Slackware :: 13.1 Runs Fine As Root, Crashes When Run As User?
Jun 26, 2010
I have had slack 12 on this computer for quite a while with never a problem. Slack 13.1 was installed a few weeks ago without a problem, it seems to run forever as long as it is root. When I go to user it will crash 2 or 3 times a day. When it crashes it is a total lockup that only the off/on switch will reset it. There is no certain time or thing that causes it, it will just lockup while surfing using the command line switching or opening a new le. Any suggestions will be appreciated! I have googled and searched with no info found.I do have 13.1 on another computer that works fine, it has an nvidea video card in it and it is 64 bit.
I use a SLES-machine (should be similar to opensuse I guess) and ad AIX-machine and got the following error:
Every time a none-root user runs an "at"-command on the linux machine, there is an error written into the errorreport of the AIX-machine. the error is the following: <82>Jul 12 22:32:09 linux-hostname atd[10754]: PAM audit_log_user_message() failed: Operation not permitted
I already checked the files /etc/at.deny (exists with users listed like "alias, backup, bin, ..." but not the user that causes the error-message) and /etc/at.allow (which does not exist but is not necessary, as far as I could read from the internet).
I just installed Arch (x86_64). I am trying to setup Xorg. I have not installed a DE or WM yet, I just want to make sure Xorg is 100% first.
I had to edit the xorg.conf myself to direct it to my Intel graphics driver, but now it seems to work perfectly.
Except after exiting X, my terminal reads:
Code: xinit: connection to X server lost
waiting for X server to shut down xterm: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) or KillClient on X server ":0" XIO: fatal IO error 4 (Interrupted system call) on X server ":0" after 1011 requests (1011 known processed) with 3 events remaining. xterm: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) or KillClient on X server ":0" I'm pretty new to Linux and have no idea what this means! But I'm assuming it's not normal, because it says 'error'.
Ubuntu 9.10 Wine 1.1.39 ATI HD5750 Catalsyt 10.2 (propriety)
For whatever reason, Wine won't run any games (though I tried only two), but runs MS Office, Notepad perfectly fine. When I click Borderlands form wine menu the computer is loading something for a while and then stops. When I try Civilization 4, the game starts loading and crashes immediately after saying "Init Engine" on the screen.
If I run them from the console, I get the same error for both:
Code: wine Borderlands.exe fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation 0x4296000 0 0x36ffda8 4 err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered
I was able to run sshfs successfully, but I am not able to access the mounted folder. For example, if I execute the following commands, I will get stuck at the last step "cd folder" forever.
username@username-laptop:~$ sshfs username@IP_address: folder username@IP_address's password: username@username-laptop:~$ cd folder
similarly, if I try to do a "ls" in the parent folder, it will also get stuck.
I am trying to migrate an XP Laptop to FC 11. I downloaded the latest KDE-Live-x86 image and burned it successfully. When I boot with it however, I get the splash screen and no further.Any option I choose, ncluding the CD diagnostics and Memory Test result in the following:invalid compressed format (err=1)--System HaltedI'm certainly no expert, but am not a linux noob either, yet am at a total loss.Google has yielded many theories, but no solutions. It seems that this error is not exclusive to FC 11 either. Older fedoras, as well as non RPM distros seem to be intermittently effected as well.I have verified the MD5 of the iso, and have verified the cd against the iso. The disc gives the same error in another computer. I cannot access the on-disc diagnostics. XP runs fine.
I have an Ubuntu server running Couch Potato, Sick Beard and Sabnzbdplus. Everything "works" pretty well in a sense that CP and SB push the NZB's to Sabnzbdplus, but Sab crashes regularly (haven't found the solution or the cause for this problem, so if you have some advice regarding that, it's welcome). To counter this problem (Sab crashing) I have a script written which checks if Sab is runnning and if it isn't start it:
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 computer with an ATI Raedon x1250 graphics card.
Everything runs fine for about 3 hours, then it will randomly stop working.
Symptoms: Mouse stops moving for 10 seconds. Screen goes white. Speakers start repeating last 10 seconds of whatever was playing. Screen goes orange or purple with lines across it and random symbols...
At that point I hardware restart my computer and all is fine again
I recently ran into a problem with my install. I accidentally messed with the bottom panel in my KDE on my root account. This caused my desktop to freeze up. Every time I attempt to restart into my root, it loads, but is completely frozen. Is there some way I can overwrite my KDE config files without starting X server or from a standard user account?
What if I want to install Slackware for my parents so then I no longer have to get rid of virus and malware for them. Is there way so they never have to log on as root? Any way to access CD's and to shutdown computer? I only know how to do those things as root.
After a few hours work I have managed to set up pptd so that my daughter can log into her account at Imperial College. My problem now is that I need to have a script that she can run if she wants to log in. She will have to invoke a couple of root commands and I do not want to give her the root password What she needs to do to set up networking is:
Just installed Slack-13.1 and it looks really good. At least as root. Problem is, I create a normal user, and when I log in as the user, startx just gives me a black screen.
Just recently discovered that for a non-root user the touchpad on my Acer laptop ( Aspire 5720z fyi ) isn't working in X ( KDE or XFCE ). It does work in in tty (at login) and for root it works in both environments.
I'm running 13.1 x64 on it, with the normal security patches via slackpkg. Didn't notice before since I normally use a mouse (and thus I do like the touchpad being disabled so I don't 'tap' away the cursur while typing).
With the recent holidays (with family visits and all) I took the laptop on my lap,.and voila: no trackpad movement.. I did some searching allready, but this problem seems to be solved since a while, and isn't supposed to be in 13.1
FROM RELEASE NOTES Piter Punk for udev and slackpkg work, updating the shadow password system, writing the initial patch for polkit to use a shadow authentication backend so we could consider using KDE 4.4.3, and making tap-to-click work with Synaptics touchpads out-of-the-box,)

I have yet to make flash run smoothly on Linux. I tried Chromium, Firefox, flash versions from 8 and up; it runs but makes firefox crash, chromium does not crash but it's all slow and breaky. Flash 9 runs and does not crash but has no sound. No version on any browser can run HD flashes, it just breaks up and runs like in 3 second interval frames.I have tried everything I've read and spent 3 months trying to watch the nfl.com unsuccessfully. Is flash working smoothly for anybody?
My .jar file needs and uses some files in the same directory it's in (everything, including the jar was unzipped into said directory). It runs perfectly when I do java -jar file.jar in the command line, but there's trouble when I double-click the file when running from the file system manager. I've tried a custom command under properties ie java -jar, but the problem is that the .jar file doesn't seem to be able to use any of the files in the same directory. When running, the jar can't find any of the files that it needs.
My cli php is missing modules as regular user but not as root. In particular, mysql is missing... which is how I came across this issue. I'm running Slack 12.2 w/ php 5.2.14, standard Slack packages. As a normal unprivileged user:
-> whoami ; php -v ; php -m |wc -l ; php -m |grep mysql jerry PHP 5.2.14 (cli) (built: Aug 25 2010 15:17:31) Copyright (c) 1997-2010 The PHP Group
[code]....
I've tried reinstalling php and it made no difference. php.ini is not to blame. I've Google'd this to death, no luck.
I haven't used my VB for a few weeks however all of a sudden it refuses to work for my normal non-root user. It's almost as if it can't find libraries in the /opt/VirtualBox directory. Initially it refused to start completely so I linked the required libs into /usr/lib64 ( yip real hack. Then it started but a vm would not start, and comes up with an error about a missing lib again which is definitely there. My non-root user is in the vb group and nothing besides system updates has changed. vb 3.2.10 slack64-current.
I have Slackware 12.2 installed on my computer, as well as a Windows Xp. I have a hard drive named '/fat-d', which is formatted to be 'fat' and is normally used under XP. This drive can also be accessed under Slackware, both as root and the normal user.I can not write to the directory '/fat-d' when I am not root, it is normal since 'ls -l' shows that its owner is root and other users have no permission to write. The problem is that, when I tried (as root) to change the owner to the normal user:# chown [normal_user_name] /fat-dI got an error: chown: changing ownership of '/fat-d/':Operation not permittedBut how can the root have no permission to change the owner?
"failed to run * as user root, the gksu-run-helper program is not found or is not executable"
Tried googling and checking threads at LQ didnt find a solution or another instance running slackware64 current.. everything built fine, tried and everythings executable...I also have Alien's multilib installed, with only firefox and flashplugin as 32bit, everything else 64bit. I can't open any apps as root by normal user
Have homebrewed machine, was running Fedora 8. Installed Fedora 10.Firestarter firewall manager keeps crashing after about 5 minutes. Restarts, runs for a while, then crashes.Thought it might be an IPTABLES turf war with the native Fedora 10 gui firewall manager, so disabled that at System > Admin > Firewall. Also disabled SElinux. Still have problems.Firestarter firewall seems to work OK, just the gui Firestarter monitor/manager.If anyone has ideas as to cause, I'll take a clue.I could use Firestarter to generate the IPTABLES by ..manually editing the /etc/firestarter/inbound|outbound/allow-.. files and then../etc/init.d/firestarter restartBut I find the events log useful to look at. Anyone know where the events log file is kept in the file system?
Is It possible to change a process running in root-user to non-root-user by setting suid / uid / euid / gid etc... I so please instruct how, when and wat to set in order to change a process running in root-user to non-root user
Installed Firefox, Installed flashplugin-nonfree using apt-get, run FF as root and flash plays ok. Run FF as user and no flash. It prompts to download plugins and then fails.
This is on RedHat EL 5.2. I extract the tar.bz2 file downloaded from Mozilla's site, and drop it in user/firefox. I try to run Firefox, from a launcher I made, and nothing happens. I use the root terminal, and cd to the firefox directory, and run ./firefox, and it opens. The user owns all of the files and directories, but it still won't work unless I'm root
I migrated joomla to my new server and noticed that the script doesn't have the permission to edit it's own configuration file and write to the cache folder. All my files are owned by root, which I guess isn't a good idea.
As what user do the PHP scripts run? Or is this system specific? I don't want to chmod all files to 777 so I'd just like to change file and folder ownerships to the user that is executing that script.

I've just installed Exaile media player via pacman and I try and run it, nothing happens. I run it from the terminal and get the error: IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/scott/.config/exaile/exaile.log'
I looked in the log file stated above and it says nothing. I can however, run exaile under root with "sudo exaile" and it runs fine then. I had a similar problem with Emesene messenger, but couldn't find anything on any forums so I just used Empathy IM Client instead. It appears that its possibly something to do with the read/write permissions relating to ~/.config/ folder... because it does the same with banshee also, and the errors relate to permission denied to all folders within ~/.config/ whereas in root it can read and write and access this folder and the config files within fine. How I can try changing the privileges relating to this folder?
I wanna that the pc starts (on/off), the pc arrives to gdm. It waits for an user to log.But but at the boot of this machine, I would like that an user has a script started in the processes (NO X cuz bash script). How can an user runs a script at boot of the PC ? (once only and no one loged)
