Fedora :: Subject - Modify Only Parameters In Kernel Config

Aug 28, 2009

I want to start to play with "homemade" kernels. (To get some experiences in this subject). I want to do this step-by-step. I have already read a lot about this. I have a Fedora 10 running. So I want to start with this. I have read that there is a "special" way to create a kernel for Fedora. [URL] OK. I understand this +/-. When you build a new kernel with an other version number, you have to rebuild all the modules with this new kernelversion, and you have to install these also.

But : I want to start with modify only some parameters in my kernel config. Do I need to rebuild and re-install the modules also? Will it not be enough to rebuild only the kernel? (vmlinuz) Where can I find some information about the options I can disable in my kernel to speedup my system? (boot process ed). I want to suppress the loading of unneeded modules. I want to understand the options in menuconfig (and there are a lot of options ! ! )

Fedora Servers :: Can't Access Or Modify File Unless Directory Mode Is 777 And Files Are 666

Nov 8, 2010

I have a multi user system for my roommates and myself that has separate folders for each of us. I've got user authentication working with samba, but unless I set every file and folder readable/writeable by all users, I can't browse it or edit the files.This isn't ideal as the shares are open to other users access, so I'm hoping there's a way to keep folders at 750 and files at 660 while allowing samba users to browse, delete and edit.Also, the samba share is actually a mounted NFS share from another server. Both the NFS server and the Samba server have the same users/uid's. When a file is created from a Windows host via the Samba client, the NFS server's permissions do show that the correct user owns the files, but since the files aren't mode 666 but 640 I can't edit or delete the file.

Ubuntu Servers :: Config - Change / Add From The Default OpenSSH Config Files To Get Tunnelling To Work?

Jul 10, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 with OpenSSH, trying to create an ssh tunnel (for web traffic) to it from my (also Ubuntu) laptop. This is the command I'm using to create the tunnel:

Code: ssh -ND localhost:8080 george@192.168.1.20 I had it all working on a virtual machine.. which was deleted What settings/lines do I need to change/add from the default OpenSSH config files to get tunnelling to work? I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstall Apache2 - Recreating Config Files

May 11, 2010

I've deleted /etc/apache2 and did run:
Code:
sudo apt-get -o DPkg::Options::="--force-confmiss" --reinstall install apache2.2-common
to get the default config back.

But starting the server via:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2
results in:

Code:
Syntax error on line 161 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf:
Invalid command 'Order', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration
line 160-163 look like this:

Code:
<Files ~ "^.ht">
Order Allow,Deny # line in question
Deny from all
</Files>

The funny thing is that the exact same definition is in a debian lenny server config on another server. So why did this install a not working config?

I just removed apache2 via:
Code:
sudo aptitude remove apache2
sudo rm -r /etc/apache2
and reinstalled it via:
Code:
sudo aptitude install apache2
which also did not fix the config bug?

For testing I installed apache2 on another ubuntu 9.10 and did just copy the folder /etc/apache2 to my local installation - this fixed the problem. Still, why cant I reinstall apache2 with a working config?

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Unneeded Config Files Automatically?

Jun 18, 2010

1) Whenever a new release of Ubuntu comes out, I've always done a full replacement (Booted up live CD, formatted / and formatted /home) to ensure there's zero incompatibilities, including configuration files in my /home. That has, finally, gotten annoying and I was wondering what the actual chances of a configuration file causing problems was in the 6 months that Ubuntu was released in. Also, special consideration for Gnome 3 (aka gnome-shell) coming out with the current gnome configs.

2)Any way to remove unneeded config files automatically? I don't always use purge when I remove a package just in case I want to reinstall it, well weeks later I def don't want it, is there an apt or dpkg command that will automatically remove them after the package is gone? I know autoclean and autoremove handle orphans and unneeded .deb's

3) How stable is Sidux in reality? Ran it in a VM and had a few errors every so often while using it, but i wasnt sure how much of that was the fact it was a VM. Some say its stable enough for daily use, some say it breaks every other day

Mar 6, 2010

i have downloaded the RT3572 driver from railink and put it in my home folder executed the following then:

Code: bunzip2 2009_1222_RT3572_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.0.tar.bz2
Code: tar -xvf 2009_1222_RT3572_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.0.tar

no problems here I have modified the 2 files as instructed:

Quote:

4) add the device and vendor id "{USB_DEVICE(0x1737,0x0079)}" between the "#ifdef RT35xx" and "#endif // RT35xx //" in the file "common/rtusb_dev_id.c"

5) modify the "os/linux/config.mk" like I described in my previous message

no problems here: next step according to all instructions: sudo make and sudo make install, trips me up, i get "no targets specified and no makefile found" probably a basic mistake somewhere here, but my knowledge of the command line is zilch

Fedora :: Upgrade Left Shadow On KDE Desktop

Jan 31, 2011

I upgraded to F14 from F13, and when the process was complete, I noticed on my desktop, I have a strange drop shadow on the left-hand corner. As if it's shadowing an invisible window. You cannot interact with it, it's not "really" there.It is very annoying, and I can not figure out what it is, or what is causing it. I've checked all my plasma widgets and things like that, but it still persists.

Anyone run into this before or have any ideas?Here is a screenshot showing the shadow, I intentionally set my background to white, so you could see it best. But it shows up on top of any wallpaper. and you can clearly see it underneath translucent term windows/etc.

Fedora Installation :: F11 - System Config Display Will Not Run

Jun 29, 2009

I just updated from Fedora 8 to 10 to 11 today. When I run system-config-display I get the following message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-display/xconf.py", line 33, in <module>
import rhpxl.monitor
ImportError: No module named rhpxl.monitor

If I comment out that line, the next one fails, and so on. I installed a newer package, 1.1.3-2.fc11, because I thought maybe the installer didn't put it on and that behaves the same. Why this won't run? I would desperately like to use my widescreen monitor and I'm hoping that 11 will finally support my intel graphics correctly.
