I know this isnt normal for everyone but im getting a 29 to 30 second bootup on 10.04 from grub to login screen.. i installed boot up manager and disabled some of the things listed on a few recommendation pages on google where would i begin to figure this out? before i upgraded i was booting up at like 10 seconds tops..

I just did a distribution upgrade on my laptop from 9.1 to 10.04, and it went fine for the most part except this issue. After it boots up, I don't see any window titles/scrollbars/borders and on clicking the icon for "Show desktop" on the bottom left, I see the following error message:
"Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."
After googling a bit, I realized that gnome-wm is not starting automatically and so I have to manually start each time to see the windows working properly. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to make sure that gnome-wm starts automatically? I know I can put it in my .bashrc but I want to do it the correct way if possible. If not, I will have to go with that workaround.

My ubuntu(10.10) installation takes a relatively longer time (90 seconds) to boot. I think part of the problem might be related to an error message during boot related to usb drivers.

I upgraded to 11.04 on April 29, and since then my boot time has gone from about 30 seconds to 1'30''. I have tried to disable the splash screen to see what happens, but I just don't have so much background in booting processes.

I've been using Thunderbird 3.0.x for some time and found in it a good replacement of TheBat. However, few days ago, ubuntu being ubuntu crashed and since then, Thunderbird freezes after 10 seconds every time I try to start it, sending CPU usage through the roof. I have 8 imap accounts in it and my profile folder is ~2.8gb I tried purging the installation. I tried fsck on all partitions. Windows Thunderbird using the same profile folder works just fine.

Sample: "* wil be removed in a future UDEV version..." On another box, I get some "/etc/*/ipv6" should have a .conf file. Should I worry / fix up something before next upgrade?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIm trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI wanted to use Ubuntu on one of my old laptops (a great, speedy modern OS on a modest hardware PC). Unfortunately this PC can not at the time read all CD-ROM's (can't figure out why it does read some) and I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 - the only CD it did read at the time.
I've used it for two years but I never got my wireless card to work (OK, most of the time it was collecting dust) A couple of days ago I finally realized how to use ndiswrapper (lol...) and I was able to get a working Wi-Fi connection on this laptop. I then proceeded to upgrade it over the internet, to Ubuntu 8.04, then 8.10, then 9.04 and, last night, to 9.10.It has worked through each and every of these updates, but after 9.10 the PC won't even boot (after "GRUB loading...).
I have dual boot my Windows 7 PC with Ubuntu 10.10 recently. Ubuntu boots well until I upgraded the system with Upgrade Manager. Then all of a sudden it won't load anymore.

Is there a way for the time at the top of the screen to display seconds as well as the date ?
My clock seems to be about :40 seconds off... before i upgraded from f-13 i had my time controlled by ntp(how to verify ntp is enabled) ? even with network time = yes, it seems to lag a little.
I figured out the network time. it is under a whole separate menu for some reason.

time() API gives the number of seconds since 1970 Jan 1st 00:00:00 without considering leap seconds. How to get the number of leap seconds which needs to be considered in the value returned by time()..(gmtime will convert time_t to struct tm* and considers leap seconds. I have a dual boot (2 hard drive) system, and upgraded to 10.4. Booting into XP results in a flashing cursor that doesn't do anything. I know that GRUB screwed everything up, but I need to know what to do--and assume I don't know what I'm doing--to restore my dual boot ability.

I have a Core 2 Duo iMac that I had set up for triple boot using Fedora Core (probably FC8 )and GRUB, Windows XP Pro, and Mac OS X v10.5. Some time ago, I had to blow out and reinstall my Windows installation because it had developed errors, but this also blew out my GRUB, leaving the Fedora install non-bootable. Since I never really used FC on this machine much, I didn't worry.
Lately, I've acquired an hp Mini 110, on which I'm running Linux Mint 8 (Helena), and I'd like to upgrade my FC partition on the iMac to Karmic, but when I run the installer, it won't let me use all of the existing Linux partition, instead wanting to resize it to accommodate both FC and Ubuntu.
How do I make the installer simply replace FC with Karmic, using the entire existing partition? I'm sure earlier versions of Linux that I've used had a simple "erase all Linux partitions and install" option, and the "Manual" option doesn't appear to read the existing partition information (I was too afraid to go any further).
I ended up quitting the installer, which put me into the Live CD environment, where I used the File Browser to "Format..." the Linux partition, but when I went back to the installer, I ran into the same problem, and it didn't seem to matter if I unmounted the existing partitions or not.
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10 and now my Windows XP will not boot from grub. It shows up on the grub boot list but when I select it, all I get is a black screen. It worked perfectly just minutes before the upgrade, but now I cannot use windows, which I need really badly at this point.
