General :: Useradd Command To Create Passwd / Shadow & Other Files Under Different Directory
May 19, 2011
I am bulding my own image based on 2.6.32 kernel, I wish to add a guest user:
In a script thats invoked by the makefile, I use 'useradd' command & this updates the shadow, passwd files under /etc on the host, is it possible to tell the command to create the shadow / password under some other folder on the host? may be /tmp?

I am a student studying computer science course.
Well, I am facing problem when doing lab questions.
I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".
Look at my screenshot at [url].

I am trying to write a remote access module. Is there any function in linux where I can give string (password entered by user) and compare it with the actual user password stored in /etc/shadow. Since the password is stored encrypted in /etc/shadow I cannot parse and compare. So I want some method to compare if my user entered the correct password..Is there any function for that..

I am trying to learn shell scripting from a book and all I am doing is following few instruction from the book. Now this is what I am doing. I am trying to add a user using the useradd command so I run the following at command prompt root@S8500C_9>useradd ajit. The first time when I add this user I was successful.Later I deleted this suer using the userdel -r ajit command. Now when again I am trying to add this user it gives me following error. useradd: group ajit exists - if you want to add this user to that group, use -g. Now when I try using the -g option with the useradd command it gives we all the set off options avaiable to use along with the useradd command but doesnt create the ajit use

when I try to add a user it fails to make the corresponding home directory. I can still su to the user, set the password, and everything else. the output is as follows:
$ useradd username
useradd: cannot create home directory /home/username
I read that this could be a result of there not being enough space but if I do df -h, i see that only 88% of the memory is being used.

I encountered a question in the Redhat Skills Assessment regarding useradd: Which of the following cannot be defined when you create a user account with useradd?
a* A password expiration date.
b* The user's primary group.
c* The user's default shell.
d* The user's NIS or LDAP group.
e* The user's home directory.
Which is the correct answer? I have my own thinking which will be explained later.

I'm quite new to linux but I have configured a simple ftp server and it's working great. I have a FTP-Shared folder with upload and download subfolders. Under upload's and download's I have identical category subfolders like mp3's, movies, software etc. in both. As the guy's upload, I would like to create a line crontab where I can move all the content under /FTP-Shared/upload/mp3/* older than 14 day's to FTP-Shared/downloads/mp3/ recursively (Like in cp command), but the timestamp must be searched on the first directory and not sub files example: /mp3/Club Dance/CD1/Hallo world.mp3This is how far I got:[root@clients ~]# /usr/bin/find /FTP_Shared/upload/Mp3s/ -depth -mindepth 1 -mtime +14 -type d -exec mv -f {} /FTP_Shared/download/Mp3s/ ;This command moves the directory and files, but it is not recursively

I am currently interning at a place and my job is to essentially learn UNIX. My supervisor gives me problems here and there to help guide me with my learning but for the most part I'm doing this all by self-teaching myself. Needless to say I have run into a few obstacles...for instance-Create a *one* line command that, using tar, will collect the full /usr/local directory (you need to run this as root again) and copy the whole /usr/local structure under /optFor example /usr/local/bin/hello will become /opt/local/bin/hello, etc. I want this as follows:1. /usr/local is collected by tar, but the output of this tar command is its stdout.. what you get from the previous stdout, you compress with gzip and send it to stdout again 3. get this output and decompress with gzip.. get this output and pipe to tar in a way that will extract the tree under /opt.If anyone knows how I could go about doing this, please let me know, or at the very least point me in the right direction. What I've got so far (which could be completely wrong) is:tar cvf - usr/local/ | gzip -c - | gunzip -c - | tar xvf -in theory I feel like this should work (except for extracting the tree under /opt...i'm kinda stuck there)

I have been working on Kerberos and Ldap Authentication on SUSE 11.3.
I was successful with Kerberos authentication and had no issue. then i moved to configure LDAP as i want to configure this authentication method for APACHE server.
Now after configuring ldap and pam, I am able to check the command 'getent shadow' with no issue and this command lists all the users of that OU too. but when i try getent passwd or getent group , it results nothing but local users.

we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -
