Fedora :: Show Seconds In System Clock?
Jul 19, 2011
Unlike FC14, in FC15 there are very limited options available in Date and Time settings.
I want to see day of the week, date and time with seconds in my clock panel.
I was able to get first two using "gnome-tweak-tool".
But I'm not able to display seconds in the clock.
how to enable seconds in the clock?

My system clock loses about 10 seconds every minute. The hwclock is fine. I've tried different kernel args (clocksource=acpi_pm, nohz=off, highres=off). None of these have any effect. I am running Fedora 11 with kernel 2.6.30-105.2.23.fc11.x86_64 on an AMD Istanbul node (Processor 2439 SE).

By default, Fedora 11 sets my clock to military time. For example it says 16:22. I would like it to show civilian time (or at least know how to do it) I logged into the clock settings and had to put in the root password, but couldn't find where you do this. If you scroll on the time for hours, it just goes from 0 to 23 and back, not to AM and PM like some others.

The system runs just fine then all of a sudden it "freezes". For example an input box doesn't respond nor can I scroll down the page. But when the system comes out of the freeze 5-15 seconds later, it suddenly does all the input that was used during the freeze. The scroll and letters suddenly show up. I don't loose mouse control and I can do some other system functions but not all of them.
Here are some various system info's
[osprey@host ~]$ uname -a

I want to set up a web server, and I want to set up NTP so to always keep the clock in sync. I have installed a very basic system (No GUI or X components), to keep it slim and thereby a little less prone to security problems. However, does anybody know what the Synchronize system clock before starting option in system-config-date actually does in terms of changing config files or permissions? I'd like to know so I can do it manually via the commandline.

I'm running Fedora 14. I'm running a Athlon X2 with 4gb memory and nVidia 8400. I'm using the nvidia drivers ver 260. I'm running KDE 4.6. I've disabled desktop effects (when turnt on they work a charm, performance issues are the same either way). If I open any more than a few applications at once, the system grinds to a halt. even working with Kwrite is painful and it can take several seconds just to move the cursor, browsing the file is almost impossible.
When I have even 7 windows open X goes into a frenzy and sticks around 90% cpu usage. Even with no windows open if I move my mouse between screens X cpu usage stays between 50% and 90%. The system is unbearably slow. i have a XP Pro system with the same spec, lower GPU and I have no problems having 2/3 Visual Studios open, Photoshop, a few skype windows, Eclipse and the android emulator the system remains responsive but with this Linux box I can't even do basic stuff in Kwrite without it grinding to a haltJust.

When I travel, I would like to tell my laptop that I, as a user, am in a different time zone that what the OS may think is local. And I would like the clock on my desktop (default Gnome bar date/time display) to show the local time.
Instead, I currently have to use sudo and change the system time... (click on the clock, choose time settings, set system time -- there are no other choices given). The applet thing allows me to add other locations, but they only show up if I click on the icon, as extra times below the main one.
Am I missing something? Using the wrong app?

I recently installed FC14 on my system as I was previously on FC8. Everything seems to be working fine, but I ran into an issue today where I wanted to kill firefox. I checked in gnome system monitor and I did not see a running process for firefox or firefox-bin. I also ran a "ps -e" command from a terminal as root and did not see it there either. I don't know if this is a fedora issue or a firefox issue, so I am posting it here first.
And just to vent on something that IS a firefox issue. I have the new firefox 4 running and when I click the X in the top corner, it doesn't give me the option to save my current tabs and exit like the previous versions did. That was a feature I liked.

I read the manual for systemD and systemctl, and I could not see a way to display the dependencies of local-fs.target. My system hangs at boot, somewhere before the local-fs.target completes. Not only do I know know what is failing, I don't know what it is trying to do.I can boot to the emergency target. But that does not trigger the problem. I have the logging options on, but it FREEZES when I try the local-fs.target, so I never get to open the logs. I'd like to know what it is trying to do, so I can step through manually.
I boot to emergency. Manually start each local-fs.target.wants/* then local-fs.target It waits a long tome for something, then it "works" but does not mount my lvm filesystems. I try again for default.target, and this time local-fs.target fails with a dependency, and the system hangs again. syslog is not available at the time of the hang. What ever is the first fail, is lost when the console scrolls.I's looking a lot like I must do a full reinstall of this system.

While dual-booting Windows and Linux, Linux sets the system time to UTC, so Windows thinks it's midnight near mid-morning. Is there any other way to tell Windows to use UTC? I've seen the registry tweak proposed here and other places. This does not work on my computer (Windows 7 32-bit).For reference, the registry entry is this:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTimeZoneInformation]"RealTimeIsUniversal"=dword:00000001

I triple boot with XP on the first partition, sidux on the second and third and Ubuntu on the fourth. sidux controls grub2. When I boot into XP or Ubuntu, my clock gets set ahead 4 hours to UTC time (I'm on Eastern daylight time).
Is there a way for all three OSs to display the right time?

I'm experiencing some weird short freezing issues in Squeeze and / or unstable. Everything works as usual, then the system will freeze for some seconds if I don't do anything, or resume faster if I move the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard. I thought it was a wifi related problem, as I have an intel iwl4965 , here is what I often see in dmesg:
[ 2608.910307] iwl4965 0000:06:00.0: Queue 4 stuck for 2000 ms.
[ 2608.910317] iwl4965 0000:06:00.0: On demand firmware reload

Wrong system clock; Right hardware clock. 'date' and 'hwclock --show' show big differences in time. Hardware clock keeps the correct time, but 'date', the system clock, doesn't (often wrong in a matter of hours). So I'm sure it is the problem of the kernel. I'm tired of synching hardware clock with the system clock all the time. How do I get Ubuntu to use the hardware clock instead of its own in the first place?

Try as I might I cannot seem to get the system clock to display local time. It looks like it's stuck on GMT. In the System>Administration>Time and Date I have my local time zone set correctly and also set to update automatically with an appropriate time server selected. It still displays my local time +5 hours (I'm central time, USA).

I'm completely new to Linux. I'm having the hardest time trying to do the simplest things. I'm using Kopete and I was wondering if I can put the icon on the system taskbar by the clock? I can't drag it there, won't work. I also tried to right click the taskbar and open 'add new items' but Kepete doesn't show on the list.

I restored my .kde directory after changing some stuff unrelated to my clock and now all plasma clocks are exactly 5 hours faster than my system time (the correct time).I've set the time zone for Date&Time in System Settings properly and that's working well and I've ALSO gone into the time zone settings for the plasma widgets and switched between UTC and Local manually but that doesn't do anything.

the time on system clock given with 'date' command keeps moving forward about 1 minute for every hour of realtime. The box is up all the time so this is not an issue with motherboard battery. An equivalent box with the same hardwre/OS and applications doesn't have the same level of drift. I'm not sure what else this could be.Both boxes are Centos 5.2 64-bit.

I had a problem where my system momentarily hanged for a few seconds. Sometimes when opened a window like Dolphin or when I made a window full screen, sometimes when clicking on the screen while watching a DVD or sometimes when I clicked on a button it just froze for a few seconds and responded.
I have fixed the problem by disabling "Processor Power Managament" in the Bios.

We have a weird problem with two PC's running SUSE 11.3. The built in PC speaker beeps every 2 seconds when you are typing.
One of the PC's (an old celeron with intel graphics, 32 bit suse 11.3) has had this problem for at least a year but we don't use the keyboard much. The other one is a Core i5 with nvidia graphics (suse 11.3 64 bit). This machine was fine until it was upgraded from suse 11.2 (with zypper dup).
It is like a torture and is driving us nuts. It only does this in X11 - text mode is fine. It's probably something obvious but we are stumped.
