Fedora Installation :: How To Remove Old Kmods Config

Feb 15, 2009

kmod-nvidia reflects 180.25 version but when I try 'service akmods restart' the check defaults to the original and installed 2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.x86_64' and will not recompile for the newer? All appropriate packages are installed. Running in level 3 as X server won't launch.

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Unneeded Config Files Automatically?

Jun 18, 2010

1) Whenever a new release of Ubuntu comes out, I've always done a full replacement (Booted up live CD, formatted / and formatted /home) to ensure there's zero incompatibilities, including configuration files in my /home. That has, finally, gotten annoying and I was wondering what the actual chances of a configuration file causing problems was in the 6 months that Ubuntu was released in. Also, special consideration for Gnome 3 (aka gnome-shell) coming out with the current gnome configs.

2)Any way to remove unneeded config files automatically? I don't always use purge when I remove a package just in case I want to reinstall it, well weeks later I def don't want it, is there an apt or dpkg command that will automatically remove them after the package is gone? I know autoclean and autoremove handle orphans and unneeded .deb's

3) How stable is Sidux in reality? Ran it in a VM and had a few errors every so often while using it, but i wasnt sure how much of that was the fact it was a VM. Some say its stable enough for daily use, some say it breaks every other day

Fedora Installation :: F11 - System Config Display Will Not Run

Jun 29, 2009

I just updated from Fedora 8 to 10 to 11 today. When I run system-config-display I get the following message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-display/xconf.py", line 33, in <module>
import rhpxl.monitor
ImportError: No module named rhpxl.monitor

If I comment out that line, the next one fails, and so on. I installed a newer package, 1.1.3-2.fc11, because I thought maybe the installer didn't put it on and that behaves the same. Why this won't run? I would desperately like to use my widescreen monitor and I'm hoping that 11 will finally support my intel graphics correctly.

Fedora Installation :: System-config-boot Does Nothing

Jan 7, 2011

After an upgrade (preupgrade) from Fedora 12 to 14, system-config-boot opens from the menu and displays the right information but does not change grub.conf. I have searched the forums and found nothing like this. It worked before the upgrade. I have forced a new install of system-config-boot. I can change grub.conf manually. There are no SElinux messages that I can find. It would be nice to get the gui working.

Fedora Installation :: Can't Install F14 | System-config-lvm Failure?

Jan 5, 2011

Been running Fedora for a while now, iterating up through versions to 12. Decided to to a clean install upgrade to 14. Apparently, bug mistake. Everything seems to be progressing fine, but after 'transferring install image to harddrive', the 'Starting Install Process' fails withsystem-config-lvm-1.1.15-1.fc14.narach.rpm cannot be opened.I have no idea what to do with this. I've reburned the install disk a couple of times (and checked the HASH) -- no apparent problems with the install media.Tech details: x86_64 install on a multi-pro box with a 3ware raid 5 controller (5 disk). I've never run LVMs. Two simple hard partitions (/ and /home). Fedora 12 installed with no problems (as did every other version of Fedora <=12).---------- Post added at 12:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:54 AM ----------Some additional information:1 tried Fedora 13 -- wouldn't even recognize my disks. Installer hung at trying to find basic storage. Not a good sign2 tried my old Fedora 12 install DVD -- again, worked like a charm. Expect that F12 repos are now closed.

So, it seems as if some 'change' between F12 and F13/14 has made some part of the install process choke on my 'hardware' (I'm guessing something related to 3ware RAID card). ---------- Post added at 01:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:29 PM ----------I just tried CentOS 5.5 (x86_64). Also installed fine. For some reason, Fedora >= 13 absolutely won't let me get past the problem noted in the OP. I suppose I could go with CentOS (for long EOL support), but I need some of the newer compiler/dev libs in Fedora 14 for some projects I'm working on.

Fedora Installation :: Make Menuconfig Options For LIRC Not In .config File Anywhere

Aug 25, 2009

When configuring a custom kernel using fedoraproject.org instructions, the make menuconfig options for LIRC are not in the .config file anywhere. I checked the kernel tree and all the files are there in the .../drivers/input/lirc subdirectory (I need the lirc_dev and lirc_i2c drivers). I reset the .config to its original settings to make sure I didn't mess up. I also grep'ed the .config file for any LIRC related settings, none found. Also I'm not getting any sound from the radio-aztech driver.

Fedora :: Remove The LVM After Installation?

Jun 13, 2011

I want to make the system a bare minimum, What is the best way to remove everything related to LVM? I know during installation I can do that, but what if I have already installed it? What I do not like the most about LVM is the extra rd_* parameters passed to kernel, being a desktop I do not see any benefit in the complexity it brings. I want to make it a minimum so I can use it in an embedded system, and am stripping out the most useless first. In addition, btrfs being the new default pretty soon I guess devs also realized the disadvantages of LVM outweigh the advantages.

Fedora Installation :: How To Remove Existing Lvm Without Reinitializing Hdd?

Nov 22, 2009

I have a dual-boot system with XP and Fedora. I had to reinstall XP a while ago. After XP reinstallation, to regain access to Fedora, I ran Fedora installation DVD. It told me that the hdd had a "loop file system" and that I had to reinitialize it. I chose "ignore", "upgrade" and then "Create new boot loader configuration". Everything works fine now, but when I tried to install F11 from a live cd I discovered that I couldn't. It can't edit the lvm part (nor delete it). The only things possible are to reintall F10 with the DVD that created the lvm in the first place or install F11 using preupgrade (the lvm remains ext3 so preupgrade can't edit it either).

My question is: how can I get rid of the lvm part without reinitializing the hdd (I don't want to lose the data on the other partitions). I want to reinstall Fedora but without lvm.I heard something about "fdisk" and "lvremove", but I have no idea how to use these, so I would like a detailed solution (something close to a tutorial).

Fedora Installation :: F10 - Remove Apache 2.2 Keeping Old 1.3 Version?

May 2, 2009

Been away for awhile (Fedora 5 or 6 was what I last ran). Just downloaded Fedora10 and installed it on a drive here, running great, looking slick. What drove me back to Fedora (Linux) is my need to create a simulated webserver to locally test stuff without messing up my live site. I had successfully installed php and mysql, using the specific versions my host uses. I then downloaded the RPM of the specific apache instal, followed the install directions and ran into a snag. Last step, says, "$ PREFIX/bin/apachectl start". I did that and received an error. Tried just typing apachectl start, and it worked. Upon my surprise it loaded Apache 2.2 (mine was a 1.3 release), and of course is Fedora-branded.

My questions are as follows:
Do I know somehow how two versions of Apache on? How do I start up the 1.3 one if so?
If not - How can I remove the 2.2, and what will have become of the 1.3 I installed?

I don't know which step of the upgrade I forgot, but it seems I'm stuck somewhere in between, although

Code:
