I Dont have nvidia i have ati so needless to say i have to gui when i boot up
It shows the fedora loading bubble then a blinking cursor.
I can get to a virtual terminal.
So how do i undo what i did I just want to get it back to normal i dont need 3d support.
How do I check what video driver I have installed in the terminal? Then how do I install or yum install it? I wanna do everything through command line soz.. I have an ATI 4850 I believe.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI accidentally installed ATI graphics drivers on an intel graphics system. They didn't appear to install properly, because upon next boot everything was fine, except for compiz and any 3d game.
compiz-check says that I've managed to get intel back as default, but I'm still missing a rendering method.
Does anyone know how to get the renderer back? I assume it has something to do with changing the kernel? I don't know how to change the kernel anyway.
How is OpenGL support (specifically OpenGL 3.x) in the different video card drivers available for Linux?Assuming that the hardware supported it well, would the drivers be an issue?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOk.. when it comes to drivers and kernels...I have a rented server - so I do not have local access to it, and I do not have a KVM or remote console to it.
This is the current kernel that came with it:
Linux version 2.6.26-2-686 (Debian 2.6.26-22lenny1) (dannf@debian.org) (gcc version 4.1.3 20080704 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.2-25)) #1 SMP Wed May 12 21:56:10 UTC 2010 the network card module according to support is r8169 (when i do lsmod i see r8169 listed), lspci lists it as: Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03).
So.. where everything went bad is after I installed grsecurity kernel via apt-get install linux-image-grsec. It installed and rebooted successfully, but without the right network card module. The datacentre support had to reboot it to the original kernel for me.
So - i don't know how to update the network card drivers of the grsecurity kernel? It has to be perfect (I can't do trial and error) because each attempt that fails, I have to engage the datacentre support to reboot the system back into the original kernel. Apparently the new kernel detected it as a gigabit fibre card.
I installed the video drivers for my ATi 3870 and I found out the hard way it was the wrong driver, so now upon booting I can only get as far as an Ubuntu screen with some text and then my computer will restart once it reaches that point. It'll keep doing this until I turn it off, and I can't seem to get to a point in which I can get any control over it. I made a live CD but it has the same effect.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm a Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) user.Everytime I start Ubuntu up, before the login screen, I get a message that there's something wrong with the graphics or videocard, telling me that I'd have to run Ubuntu in low-resolution. Okay, fine, log-in screen, I log in. The wallpaper loads. That's all that loads. No panels at all, no desktop icons, nothing. Alt + F2 doesn't work and I strongly fear that I'd have to reinstall Ubuntu, and that's a great loss to all my files. I currently can't afford external memory and I don't have external memory in possession.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed newest Ubuntu system, 11.04, Natty-Narwhal, and PC is running smoothly. It is solid machine, Celeron 430, 1 gb of DDR2 memory and I have both LAN card and graphics integrated on the mobo which is MSI 7529, based on G31/P35/P31 chipset.
I plugged lan cable directly from my PC to the ADSL router. There is another Win Xp machine on the same router and it has connection, and internet is working fine. Right now Im writing from the Win 7 laptop, which is connected to the same router via wifi link... all working like a charm...
But, when I plug the Ubuntu desk I cannot get access to bot lan and internet...
I searched the net and it seems that ubuntu didnt install proper driver during the OS installation. Here are some diagnostics of the current config and state:

I have a laptop with 2 graphic cards on it, currently I have the nvidia drivers installed, and I want to install the Intel ones, but when I try to install I am prompted to remove the nvidia ones.
I have a module to turn off the nvidia card, but I still need to get the drivers for the intel card install, how to do it?
First off I cant seem to get any drivers installed for my GFX card, I've got an ATI Radeon X1300 and when I go to System > Admin > Hardware drivers it seems to find nothing. I'm pretty sure thats whats causing my next problem; Lag with games. I installed one of my favorite games, Blockland and ran it with Wine, First thing right off the bat is its lagging like hell. But, an even worse problem is happening. It doesn't even seem to start up now...
Alright, now let's go to java. One of my other favorite games, Minecraft, A game made with java, doesn't seem to work. I can play it for about 10 - 20 seconds until the game just turns white. There's also Dwarf Fortress, and it seems that I cant even get the linux version running. I looked at the requirements and got some of them, but not all and when I try to run it nothing even happens.
Lastly, Steam. So far steam is working fine, except when I try and install a game off of it, Steam just immediately closes... So, If you need my specs or anything just ask. I'd relaly like to fix some of these things so I use Ubuntu over windows, because I just love the feel more than windows.

I was messing around with Ubuntu trying to make somethings work. Then i rebooted ,and I wasn't able to turn on Visual Effects. So I'm guessing that I must have replaced my video card driver with a non-compatible one or just removed it without knowing. So I was wondering "How Can I Switch Back To The Video Card Driver Ubuntu Came With?" Without reinstalling Ubuntu? Since I was able to at least switch on Visual Effects with it.

I just installed a nvidia TNT2 m64 video card on my AMD 2500+ Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on Gnome 2.30.2. (yeah, it's old). I'm trying to install the proper driver, but system>admin>Hardware drivers says there are no proprietary drivers enabled. nVidia synaptic packages installed (settings; common; modaliases 96, 173, current; xorg video). I used to have the same, or nearly the same card working great before some a**hole stole it. How to configure?

Well I've been trying to get drivers installed for this card for a few days now and I can't get anything to work. The proprietary drivers for this card don't support the xorg version installed in F14. I've tried mesa and ati drivers but I can't get them to actually work, they both just cause x to crash during startup. I've looked through the threads for ati drivers but they all seem to talk about using the latest catalyst drivers and thus non of them have helped me much.

I have been noticing that it was hard to set up my own NVidia video card, and alot of other people shared the same problem as I had. I have been experimenting with some things, and here's what I did to solve it.
It's fairly easy, anyone can do this. Read and follow these instructions:
Install all updates. Although it seems unimportant, it really is.
Go to [url] and follow the instructions to install the free and nonfree repositories
Go to System > Administration > Add/Remove Software
Search the following: nv
Click everything which has to do with NVidia. Do not check the checkboxes yet, but read the descriptions. If you've found your video card in the description, check the checkbox at the left of the title.
Install the drivers by clicking "Apply" at the bottom of your screen.
After installing, go to Applications > System Tools > nVidia Display Settings
Set the properties of your video card, such as TwinView or higher screen resolutions.
After you've set it up, click Apply to preview your settings. Change some settings if you like, and then click Apply when you're done. DO NOT EXIT YET!
Click "Save to X Confguration File, but do NOT save the file. Click "Show preview..." and copy the text in the preview.
Go to Applications > System Tools > Terminal and type "su". Press Enter and enter the root password.
Now type:

Select all of the text in the document and delete it. Then, paste the text of the "Save X Configuration" window into the text editor.
Exit out of the terminal.

So after I installed the ATI Radeon 3400 series video card in my machine, the Xserver cant start! after it loads, it takes me to the init 3. When I tried startx, the screens either go blank or doesnt let me.

I wanted dual monitors but now I cant even get one. The xwindows doesnt appear.
Things I tried:
1. Deleted the xorg.conf and reconfigured (didnt work).
2. sax2 -r -m 0=versa (didnt work)
3. reconfigured the ATI radeon driver from init 3 (didnt work)
4. copy and paste the oold version of xorg.conf (didnt work)
5. tried to run set apt or dpkg-reconfigure command (commands not found)
6. tried xconfig and prompt the best I coudl (didnt work).
7. aticonfig commands (As shown in website) (also didnt work)
I have the live CD to run it from there but I dont know what to do once I get to the terminal.
Is there any way I can revert to previous configuration since the ATI driver gives me some problems? Like a restore function in windows?
How or what files I should change for the X-server to run properly (is there any other file than xorg.conf?....)
The monitors I have:

1398 Dell Monitor (I wan to get the dual exntended monitor but it seems to gave me only the mirror image, thats why I tried to reconfigure the video card)

Completely new to Ubuntu, basically never used anything but Windows before, hadn't even had a chance to properly test out Ubuntu before I broke it. So, sorry if this question is very easy...or if I'm posting it in the wrong place...
Anyway, I cleverly installed the most recent drivers for my graphics card, and it killed Ubuntu - it won't start now. This happens on Windows, too, but Windows will System Restore for me. How might I fix this in Ubuntu?
I can choose Ubuntu from the grub menu, but then the screen goes blank, the fan on my computer goes into overdrive, and nothing happens.
Am currently running my Karmic Koala from LiveCD...
If I try and install, any distro on a ide External hard drive, Will I still get a Bootup Grub installed on my internal Windows MBR. I am thinking the answer is yes.

This is the problem I run lspci -v which checks all drivers on my system and more. It says kernel driver in use is nouveau. Then under that it says kernel modules: nvidia recent, nvidia-96, nouveau, nvidiafb. So what it looks like I have 3-4 drivers for my video card loaded and one, nouveau, being used. I think they conflict with each other.
I'm trying to add drivers other then nouveau, because the mouse freezes with it. At this point I can't seem to get rid of nouveau, I go to terminal and type:
sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
And it says that it's not loaded so I can't dump it. lspci-v says nouveau is the driver being used and trying to dump it. It says it isn't installed. I'm confused. I want to dump nouveau, what should I do? I also go into Synaptic package manager and it isn't listed as being installed.
I've loaded Fedora and must say what a nice OS! But I'm having some issues getting the video working correctly so let me jump right into the issue. The video is very garbled and hard to read. can't seem to find a way to correct what would appear to be a driver issue. Here are a list of things tried:
- display works fine with Ubuntu
- display is clear but is chopped off when using an external monitor from onboard vga slot
The video card is an ATI radeon and the linux drivers from the ATI site don't work with the new images that are out yet.
The installer has left me with 1,024 by 768 pixels and a driver that will not reach anything like the res my card and monitor will cope with. The display is currently blanking every 30secs or so for a very brief interval as well.
I may have missed something on the install but there didn't seem to be any opertunity to choose either a driver or monitor type. I was eating my dinner through most of it.
I had a brief flirtation with Mandriva and know that linux should be able to nearly fully support my monitor which is 1680x1050 by Belinea. Earlier open suse install gave the option of seting this sort of thing up and listed all of Berlinea's monitors as well.
The card is an nvidia 210 by Asus. Reported as a 200. I do not want to try installing an nvidia driver yet as I understand that there will be problems. Also I have a YAST ipv6 dns problem = no updates.
After having a lot of trouble with vista and no chance of getting Windows 7 anytime soon, I decided to get Ubuntu and use dual booting with vista. I had recently installed it about two days ago and for the most part it worked pretty well. That is until I installed the driver for my video card, an ATI Radeon HD2600 pro, then things went down hill for me. Every time I try and boot Ubuntu it now goes to a black screen after the logo comes up and i am unable to do anything. I have tried to look up some solutions, but I am still relatively new to programing and some of this stuff seems a bit complicated for me. Is there a simple solution to this that does not require a reinstall?

It tells me Desktop effects can't be enabled. Sudo jockey-gtk looks and tells me no proprietary drivers are in use by my system. I've tried installing from Nvidia's site and that seems to go okay but doesn't seem to work. I reinstalled my computer with Ubuntu 10.10 and the resolution was fine. I turned off my computer last night and when I turned it on today it's back to everything being huge and the screen resolution being 640 x 480. Then when I try to change it, it says my video card isn't supported. All I want to do is revert back to my stock video card in my computer and remove the nvidia one since obviously ubuntu isn't working with it.

I dont know what it is but i want to enable extra visual effects. unfortunally a message stating "searching for drivers" appears, eventuall folowed by " Visual Effects can not be enabled" i think this is due to the drivers obviosly.
