Ubuntu Multimedia :: Initial Diagnostics As Suggested In The Stickie?
Mar 26, 2010
I just loaded ubuntu 9.10 on an old PIII in dual boot mode with win98SE. The pc has a DS-XG YMY470 Yamaha sound card, and the sound is available in Win98SE. In ubuntu, there is no sound while playing games or playing music. I tried the initial diagnostics as suggested in the stickie with the following results:
aplay l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcard found...
lspci v
00:09.0 Multimedia audio controller : Yamaha Corporation DS1L Audio
Flags : medium devsel, IRQ 12
Memory at e6000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [Size=32k]
Capabilities : <access denied>
Kernel modules : snd-ymfpci
Is there any way to get the sound started, or do I need to change this card ?

I am trying to migrate an XP Laptop to FC 11. I downloaded the latest KDE-Live-x86 image and burned it successfully. When I boot with it however, I get the splash screen and no further.Any option I choose, ncluding the CD diagnostics and Memory Test result in the following:invalid compressed format (err=1)--System HaltedI'm certainly no expert, but am not a linux noob either, yet am at a total loss.Google has yielded many theories, but no solutions. It seems that this error is not exclusive to FC 11 either. Older fedoras, as well as non RPM distros seem to be intermittently effected as well.I have verified the MD5 of the iso, and have verified the cd against the iso. The disc gives the same error in another computer. I cannot access the on-disc diagnostics. XP runs fine.

I got a Logitech N700 laptop rest for Christmas. I love it, the sound is a vast improvement over my laptop's speakers. However, there's one problem with it. If I leave it plugged in (via USB), when I power my laptop on, the initial volume is set at max, so my login sound is super loud. It doesn't matter what I set the volume to when I power down the laptop, it will always be at max when I power on the laptop. how to get Ubuntu to remember what sound level I powered down with, or at the very least set a default sound level so that it's not at max when I power on my laptop?

Why is this going on? I use this machine to watch media like heck I would remove these files and break 50%+ of my functionality. There is a whole pile of "red" entries in this repo and it's all multimedia stuff mostly.

After several crashes during videos it seemed like a good idea to fsck root. Downloaded the latest systemrescuecd and ran it at boot. The error message was 'bad magic number, corrupt superblock' with a suggested command to try another superblock. That failed with the same message. Tried tune2fs to force fsck at boot and got the same message. The drive is less than 6 months old and the installed system is working more or less ok. The command I used was 'fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc2'. What am I doing wrong?

I accidentally promoted my initial account to admin and now I want to revert it but I don't remember the specific initial user privileges. So there are 2 questions:
1) First, is it safe to "downgrade" the account, logging in with another one? In general what's the best way to do it?
2) Could someone enter Administration->Users and Groups->[select initial account]->
Advanced Settings->User Privileges and list the privileges that are on by default?
I repeat I want the privileges of the initial account, which I suspect are above those of basic users (that are added later) and below admin...

I'm trying to install the latest release of Ubuntu from the official site, 10.10.
I downloaded the 64-bit edition first to install. After burning it to a CD, it launches in my PC just fine and lets me go through the install process. I'm letting Ubuntu use up the whole HDD, so no special options are being chosen during the install. At the end of the installation, it asks me to restart and I hit OK, it closes out of the box and leaves me looking at the default background... forever.
Thinking I did something wrong, I tried again, but this time left the box to download updates and install 3-rd party software unchecked. Same thing as above, it appeared to install just fine but hung after I tell it to reboot.
Lastly, I downloaded the 32 bit edition to try, and it gives me the same error.
If I hard restart my machine after waiting on the background image for a while, it will not boot when it comes back up. My PC just remains at a screen after the BIOS acting like it's searching for bootable media.
I'll be honest that I haven't waited for over 15 minutes for it to restart. But should it really take that long?

I keep having issues at the main password screen. The computer starts, I click my login name, type password, start to hear the music, screen distorted, then reboot. Sometimes I have to do this up to 20 times before it finally logs in.
I am running a Biostar U8668-D Motherboard with 1gb ram. Video is onboard. I am not sure what type. I think it may be S3 Pro Savage.

I'm running Lucid Alpha 1. Installed it about two weeks ago. Until a few days ago, the wireless networking was the best I've witnessed on any o.s. However, after last Wednesday's updates, connectivity now lags about 10-30 seconds whenever I open any web-page or access the repositories via aptitude. Granted after it gets going, it's fine. I noticed this same behavior in 9.10. I tested my XP connection and found no problems. .

I've installed mailman on 9.10, using apt-get, have apache2 setup already. However I'm getting 403 forbidden issues when trying to access [URL] I may have mucked something up as initially i jumped straight in and created a virtualhost and played around with the URL redirects. but as far as I can see, it's back to its default and it's still not working... When I try to access the page, in my apache error.log, i get this:

I had karmic koala installed a few months back, but wasn't using it cause i didn't have time to properly configure it. Last night, i was thinking of probing around with it a little and found an update for it and went ahead and installed it. After rebooting, GRUB refused to load any of the OSes, but i was still able to access ubuntu with a reduced graphics option (safe mode?). Tried reinstalling etc etc but nothing worked. In my frustration, i whipped out my windows CD and deleted the partition for ubuntu.
Now, after the loading of bios, i get "error: no such partition. grub rescue>".Is there anyway i can get delete grub and get my vista to boot normally? or would i need to reformat everything again? maybe someone can point me in the right direction if a similar thread had been posted before.

I have Lucid running on a Toshiba Portg R500. Last week it started hanging for just over one minute at the initial Toshiba screen. That is, the screen with the Toshiba logo and a series of boot-from options (HDD, CD, Network, USB) along the bottom. I don't know if the machine is even interacting with the OS at this stage. Also, neither Ubuntu nor the machine recognises the CD-ROM tray any longer. As in, I can't boot from CD and I also can't mount a CD when in Ubuntu. I can, however, boot from a USB startup disk (after the one minute delay).
I'm not sure how to collect helpful data on this sort of issue, especially since I can't see any threads that point to similar problems. The only strange thing I did the day this problem started was to forget to unmount a truecrypt-encrypted USB key before shutting the laptop off.
I've reinstalled Lucid but to no avail. I assume that whatever problem I have is a BIOS problem (and so strictly not for here)? As you can imagine though I want to make sure I've accounted for all other possibilities before fooling around with the BIOS.

I have had a working ubuntu 10.10 installation for about 2 months. I had it set up really nicely with my TV card and xbmc. I was really happy until I tried to boot it the other day to show a movie to the Mrs. All I seem to get is a flashing cursor after the initial grub selection. This is the same for both recovery mode and normal. I have booted it after editing the boot selection to removed the quiet splash and it seems to hang after a line that says some thing like "usb 1-4.2: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd". The machine boots fine in to the Windose partition or in to a live CD.
I have done a bit of searching and I am struggling to find a good step by step troubleshooting guide. I dont really want to blat my setup but it would teach me a lesson about documenting things and blindly doing upgrades. I have included the results from my boot info below in case that points to anything.

My issue now is, i need to add users other than the initial account i created, but when i log into the desktop remotely, it will not let me add a new user. I cant seem to use any of the boxes in the User Settings command box. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Somehow my restart/shutdown button is gone from the top right hand side of my main menu in Ubuntu. I've managed to get a shutdown button back on the menu by right-clicking it and selecting "Add to Panel..." but I really want the original button back in there. I'm not sure what caused it to disappear but I think it was the updates that ran yesterday. Is there anway to restore my main menu to its original, pristine state? If so, that would rule.

My laptop recently died and I have invested in a new desktop. The specs are as follows code...
Anyhow, I had been running 10.10 on that laptop. Everything ran swimmingly (until the internal components died of course). I am currently running XP on the desktop and am looking to run 10.10 again as a dual boot. I already partitioned off 200gigs for Ubuntu upon set up of XP. I have tried using the USB LiveCD I used for my first install on the laptop, as well as a LiveCD CD I had created for the laptop. Neither one worked. The LiveCD came up with an error and the USB got to the point where there was the purple screen with white dots and it never got past that point.
I downloaded a brand new 10.10 disc earlier today and I got to the point where the white line blinks on the black screen. Unfortunately that is as far as the boot got. It has some initial writing at the top of the screen saying it was loading a process, and then it produced an error of a int file of some sort. I'll go back and try it again and get a better grasp on the error. Also, after the error message I was given the ability to type commands (it actually told me to type 'help' for a list of the commands available to me), but I had no clue what to do with them.

I have 3 windows computers and just bought linux server. All of them are currently connected to switch. There is also Wireless AP connected to switch and ADSL router connected to switch (yeah, I know its possible to buy a 3in1 but this was bought piecemeal). ADSL is doing the DHCP and I'm not using any other advanced services.
Now, I want to route everything over the linux server. I got the 3 LAN cards for him (one for wireless, one for LAN and one for ADSL) but when I connect everything this way its not working (surprise surprise). I'm following Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO but its surprisingly sparse on the topic of network setup and i dont know how to proceed now. Since the server will be a choke point I presume I need to setup DHCP server on him? First question is: can I use same netmask on all of these subnets? Ubuntu DHCP server guide uses both static and DHCP and am not sure if I should also use static on some routes or is it ok to use DHCP on all.
Also, when I was installing ubuntu server only one LAN card was used (eth2) so ifconfig shows only lo and eth2, but when I do ifconfig eth0 up and ifconfig eth1 up it doesnt look like its working. Anyway, hope somebody has some tips to point me in the right direction, primarily DHCP server setup and if I missed any steps...

I'm attempting to install Kubuntu on a new laptop but seem to be having some strange issues. It's a Dell Latitude E5410 with 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM and Intel Core i5-520M(2.4GHz). I'm trying to install Kubuntu 10.10. When I restart the machine and boot from the CD for an initial install it seems to hang for a VERY long time. It will eventually get to the boot options (after hours) but seems sluggish. Once the install gets going everything seems decent except for that I can't seem to get it to finish. I know the CD is good since I used it to get Kubuntu on 2 desktops and another laptop in the last 48 hours. I've also burned another CD just to make sure. The checksum was spot on. Does anyone know what I can do to get this remedied?

Last night I created a fresh install of Ubuntu Server 10.10. I was working through a tutorial to set up a development server for home use, and everything worked perfectly. I was able to install OpenSSH, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (and Vim) with no problems. I was also able to use "ifconfig" to determine the network address of the server and I was able to view web pages on the server from another machine on my home network, using a browser. So, everything was "peachy". [By the way: The server is connected to the router using a CAT5 cable. This is a WIRED connection] I shut the Ubuntu server down at the end of the night and, now that I have rebooted this morning, I have apparently lost the network interface. I cannot ping anything from the server. If I run ifconfig, only the "lo" configuration is listed, with the 127.0.0.1 address.

Yesterday I downloaded 10.10 desktop version and burned an image to a CD. After installed to a Dell Dimension E510 machine successfully (I wiped out windows completely), the first update found 315 items to update. After downloaded, ubuntu asked to reboot the machine. Since then, the machine is stucking on the ubuntu startup screen. I suppose it is applying the updates; however, it has been over 12 hours. Is it normal to take that long?
