Fedora Installation :: Kde 35 Seconds Lag On Preupgraded F12

Nov 21, 2009

I 've just upgraded from f11 to f12 via preupgrade everything went fine, i corrected the rpms in package-cleanup --orphans and i have nothing in --problems and --dupes

The problem is with kde, i get a ~35 sec lag (screen completely frozen, mouse moving but ineffective, keyboard shortcut like ctrl-c, ctrl-alt-backspace and ctrl-alt-fn executed only after the lag) when: starting kde (read below) closing kde (35 secs between the kde close sound and the beginning of any real shutdown) starting programs like: krunner, lancelot, konsole, gnome-terminal, kickoff it does not happen when running most programs, like opera, firefox, gedit, even xterm it does not happen in a gnome-session

Running krunner gives a dbus error message:

So i thought maybe it was a dbus timeout so i tried setting a lower timeout in session.conf and system.conf, but it doesnt change anything xcept kde startup: with the lower timeouts, the kde load screen takes less time, i see the desktop but then it hangs for 35 secs before loading programs and plasmoids with the standard dbus config, the kde load screen takes 35 secs more but then the desktop loads right.

Fedora Installation :: 14 Installation On Dell Vostro - Starts For Few Seconds And Freezes There

Dec 10, 2010

I have Dell Vostro laptop with Core2 processor 1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM. I want to install Fedora. I tried to install it with Fedora_14_ 32 bit and Fedora_14_ 64 bit. After booting by DVD or USB, I get initial blue screen in which I select Install and it starts for few seconds and freezes there, it does not move ahead. I got Fedora 32 bit DVD from Fedora so it should have come with checksum checked. So IMO DVD is ok, it is something else with regard to hardware detection, stopping installation to go ahead. I tried 3 times, but do not go ahead.

Fedora Installation :: 10 - Automatic Boot In 10 Seconds - All Text Is Jumbled Up And Distorted And Everything Appears Frozen

Jan 14, 2009

Im trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Shredded First 1.5 Seconds Of 2TB HD

Mar 9, 2011

I was trying to recall a terminal command and accidentally hit enter to a previously issued "shred." /dev/sdc was now attached to a drive I DID NOT want shredded, and I quickly realized the error and pulled the power to the machine. Unfortunately, shred issued long enough (~1.5 seconds) before I had the machine powered off. I KNOW the data on my 2TB drive is still there. All that was corrupted was a very tiny piece of the drive. I had 2 partitions in the following order: 750gb and ~1Tb. My question is, will standard disk recovery options like testdisk be able to recover the majority of my data?

After Ubuntu starts, it takes about 10 seconds, and the computer halts. No screen/mouse/keyboard activity. If I start Ubuntu under Recovery Mode, with failsafeX, it doesn't happen.

In the Windows all is fine. What did I wrong? [My CPU is: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2140 @ 1.60GHz, if it matters...]

Debian Installation :: LXDE Session Only Lasts 10 Seconds?

Apr 18, 2010

I have just upgraded to the latest testing packages with aptitude and now when I log in I get 2 error messages. One is "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem." and then if I click on view details I get "/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup..." As long if I don't click OK the system (LXDE) is completely usable and the only thing that doesn't seem to be working properly is wifi - I think I was using network manager which doesn't seem to be loading. The other error message is: "GTK+ icon theme is not properly set This usually means you don't have an XSETTINGS manager running. Desktop environment like GNOME or XFCE automatically execute their XSETTING managers like gnome-settings-daemon or xfce-mcs-manager.

If you don't use these desktop environments, you have two choices:

1. run an XSETTINGS manager, or

2. simply specify an icon theme in ~/.gtkrc-2.0.

For example to use the Tango icon theme add a line: gtk-icon-theme-name="Tango" in your ~/.gtkrc-2.0. (create it if no such file)

NOTICE: The icon theme you choose should be compatible with GNOME, or the file icons cannot be displayed correctly. Due to the differences in icon naming of GNOME and KDE, KDE themes cannot be used. Currently there is no standard for this, but it will be solved by freedesktop.org in the future." clicking OK brings up icons etc. and desktop background. I am using an SSD and when I set up the laptop I think that I made /tmp a folder on a ram disk (and maybe a few other temporary files as well). Could this have anything to do with these error messages? (one also pops up about battery empty when the battery is still @ 100% but that is less irritating)

Ubuntu Installation :: Freezes Up 30 Seconds Or So After A Successful Login?

Feb 17, 2010

Problem: Ubuntu freezes up 30 seconds or so after a successful login.

Background:I am running a Compaq Presario SR5030NX. It has had issues for a while with running Ubuntu properly. My computer suffers from this bug. I have managed to get the LiveCD running by adding the following to my boot parameters:

Code:
vga=792 i915.modeset=0
When I was running the LiveCD I found that it would freeze after about 30 seconds. I solved this problem by again changing the boot options. This time I:Press F6
Check noapic, nolapic, and pci=noacpi

I then proceeded to install Ubuntu.

My problem arose when Ubuntu did not modify grub.cfg to match the setting I needed in order to boot. I managed to modify in some of the settings correctly, I believe at least, but not all of them.

In its current state Ubuntu is able to boot, but freezes 30 seconds or so after a successful login. If I do not graphically login, I do still have access to VTY1-6. The machine does not freeze until a successful graphical login has been made.

Below is the relevant section of my grub.cfg:

Code:
menuentry "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,2)
code....

On another note:
The liveCD I have been running for 6 months is BackTrack 3 Final. Which does not have this issue at all. I would wager a guess that BackTrack 4 does though as it is based off Ubuntu instead of Slax.

Fedora :: 30 Seconds Of No Activity During Boot Sequence

Nov 22, 2009

I have been enjoying Fedora 11 for sometime, and decided to try Fedora 12. All in all it is working, but the boot sequence seemed much slower. I decided to use bootchart to examine the boot process on my old F11 and new F12 installations. The result show F11 booting in ~34 seconds, and F12 booting in ~57 seconds. Interestingly, the first 30 seconds show that only kthreadd, khelper, and ata/0 are running. CPU and disk utilization are both zero during this 30 seconds span, then all of a sudden everything starts loading, CPU and Disk utilization spike up, and ~23 seconds later I get to the login screen. I sent an email to Harald Hoyer about this, and to my surprise he was kind enough to respond. He suggested I check the BIOS to make sure I had disabled the floppy drive, which I did. The problem persists, so I was wondering if anyone here was having a similar issue and if so how they have dealt with it. I have blacklisted the floppy module (just to make sure)

Now, it doesn't matter if I load it in virtualbox or if I boot up my comp with the USB stick, I get to the Linux boot menu, choose "Persistent Mode", and then below it shows "Automatic boot in 10 Seconds..."

Once it counts down to 0 it just resets to 10, and keeps on counting!

Fedora :: SSD Speed - Boot Up Takes 30 Seconds

Jun 25, 2011

Some days ago I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora and it is just great, Gnome 3 looks awesome. I waited for the installation of Fedora until I got my new OCZ Vertex 2 SSD and the first benchmarks were astonishing. The SSD has an average Read/Write speed of ca. 270Mb/s. Well, now I installed Fedora 15 and I was expecting a boot time of less than 20 seconds, but in fact it takes 30 seconds. By way of comparison, Ubuntu takes on my old HDD about 27 seconds, so a bit less than it takes on the SSD.

Then I tested some software, I started Eclipse and compared the start time on Ubuntu (HDD) and on Fedora (SDD). Starting Eclipse from the HDD took about 6 seconds while starting from the SSD took about 7 seconds. The differences in the results are not big, but taking into account that the SSD is at least twice as fast as the HDD the results are really strange. Now I would like to ask you how I may increase the performance of Fedora on my SSD?

Some notes about my hardware:
Intel Core2Duo 3GHz
4GB Ram
Sata2
On this screenshots you can see both drives in comparison, the ssd is much faster.

Fedora Servers :: Getting A Cheap UPS, The Powercuts Will Last Usually A Maximum Of 30 Seconds?

Jan 17, 2009

I'm out in a village and we get more powercuts than I like, and recovering the journal on my server is getting rather irritating. I'm looking into getting a cheap UPS, the powercuts will last usually a maximum of 30 seconds, so I only need a few minutes.

I've been looking at:Plexus V 500VA UPS
Plexus V 1200VA UPS
APC SUA750I Smart-UPS 750VA

I know near to nothing about these things, my question is will those work with a machine with a 700W PSU? How do you know? The 500VA doesn't really mean much to me. Ideally I'd like to get my desktop on there too, but that's more for convenience than anything.

Will any of these do the job? Any Linux compatibility issues I should plan for? Any recommendations from personal experience is greatly welcome Edit: I will be happy with a UPS that can inform Linux power is down, and get the server to cleanly shutdown straight away, I'm more interested in a clean shutdown than maintaining power to use the machines during the outage. Edit 2: Can UPS devices be piggybacked to one another to provide extra uptime? i.e. Could I run 2 of the 30's so when the first runs down, the 2nd carries on?
