Fedora Networking :: NX On 10 - Shadow Session On Local Display?
Jan 3, 2009
Has anybody been able to get NX (Nomachine) running on Fedora 10 configured using a shadow session of the local desktop (X11-local). I am experiencing some kind or cookie creation error, perhaps privilege related?
FYI. Normal unix-kde sessions work fine (e.g. Giant on Box) and shadow sessions of an existing unix-kde session works fine too. A shadow session of the local display is a bust.
Here's the error log:
Code:
NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 4076
NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command
NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files
NX> 285 Setting the preferred NX options
[Code]....

I'm running nxfree to log into my remote xubuntu PC from my local xubuntu laptop since the X protocol was broken.Has been working fine. Recently upgraded from Lucid 32bit to Maverick 64bit Xubuntu. Now when I run nxclient in fullscreen mode, if I minimize the window (or just log out) my local display does not return.I'm left with just the background colour. The windows are still there but not visible. For example I can:* randomly right-click and a menu pertaining to the invisible window appears;* press alt-tab and cycle through the windows but activating one does not display it (it remains invisible);* press ALT-F and bring up the current active (but invisible) application file menu;Basically I press ALT-F and ALT-TAB and close everything and then log out and log back in to restore the windows/panels.

Does anyone know how to do a 'shadow' session with freenx client, qtNX?I don't see any options in that particular client to 'attach' or 'shadow' a current X11 session. Does anyone have a slackbuild for nomachines NX client?

I have a slack 64 13.1 box, that I want to be able to control the monitor of from my laptop. Here's the scenario: I can already control the music remotely via X forwarding banshee to my laptop (banshee shows up on the laptop and music comes out on the desktop). Now I want to be able to open a movie on the desktop's display via the laptop.
Now googling this comes up with solutions for X forwarding, but I don't want it to forward X I want it to display on the desktop.

I have my local computer, and server.
I log into server, and mount my local computer (folder) via sshfs.
Create .rar backup archive direct to sshfs remote folder.
After copy, close my ssh sessions.
And use my streamer to backup files stored by server.
I'm wondering, is there any way to share streamer /dev/st0 via ssh session ?
how can i start backup direct to (remote) -> root@server/dev/st0

In the past, when I open a gvim session on a remote machine, the title bar of gvim would show the machine name in brackets. I am not sure if this was done by the remote gvim itself, or the local window manager. In the past I have used gnome2, although I am currently using unity (and finding it rather frustrating). Is there some setting I can change to always force remote windows to display the source machine?

At work, we have a linux machine which is shared among the members of my team. Each of us runs an XServer on our desktop, which allows us to launch XClients (xterm, debuggers, etc) on the linux machine. We all are using X11 forwarding feature with SSH. I personally run all shell sessions behind screen because I like to be able to detach if needed. We've seen issues when the $DISPLAY variable gets crossed between different users. Let me outline a series of events:
1. user1 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:10.0
2. user1 launches a screen
3. user1 loses connection to linux machine (eg. desktop reboot)
4. user2 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:10.0
5. user1 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:11.0
6. user1 resumes screen from previous login, but in this screen $DISPLAY=localhost:10.0.
7. user1's X apps get displayed on user2's desktop!
I assume someone must of encountered this before. Are there any known solutions? Is there a way to configure screen, so that when a session is resumed it inherits the $DISPLAY?

I'm using wmctrl on an Ubuntu machine to manage windows from a script, that I run inside a (gnu) screen.
If I start the screen session from the local machine, wmctrl works fine, including if I completely close the terminal window and issue the wmctrl commands when connecting to the screen remotely via ssh.
Conversely, if I connect remotely with ssh and start a screen, wmctrl doesn't work (returns "Cannot open display") even if I attach that screen session locally from the Ubuntu Terminal.
I guess there is some hidden screen parameter that doesn't get set in a way that allows accessing the display when it's launched remotely -- any ideas what it is and how to modify it from within a remote ssh-screen session so that that the script can access the windows?

my local box is centos 5.5 running gnome.
I have a eucalyptus instance (vm) running an older version of centos (5.3?). As a vm it has no graphical display. I'd like to run a graphical app there so that it displays back on my local machine.
Used xhost locally and it shows the remote IP (eucalyptus instance) as enabled. On the remote side (eucalyptus instance) I set DISPLAY with:
export DISPLAY xx.xx.xx.xx:0.0
where xx.xx.xx.xx is my local ip address. Oh, I did install X in the vm instance (yum groupinstall "X Window System"). X is installed but not running there (does the point of origin of the x app need to have X running as well - and what does this mean in a vm which is a non-graphicla environment?).
Anyway, I try to run (from remote to local) xclock and get the typical
Error: Can't open display.

I upgraded to F14 from F13, and when the process was complete, I noticed on my desktop, I have a strange drop shadow on the left-hand corner. As if it's shadowing an invisible window. You cannot interact with it, it's not "really" there. It is very annoying, and I can not figure out what it is, or what is causing it. I've checked all my plasma widgets and things like that, but it still persists.
Anyone run into this before or have any ideas? Here is a screenshot showing the shadow, I intentionally set my background to white, so you could see it best. But it shows up on top of any wallpaper. and you can clearly see it underneath translucent term windows/etc.

I'd like a way to see all of the devices on my local network and what their local IP address is. I recall that I used wireshark to troubleshoot a similar problem a while back, but it doesn't seem to have a way to see all of the devices- only the traffic. (I'd like to do this without having to physically interface with my router if possible, and I am in an encrypted network if that matters)

I have installed a web server on my local network. Everything is well configured and web pages are shown correctly from Internet (outside the local network) using the domain or the public IP.The issue is if I try to see that web pages (using the domain or the public IP) from inside the local network. In that case the router config page (192.168.1.1) is shown instead of the web pages. From inside the local network I'm only able to see the web pages using the internal IP address (192.168.1.XX).

This is weird, today I updated my system and while trying to visudo from single user mode got
"cannot read /etc/shadow: Permission denied"
which kept me from doing anything until I switched to file permissions of 400 on shadow, then back. Is this being experienced by anyone else or just me? /etc/security/limits.conf doesn't seem like it wants to change in enforcing mode either and I can't find any alerts to provide clues on the situation.

I'm trying to setup ssh access on my Fedora 12 laptop. I get the following error message in /var/log/secure when I try to login from another machine using ssh and the login is denied:
Code:
sshd[3025]: error: Could not get shadow information for <user>
sshd[3025]: Failed password for <user> from <ip> port <port> ssh2
If I do a 'setenforce 0' I can login and no error is logged.

I've got an Ubuntu server hosting our websites and other various things here in our own home. We recently switched to a router that doesn't support loopback (abomination), so I've set up hosts files on our computers so we can access our own sites when on our home LAN.
However, we often take our laptops as we travel about, and I'm guessing due to the hosts files when we try to access our sites, it'll look on whatever local network we're connected to for our server, which won't work, obviously.
Is there a way to set up something like a hosts file that'll only try to look up the local IP of the server when we're on a specific network (our home one), or have one that tries to look for the local IP first, then proceeds to try and resolve the domain name and use the external IP if the local IP doesn't work?

I run opensuse 11.3/KDE:Factory. Recently, kmail updated to using akonadi. The following problem came up. My local emails are now managed by a "local folders" component of akonadi. The folder structure is displayed correctly in Kmail. However, no emails are shown for some folders. Emails still live in the .kde4/share/app/kmail directory hierarchy and can be imported into a new folder after moving them somewhere else. However, even after a fresh import sometimes emails are no longer recognized.
