Fedora Installation :: Cannot Access The On-disc Diagnostics XP Runs Fine?
Apr 29, 2009
I am trying to migrate an XP Laptop to FC 11. I downloaded the latest KDE-Live-x86 image and burned it successfully. When I boot with it however, I get the splash screen and no further.Any option I choose, ncluding the CD diagnostics and Memory Test result in the following:invalid compressed format (err=1)--System HaltedI'm certainly no expert, but am not a linux noob either, yet am at a total loss.Google has yielded many theories, but no solutions. It seems that this error is not exclusive to FC 11 either. Older fedoras, as well as non RPM distros seem to be intermittently effected as well.I have verified the MD5 of the iso, and have verified the cd against the iso. The disc gives the same error in another computer. I cannot access the on-disc diagnostics. XP runs fine.

I'm sorry for this stupid question, but I have nowhere found it.I need to access to my USB disc from text mode (In Fedora LiveCD I see it and i can access /media/New Volume). In F12 runlevel 3 in mc I see it in /dev/disc/by-label as @Newx20Volume. But I don't know what is the correct path.

I just installed Arch (x86_64). I am trying to setup Xorg. I have not installed a DE or WM yet, I just want to make sure Xorg is 100% first.
I had to edit the xorg.conf myself to direct it to my Intel graphics driver, but now it seems to work perfectly.
Except after exiting X, my terminal reads:
Code:
xinit: connection to X server lost
waiting for X server to shut down xterm: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) or KillClient on X server ":0"
XIO: fatal IO error 4 (Interrupted system call) on X server ":0"
after 1011 requests (1011 known processed) with 3 events remaining.
xterm: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) or KillClient on X server ":0"
I'm pretty new to Linux and have no idea what this means! But I'm assuming it's not normal, because it says 'error'.

Ubuntu 9.10
Wine 1.1.39
ATI HD5750
Catalsyt 10.2 (propriety)
For whatever reason, Wine won't run any games (though I tried only two), but runs MS Office, Notepad perfectly fine. When I click Borderlands form wine menu the computer is loading something for a while and then stops. When I try Civilization 4, the game starts loading and crashes immediately after saying "Init Engine" on the screen.
If I run them from the console, I get the same error for both:
Code:
wine Borderlands.exe

I was able to run sshfs successfully, but I am not able to access the mounted folder. For example, if I execute the following commands, I will get stuck at the last step "cd folder" forever.
username@username-laptop:~$ sshfs username@IP_address: folder
username@IP_address's password:
username@username-laptop:~$ cd folder
similarly, if I try to do a "ls" in the parent folder, it will also get stuck.
I am able to ssh to the remote server though.

I have had slack 12 on this computer for quite a while with never a problem. Slack 13.1 was installed a few weeks ago without a problem, it seems to run forever as long as it is root. When I go to user it will crash 2 or 3 times a day. When it crashes it is a total lockup that only the off/on switch will reset it. There is no certain time or thing that causes it, it will just lockup while surfing using the command line switching or opening a new le. Any suggestions will be appreciated! I have googled and searched with no info found.I do have 13.1 on another computer that works fine, it has an nvidea video card in it and it is 64 bit.

I have an Ubuntu server running Couch Potato, Sick Beard and Sabnzbdplus. Everything "works" pretty well in a sense that CP and SB push the NZB's to Sabnzbdplus, but Sab crashes regularly (haven't found the solution or the cause for this problem, so if you have some advice regarding that, it's welcome). To counter this problem (Sab crashing) I have a script written which checks if Sab is runnning and if it isn't start it:
Code:
bart@Pyro:~$ cat CheckSabRunning.sh
#!/bin/sh

I originally posted this in I kind of feel like no one is going to answer... is it because I mentioned Fedora? Since I'm trying out Fedora 12...maybe someone here can help me figure out why I have the problem in Ubuntu, but not Fedora? Here's the situation:I've been having very strange problems on Firefox in Ubuntu 9.10 for a few weeks now.haven't been able to, except for a few minutes....once..... and it never came back. This was when these problems had already been happening and after several tries to reach Fedora's site.
Other problems are just as strange but not so bad or consistent: Pages sometimes seem to randomly not be found or they are found on the wrong server or something. After several minutes, though, they usually go away after refreshing the page. One of the strange examples from the "not found" or error pages I got was when I tried reading Wikipedia.org and it told me it "could not be found on this server," but....the server and URL it listed were from Google.com! The address bar showed that it was trying to find the page on Google! No, I didn't copy and paste or type the address, I was in an already-working Wikipedia page that stopped working and thought it was on Google's servers! Isn't that weird? (I might have screenshots somewhere...)
Anyway, any ideas? I have tried creating new, empty profiles on Firefox, but they still cannot access Fedora's sites. LiveCDs work fine, though. Also, I copied and used a profile from my Laptop to here and it also cannot access it.I even tried System > Administration > Network tools and tried Fedora's site in the Ping tab and it usually works just fine (sometimes it gets nothing, though). Also, I'm not using wireless or dial-up.By the way, I've only been using Linux a couple of months now, so sorry if I don't know stuff

My .jar file needs and uses some files in the same directory it's in (everything, including the jar was unzipped into said directory). It runs perfectly when I do java -jar file.jar in the command line, but there's trouble when I double-click the file when running from the file system manager. I've tried a custom command under properties ie java -jar, but the problem is that the .jar file doesn't seem to be able to use any of the files in the same directory. When running, the jar can't find any of the files that it needs.

I had F11 i586 installed on my X86_64 machine. I used preupgrade to move up to F12. (I had the space problems noted elsewhere, but eventually got all of the F12 packages installed.) Grub now has the following titles:
Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686)
Upgrade to Fedora 12 (Constantine)
Fedora (2.6.30.9-96.fc11.i586)
If I boot to F12, it boots up to a point where I get garbage graphics and the system freezes. If I boot to F11, SELinux relabels and the system then boots normally. I'd like to boot normally into F12.

It seems I had no say in the matter. The installer automatically did text mode and it starts up in text mode now. I'm very new to Fedora, though I had Ubuntu installed recently but removed it because Fedora seemed a little more interesting to me. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2807nr laptop if that helps.

I've just upgraded my from F11 to F12 via software update and found F12 extremely slow to the extent that only the mosue cursor moves, the rest does not - not even opening folders or starting application.
My specs:
Core2Duo
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
It seems that
npviewer.bin is taking up up to 50% of CPU. Xorg takes 20%..

I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old computer which was already a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu machine. As there weren't many problems I felt encouraged to install it on a newer dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10) machine. Apart from a lot of bother with the wiFi card, all appeared to be well. However, I decided to boot into Ubuntu to make sure that it worked as before and was disagreeably surprised to get a message saying that Ubuntu only had 12.5 Mb disc space left when previously it was installed on an 80 Gb hard drive.
I have had a look at the drive, using gparted and found that there are two ext4 file systems, one on /dev/sdb1 and one on /dev/sdb3 which have used 2.93 Gb and 500 mb respectively. /dev/sdb4 has an exclamation mark (!) beside it and is lvm2 and occupies 68.15 Gb and appears to be unused.
Would it be possible to shrink this lvm2 file system and expand the one that contains Ubuntu. If so, how can I identify where Ubuntu is located? there is also /dev/sdb2 which is an extended partition of 2.93 Gb as well as /dev/sdb5 which is a Linux swap of 2.93 Gb

I'm trying to access a login page that runs xbap.

Doesn't seem to work in Ubuntu - it just downloads the file instead of taking me to a login page. It's not a browser problem as I have the latest version of Firefox, which works fine under Windows XP.

I was reading the fedora Disk requirements and it said you need 9 GB of disc space. Which partition should this 9 GB of space be on? I plan on having a / root partition, /home partition, a swap partition, and a /boot partition.
Quote: 1.2.3. Hard disk space requirements for all architectures The complete packages can occupy over 9 GB of disk space. Final size is entirely determined by the installing spin and the packages selected during installation. Additional disk space is required during installation to support the installation environment. This additional disk space corresponds to the size of /Fedora/base/stage2.img (on Installation Disc 1) plus the size of the files in /var/lib/rpm on the installed system.
In practical terms, additional space requirements may range from as little as 90 MiB for a minimal installation to as much as an additional 175 MiB for a larger installation. Additional space is also required for any user data, and at least 5% free space should be maintained for proper system operation. [URL]

Somehow the install iso disc won't go into upgrade mode. My f10 is on the hard disk, but needing to be rescued. I would do f11 upgrade; but can't get the disk to do an upgrade. It only wants to install.
Checksum was good, etc. iso is fine. Is there a log file or something which it keeps getting hung up on, thinking it's supposed to install instead of upgrade which I could change or delete?

Seven times I was downloading the fedora11 disc1 i386 iso and the sha256 checksum was bad. When I try ftp.belnet.be mirror I can get the correct checksum. I understand the copy process between mirrors probably was errors. Becarefull friends. This bad iso aborts the installation process.

I just loaded ubuntu 9.10 on an old PIII in dual boot mode with win98SE. The pc has a DS-XG YMY470 Yamaha sound card, and the sound is available in Win98SE. In ubuntu, there is no sound while playing games or playing music. I tried the initial diagnostics as suggested in the stickie with the following results:
aplay l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcard found...
lspci v
00:09.0 Multimedia audio controller : Yamaha Corporation DS1L Audio
Flags : medium devsel, IRQ 12
Memory at e6000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [Size=32k]
Capabilities : <access denied>
Kernel modules : snd-ymfpci
Is there any way to get the sound started, or do I need to change this card ?

When installing FC 11 after a few questions about language I got:
"The Fedora disc was not found in any of your CDROM drives ...."
I read a couple of the threads on the problem and it seemed people were shooting in the dark for answers. Two issues mentioned were SCSI and DMA problems. If I go into the bios and disable the DMA or SCSI driver, and then I re-enable them after installing Fedora, will Fedora see the DMA or SCSI? Or will the fact that they were disables during installation keep Fedora from recognizing them later?

I downloaded the 7 isos and burned them to CD properly, but I can't seem to get my Powerbook to startup from CD 1. I've held down "c" while starting up just like usual, but it's not recognizing the CD as a startup disc. It simply goes into OSX or OS9. I'm a Linux novice, unfortunately.
