i could manage to install fedora 12 on my laptop (asus f6a) using the iommu=off option, but when i try to boot it i just reboot without even seeing the fedora logo, i just see the the prompt for 5 seconds and then it reboots.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install F11 in my new laptop [URL] and I'm unfortunately about to give up, but I want to give this option. What I want to do is use the live cd (on a usb stick) to boot on a text-only session. Supposedly the way to do that is type "linux text" on the boot prompt but the problem is that I can't even get there. After booting I get the grub menu with two options: boot, and verify and boot. Hitting esc doesn't bring me to the boot prompt. I can get to the grub menu, but I'm not sure what to do from there. And I can edit the boot and kernel options, but I'm not sure whether that will allow me to log in a text-only session.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIm trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIt disappears too fast! I'm using the netinstall spin of the Fedora 13 x64 disk. As far as I know, I still need to tell it to load Anaconda from the network. Is that correct? Anaconda loads from the CD, but I would prefer to use the downloaded image. Should I just let Anaconda go through its paces then tell it where I downloaded the image to on my network?
The documentation is woefully inadequate when it comes to using the netinst spin (yes, I am already thinking about providing help on the install docs based upon my experiences).
building an install cd or dvd media that will automatically install the Linux software on a client pc. There is no network connectivity so the client can only be loaded with Linux from CD or DVD media. The crux of the matter is that I can not automatically install the Linux software on client WITHOUT typing linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg at the boot prompt.
I want to avoid any user prompts and just have the software install with the RPMS that I need for this client pc at the boot prompt. Actually, when the boot prompt commences, I would like the software install to start with no user intervention. I've tried several different methods in isolinux.cfg, but the OS always wants boot prompt for the cdrom. Can the boot prompt information be read automatically from the isolinux.cfg with out user intervention? I'm looking for the same behavior as a LIVE CD that kicks off with no boot prompts after a few seconds. Here's a copy of my isolinux.cfg

I have a Toshiba F30-114 laptop on which I want to have a dual boot Windows XP/xubuntu configuration.The problem is that when I install Xubuntu as dual boot, Windows XP gives a blue screen of death for a second and then reboots in the begining of the windows boot sequence.I can choose Safe Mode, Safe Mode With Networking, Safe Mode With Command Prompt, Boot With Last Good Configuration, and Start Windows Normally. But nomatter which one I choose it will result in a bsod following a reboot.I tried to remove the Xubuntu partition, which somehow also resulted in removing the XP installation. I then put the harddrive in an external case and used EASEUS Partition Recovery 5.0.1 on another machine which got back the Windows partition. Now Windows works again without any bsod.

I have burned another DVD using Infra Recorder with minimum write speed but with the same problem. I have Ubuntu already installed on the computer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been enjoying Fedora 11 for sometime, and decided to try Fedora 12. All in all it is working, but the boot sequence seemed much slower. I decided to use bootchart to examine the boot process on my old F11 and new F12 installations. The result show F11 booting in ~34 seconds, and F12 booting in ~57 seconds. Interestingly, the first 30 seconds show that only kthreadd, khelper, and ata/0 are running. CPU and disk utilization are both zero during this 30 seconds span, then all of a sudden everything starts loading, CPU and Disk utilization spike up, and ~23 seconds later I get to the login screen. I sent an email to Harald Hoyer about this, and to my surprise he was kind enough to respond. He suggested I check the BIOS to make sure I had disabled the floppy drive, which I did. The problem persists, so I was wondering if anyone here was having a similar issue and if so how they have dealt with it. I have blacklisted the floppy module (just to make sure)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI used LILI to create a live USB key - I believe I used the 686MB version. Everything worked fine. I wanted to try the full DVD install, so I did the same with that image.
Now, it doesn't matter if I load it in virtualbox or if I boot up my comp with the USB stick, I get to the Linux boot menu, choose "Persistent Mode", and then below it shows "Automatic boot in 10 Seconds..."
Once it counts down to 0 it just resets to 10, and keeps on counting!
Some days ago I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora and it is just great, Gnome 3 looks awesome. I waited for the installation of Fedora until I got my new OCZ Vertex 2 SSD and the first benchmarks were astonishing. The SSD has an average Read/Write speed of ca. 270Mb/s. Well, now I installed Fedora 15 and I was expecting a boot time of less than 20 seconds, but in fact it takes 30 seconds. By way of comparison, Ubuntu takes on my old HDD about 27 seconds, so a bit less than it takes on the SSD.
Then I tested some software, I started Eclipse and compared the start time on Ubuntu (HDD) and on Fedora (SDD). Starting Eclipse from the HDD took about 6 seconds while starting from the SSD took about 7 seconds. The differences in the results are not big, but taking into account that the SSD is at least twice as fast as the HDD the results are really strange. Now I would like to ask you how I may increase the performance of Fedora on my SSD?

On this screenshots you can see both drives in comparison, the ssd is much faster.
I downloaded Ubuntu and was expecting a prompt to re-boot or something to see the change. Nothing happened. I am still in Vista. Where did I go wrong?

View 6 Replies View RelatedTwo days ago I decided to migrate from Fedora to Ubuntu 10.04. On the Ubuntu install I chose to format the entire disk as I do not want a dual boot system. I have three disks and have set the bios to boot from dvd, then main disk, then 2nd disk, then any other bootable drive and coming from a working Fedora I know I have my "slaves" and "Master" pin positions on the disks set correctly.
When I try to boot the fresh install of Ubuntu I do not see any menu options, no boot image nothing, I get taken immediately to a grub command window and I dont know how to fix things from there. I have tried to fix things by booting into the "try before you 'buy'" thing on the installation cd and I can see that Ubuntu has been installed on the main disk, but all in all Im stuck.
So I had Ubuntu Server installed and I decided to make some new partitions using gparted via a live usb of Ubuntu desktop. And so I think messed up pretty badly. Ubuntu Server won't boot and I get the following error followed by a grub rescue promt:

To me, it seems like some boot files may be missing if not the whole system. After I made the partitions, the live USB of Ubuntu was still working fine until I rebooted.So here is the bigger issue, I figured I would just reinstall everything all over again, but instead I can't.

I'm running Ubuntu within VMWare on a Macbook. I followed these steps [URL]... Recommended) to upgrade form 10.04 to 11.04, which actually upgraded to 10.10 first, and then a graphical upgrade brought me to the 11.04 upgrade, but then i ran into the problem where a grub> prompt appears when i start up the machine... nothing else happens. I found this thread [URL] which seemed similar to my problem, but the suggestions didn't work.

The reason I want the GRUB menu to show up of because I would like to dual-boot BackTrack 5 with Windows 7.
Ive always had luck doing any kind of updates to my system. I let it auto install the security updates lastnight. Today when I rebooted the machine it just hangs. I would like to attempt to boot only to a command prompt so that I can atleast use vi to edit files and fix the system. Do I have to edit grub to do this or is there keys I can press during boot up?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Dell Vostro laptop with Core2 processor 1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM. I want to install Fedora. I tried to install it with Fedora_14_ 32 bit and Fedora_14_ 64 bit. After booting by DVD or USB, I get initial blue screen in which I select Install and it starts for few seconds and freezes there, it does not move ahead. I got Fedora 32 bit DVD from Fedora so it should have come with checksum checked. So IMO DVD is ok, it is something else with regard to hardware detection, stopping installation to go ahead. I tried 3 times, but do not go ahead.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy FC12 laptop won't boot. During the attempted boot, after blue/white progress bars finish displaying on the bottom of screen, nothing more seems to happen. The screen isn't totally blank in that I seem to have a text cursor and keyboard input is displayed. But, no prompt, no login prompt, X isn't running, etc. If I hit ESCduring boot, it displays the boot messages and the boot sequence stops after "Starting atd". I'm not sure if it's related, but I had previously experimented with creating a new xorg.conf file by running "Xorg -configure' and was testing the new file with "X -?? /etc/x11/xorg.conf.new" (I forget what the -?? option was). I assumed that this would not overwrite the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file and that if I ran into problems, that the original xorg.conf would be in place. how I can get this miserable thing to boot?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI 've just upgraded from f11 to f12 via preupgrade everything went fine, i corrected the rpms in package-cleanup --orphans and i have nothing in --problems and --dupes
The problem is with kde, i get a ~35 sec lag (screen completely frozen, mouse moving but ineffective, keyboard shortcut like ctrl-c, ctrl-alt-backspace and ctrl-alt-fn executed only after the lag) when: starting kde (read below) closing kde (35 secs between the kde close sound and the beginning of any real shutdown) starting programs like: krunner, lancelot, konsole, gnome-terminal, kickoff it does not happen when running most programs, like opera, firefox, gedit, even xterm it does not happen in a gnome-session
Running krunner gives a dbus error message:
So i thought maybe it was a dbus timeout so i tried setting a lower timeout in session.conf and system.conf, but it doesnt change anything xcept kde startup: with the lower timeouts, the kde load screen takes less time, i see the desktop but then it hangs for 35 secs before loading programs and plasmoids with the standard dbus config, the kde load screen takes 35 secs more but then the desktop loads right.
I had 250gb hard disk with dual boot, xp and ubuntu 10.10.Yesterday, i tried to upgarde my ubuntu 10 to 11 from a live cd....b4 doing so, i used a win software EasyBCD to fix the mbr but it didn't work properly..and i ignored it(my biggest mistake)and deleted the ubuntu partion from the windows device manager. It just displays "Booting from Live CD" for few minutes and again displyas the same above error.What should i do now?Its ok if i m not able to recover my data back...i hv sycnd my docs on the internet.

My issue is that I'm not able to boot from the grub prompt as described for installing grub from a LiveCD https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD. I can see grub is installed but is missing the kernal and other files. code...
I ran the boot_info script and the output is attached. From what I can tell it cannot even detect an OS being installed, but I've kept everything up to date and never had any issues. Everything was fine yesterday and now this. Also, I tried the Boot Repair CD and that did not work.
I had Ubuntu installed, i installed Debian and there was no dual boot. So i formated all the hard disk to install only Debian. It installed but at boot i get error: no such device and the grub rescue> prompt. i googled for a solution and nothing worked:
- i tryed reinstalling grub, not worked
- i did the windows cd fixmbr trick, not worked
- reinstalled debian with fixmbr the first step and nothing
- tryed deleting with dd the mbr, not worked
- reinstalled grub from debian rescue, not worked
what should i do? i can't access my computer? please tell me how should i fix it? the google guys will kill me because i put their servers on fire
Everything was going great earlier today when suddenly, my PC on a fresh boot, gave me a message that said something like "Ubuntu is running on low graphics mode ..". It was running a low res, i think it was 640x480, and gave me some repair options like a. Boot in low res mode for just one session b. Trouble shoot this error etc..There were 3 more options but i don't remember what they were.
i chose "boot in low res just for this one session", but it gave me the same error the next boot. Then i tried troubleshooting, which didn't work (restoring to a backup config was no use). Then finally i rebooted and started Ubuntu in Recovery mode, and i did something like "Fix broken packages" because , from the list of options it seemed like the only one which would help at that time.
But now, whenever i choose the Ubuntu option after starting my PC, it just restarts my computer. My other OS is Windows 7 which boots just fine. Hope someone can help me with this . In the meanwhile i'll try making a new MBR or something.
I have Fedora 12(Constantine) i686 installed on my PC as my O.S. i got a porblem that when i was trying to install the a bundle(NetBeans IDE 6.8 with JDK 6 update 20) after sometime my PC restarted itself due to electricity problem. When it was started i saw the icon of NetBeans IDE 6.8, then I tried to open it, but all in vain. A screen opens for a few seconds and then it disappears. I think it is the problem of improper installation. And now I m totally unable to uninstall that bundle.

10.04 fresh installed fine, working, few reboots, all good. Installed Nvidia 195 drivers. Not so good, still works fine, but framerates not as good as the 190 drivers I'd been using with karmic. So I installed nvidia-glx-190 and nvidia-190-modaliases with the nvidia PPA for jaunty. They didn't appear on the restricted drivers list, I rebooted in the hope they would, and now my boot process is as follows.
Boot, met with a blinking _
Goes blank
Another blinking _
Green static appears momentarily, then very fast the Ubuntu splash appears, the white orbs all turn orange, and there it hangs. The splash itself is in the wrong resolution.
Everything is the same as when it was working except it didn't totally freeze at the end. It responds to nothing except the power button (and sometimes not), I can't access a shell or the grub menu at any stage during the boot process like I usually would, and nothing in the boot log seems out of the ordinary.
What should I do? I'm on a LiveCD desktop, got the harddrive mounted.

I decided to upgrade my FC installation to the latest version - FC itself offered the upgrade when I turned the machine on, so it appeared that it was nicely packaged to make the upgrade easy.After a long download of packages, the machine rebooted and then started taking me through configuration options (timezone, disks to use for the installation etc) but then it crashed trying to write to disk and now leaves me at a grub prompt whenever I boot.Is there any way to "get at" the installation files and get back into trying to install or do I now need to download an ISO and burn a DVD and start all over again?
