I want to make a webserver with multiple users allowed to login through SFTP to a specific folder, www.Multiple users are added, lets say user1 and user2, and all of them belonging to the www-data group. The www directory has an owner www-data and a group www-data.
I have used chmod -R 775 on the www folder, but after I try to create a folder test through my SFTP server (using Filezilla) the group of the directory created has only r and x permissions, and I am not able to log in with the second user user2 and create a directory within www/test due to a lack of w permission to the group.
I also tried using chmod 2775 on www directory, but without luck. Can somebody explain to me, how can I make it so that a newly created directory inherits the root directory group permissions?

On my Debian server I installed Samba for sharing directories in my local network. I know how to set access rights but I have a problem. I would like to allow an user (example "nobody") to create files or directories in a shared directory but to deny to modify or delete something. How can I do that?Second question, on a file, I know that we can set rights for "u", "g" and "o". But like the NTFS permissions, can we apply rights for each users?

We are looking to monitor and log selected application file systems for file create/modify/delete changes that will also include, user account that changed/deleted the file, file name and date and time of event. Everything I have looked at does not seem to provide all of the information that we need.Inotify seems to monitor modify/create/delete but does not seem to provide the user account. Auditd seems to monitor modify/create/append with user account, but not deletes. We need to provide this information to auditing for Sarbane Oxley compliance.

I've got a small issue that when a Windows user creates a new folder through Windows Explorer (from the menu or by right clicking) the new folder is only accessible to that particular user. Example: user SABKAR (member of the HR group) creates a new folder called MarcTestMenu in a shared Samba directory through Windows Explorer:
[Code]....
At this point user MORAMY cannot copy a file or open the directory MarcTestMenu. MORAMY gets a 'not accessible' error message in Windows. If I su to the Samba box and issue this command:
[Code]...
how I can get the correct default permissions when users create directories through Windows?

I have a few ubuntu servers which have samba shares on the network and for the most part have had little trouble with them. Recently we purchased a few iMac's for one of our deptartments and, while we're able to access the shares, all the files on them are read-only and we are unable to delete/modify files using the iMacs. This is not an issue with any of our windows machines (W2K, WinXP, Vista).

I have a site hosted with a cheap hosting company and limited control of the site. I need to allow some other users all over the world to have write access to files or complete directories and I have no idea how to do that. Initially I thought I could use "chown" somehow but it looks like it's a no-go with ftp and others. By default, there is a .htaccess file and a .htpasswd file in the root directory of the site and the hosting company suggested to use .htaccess file with something like below:
[Code]....
and put it in a .htaccess file in the directory of user1 but the server does not like something since I inserted that file. Is it an error in the script or is there more to it than that? Can someone point me to a suitable tutorial or explain what to do?

the permissions for my home directory were accidentally changed from 'access files' to 'create and delete files', and I changed them back, but ever since then I am not able to change any preferences/settings at all. power management, themes, panels, emerald, anything. my user account is supposed to be the administrator, and all the user privliges are checked. how to get control of my computer back?

I'd like to create a tar file on my machine to distribute software to other machines which are all alike (including, usernames, groupnames, etc). I need to create certain files and directories with specific owners on the target machine. In order to do that, I use
Code:
tar --create --owner=someone --group=somegroup --file package.tar files. However, for this to work, someone must be in my /etc/passwd and somegroup must be in my /etc/group. Is there a way to fake this so I don't have to create a bunch of users only for that purpose?

I installed proftpd on my Ubuntu 10.10 install. I also run multiple websites that I want to allow ftp access to for 2 different users. The websites are located in /home/www/. This is where the guide I was following told me to put them. I also don't have a user named www.How can I give write permission to upload, delete, and edit all the files in /home/www/ for multiple users? They can connect to the ftp server and see the file, just not change them.

I don't quite understand /etc/skel. I know that everything in /etc/skel will effect all NEW users, and that's about it.
Basically, what I'm trying to do is add the directories "home" and "work" to the users /home directory.
How do I do this?

i'm confronting atm. I need to create a folder where ppl can copy files and i need to be sure that those files cannot be deleted after they are copied there. The folder will be accessed over network, and i need to be sure no one will delete somebody else's files. Also i need to tell you that i'm working with regular users, so creating a folder for each user and chown/chmod-ing it won't do the trick(allready tried and ended up with a whole lot of files in the parent directory).I also tried chattr +a but that doesn't allow them to write new files in the folder.

I have a shell script that need to create some files:
1) backup files of user passed in file ( that will be written by this shell ).
2) temp files that the shell will create and later delete/remove.
This shell script will be used from my local dir ( I am not a super or a sysadmin ). Users of this shell will call this script to run on their local files in their respective directories. When my script runs, it errors with the following:
cp: cannot create regular file `./listfile.txt.backup': Permission denied
/home/myUser/tools/myShellScript: line 12: listfile.txt: Permission denied
for the temp I was able to avoid this error by creating the temp file in the /tmp directory. All I want is for this shell script to run, create/modify/backup files in user's local dirs.
The user dir has the following permission:
drwxr-xr-x testDir
the file that needs to be backed-up has:
-rw-r--r-- listfile.txt.
