, after a week i figured that there's nothing wrong, it's just the screen doesnt show up on my laptop's screen. So I use an external monitor and It showed up as normal.
But I need to have it show up on my laptop's screen. I tried to use "additional driver" to activate latest Nvidia driver but after that even my external monitor doesnt work too. Latest driver doesnt work properly i guess. I did try to install older driver version manually but after I turned of gdm, install driver and reboot, my ubuntu always starts with tty1 command terminal. tried ctrl+alt+7 but it stucked at (checking battery state), startx doesnt help me return to graphical screen too.
I got help from a moderator here but the best result so far is to edit my /etc/default/grub. Change
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"

after the reboot I have it shows up on my laptop's screen. But it seems low-bit color,a bit grand to me(compared to external monitor, both w/o driver). Anw i checked system/preference>monitor . It showed up that my monitor:unknown. I can't choose other resolutions, refresh rate = 0.

im new to Ubuntu and not look at it all in depth yet. I have a small issue. Im using a Toshiba Satellite A200 Laptop. I installed Ubuntu on it yesterday because i was fed up of windows vista. On windows Vista i use to Plug the laptop into a 50" LG plasma and watch online movies and sports. And for the audio i used a USB cable from the laptop into a Pioneer VSA-AX10Ai Amp. My issue is.I plugged the VGA cable in today to test it on Ubuntu. I went into apps/sys/display and all of a sudden the laptop screen just kept flashing on and off. the Tv was saying in the top left 32" and because of all the flashing i could not do anything so i just turned the laptop off. I have not attempted the Audio Via USB yet . I know vista and my IMAC auto picked up the AMP but not on UBUNTU can anyone help me with the Screen issue ??????

My problem: while working on my laptop the system Offered an update to my ATI video card............so being the nube that I am I said go ahead and install it............yep that f'd it up. it ran for a while then froze up to the point I had to hard boot the machine. on restart the desktop splash/load screen displays but nothing else afterwards. I can get into restore mode and even terminal but can't seem to find anything........there is an autofix video option but that did not work either.
I spent a week loading and configuring this thing and do not want to start back from scratch...........I have too much stuff to lose on a new install. funny thing is that I just had set the system to do a complete backup of the ubuntu instance for tonight so I would have some way to restore this if something happened...........well it happend before the backup ran tonight........go figure.
Is there a way to reload the default system without loosing my files and such? I would just have to load vmware back on and some other programs but I a okay with that.
