Fedora Installation :: GNOME 3 Support For Intel Graphics Chips And Nomodest
May 27, 2011
[A word of explanation: initially the post below followed a post by Adam Williamson in another thread devoted to inability to load GNOME 3 in VM; this is why I address Adam in the opening.]
Adam, the situation with the GNOME 3 support for Intel integrated graphics seems to be a little confusing. You are probably among the most competent to clarify it.
Let me tell my own story first.
I was installing earlier today Fedora 15 on an HP dm4-1160US laptop with i5 and Intel graphics, and the anaconda installer hung right after "Waiting for hardware to initialize..." flashed on the screen, before even Media Check screen was reached. I tried a few times, always with the sae result: anaconda hung. Then I decided to add nomodeset to the boot parameters and the anaconda installer went on and I was able to complete the installation without a slightest problem.
I rebooted and without a problem reached the GDM login screen. When logging into GNOME, a pop-up window informed me that the system was unable to load GNOME and that instead I would be logged into the fall back mode. By the way, I haven't experienced the problems that plagued "Classic GNOME" on another laptop of mine where instead of clean install I preupgraded from Fedora 14 (strictly following the guidelines for preupgrading).
Wireless card was recognized and wlan initialized, nearby wireless networks seen, yet I wasn't able to connect to my own wireless network (I tried to do this already in the process of installation, equally unsuccessfully).
I was able to connect via Ethernet cable, and then I proceeded to perform yum update.
The update brought a new kernel. I went into grub.conf and noticed that nomodeset has been automatically added to the boot parameters for each of the two kernels. I decided to perform an experiment: I removed nomodeset from the boot options for the new kernel, and left it in place for the anaconda installed kernel.
I rebooted into the new kernel. Right after the grub menu disappeared, the screen turned pitch black and stayed this way for good 10 seconds. I thought that the former situation repeats itself making impossible to boot without the nomodeset option. Suddenly, the screen lit up and the GDM login screen appeared.
I logged into a shiny GNOME 3 where I am writing these words right now. Ah, and I was also able to connect to the wireless (I made yet another attempt using the network manager applet -- this time it worked).
What does that seem to indicate? That GNOME 3 support is already available for Intel graphics chips? But one may need to play with the nomodeset cheatcode, as I described this above?

I cannot install FC11 or FC10 on my Dell XPS One/A2420 machine. Every time I tried to install the Linux operating system, the screen goes black and the computer goes no response. It seems to have something to do with the video card--Intel GMA X4500HD Graphics.

i previously posted a thread http:[URL].. that was regarding gaming issue, but now i got a bigger issue. i installed Intel 2010Q2 graphics package from [URL].. i first upgraded xorg-x11-server and related packages and installed devel package using yum.. later i compiled and installed kernel 2.6.34 and other packages included on [URL].. i rebooted the system and it showed display driver unknown so, i used system-config-display --reconfig and it detects my mobile 4 intel chipset. and when i reboot, GUI won't load .. when services finish loading screen goes blank and harddisk light blinks at constant intervals and i can't switch from GUI to CUI either using CTRL + ALT + F2 etc [URL].. PS i am able to login into single user and change xorg.conf

Purchased a slightly used T61 Thinkpad via a client of ours at work last week. I've been really happy with it so far, dumped 4GB RAM in it and have Vmware workstation running on it and all is well except the graphics drivers.
According to LSPCI the machine contains the device listed below.
Code:
X displays just fine and compiz works out of the box, but I'm only getting around 59 FPS with GLXgears. I do like to play the occasional game and what not, so i'm really hoping to get this increased. I've heard of running Tremulous on this card, so I imagine it can do it.
Is this low for this card?

! I'm thinking of buying a corei5-660 on a motherboard with an Intel H55 Express Chipset. Does anyone know if it's fully compatible with OpenSUSE 11.3? I mean video (that comes from the processor, not an off-board PCI), audio (HD Audio), networking (Intel 82578DC Gigabit), SATA Controller, USB, etc. I've tried to google but didn't find much info so I wonder if anyone is using or knows where I can find more info about it...
I have found this thread on the forums about the H55 chipset: Core i3 Intel Clarkdale graphic controller problem But the problems were facing on 11.2, I don't know about 11.3...

I've installed Suse linux 11.3 (kernel 2.6.34.7-0.5) on my brand new computer HP all in one 5130. Everything worked incredibly well : Wifi, wireless keyboard and mouse, sound, webcam.. There is only one remaining issue : I get a very poor resolution (1280x1024) instead of the 1920x1080 allowed by the screen. The graphic card is an intel chipset (HD graphics) integrated to an intel core i3 CPU. Here is (part of) the X11.org log :

This is a nettop with standard Intel graphics - no NVidia chipset (inc Ion).
This machine has been upgraded through various versions so I suspect there may be an old file somewhere which is causing this.

I have Fedora 11. After my most recent update, I can't log in. Every time I authenticate, the logon window disappears, the screen goes black briefly, and then I am back at the log in window I entirely reinstalled, and then it worked, until I updated to the newest kernel then it didn't work anymore. Update: I now generated a xorg.conf with system-config-display --noui I manually removed and reinstalled xorg-x11-drv-intel with yum. It didn't work. By the way: now the start hangs on "Starting atd: OK" If I specify "vesa" in xorg.conf, then it gets past the point, but display doesn't load properly.

I have an HP pavilion laptop with core i5 4210U that has intel HD4400 graphics. I installed debian wheezy 7.7 after shrinking win 8 and freeing 350GB for debian. I went through the hurdle of making a UEFI bootable USB drive and the system dual boots fine. But once I boot debian, I get all the run time messages and then login prompt flashes and the whole screen is blank except for a prompt on top left. I can open a terminal but that's about it. I'm unable to remotely login (connection refused) from either windows using moba terminal or another debian machine.
I searched the internet and found : [URL] ....
I tried the apt-get but it failed saying:
Code: Select allE: The value "wheezy-backports" is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
In case I have to install Debian testing version that some said worked, how do I get rid of my current installation, which is UEFI? Do I just erase its partitions in windows? Then what happens to its UEFI boot manager? Just leave it there to rot? If I install again with debian testing version, I envision some problems of the grub UEFI boot manager thinking that the debian 7.7 is still there and try to boot to it. I do have the partition images in partition manager home version 12 so I could just restore the UEFI partition.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on an Lenovo G560 laptop with Intel P6100. Everything seems to work fine except for the graphics. The screen goes blank when I enter startx from the console.
lspci shows the following for the graphics card : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) In xorg.conf, I've tried drivers 'vesa' which gave me low resolution, and also 'intel' which blanked the screen again. How do I configure this graphics card ? Has anyone else faced similar issues when installing Ubuntu on this graphics card?

I want to downgrade my Intel driver to version 2.11.0. I don't know what version I have at the moment but I have installed Fedora 15 (Lovelock). The reason is that Office 2007 has graphical bugs with Intel drivers that are newer than 2.11. So, will my gnome shell work fine after the downgrade and how to downgrade? I have searched a lot from google but didn't find any solutions.

is there some wiki page on GNOME or Fedora that list which graphics cards work without problems on Fedora 15 with GNOME Shell? I have tried 3 older cards and they all failed, so I would like to share this info with others so people know which cards to avoid if they want to use full features of GNOME 3 via GNOME Shell.

I'm unable to use 3d accelerated graphics in the desktop effects. I'm getting the infamous 'Desktop Effects require hardware 3d support' error. My GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 5670, and I've already tried the proprietary driver from ATI. It hung my system and gave me loads of issues, and to be frank, the ATI driver has NEVER worked for me. I'm using 32-bit Fedora 14, but if I remember correctly the 64 bit version of Fedora 14 did let me do this without an installer.

I have just reinstalled testing on a Samsung Q30 and I cant get X to start. I am just left with a blank screen and ctrl+alt+Fn does nothing. I had a previous install of testing that worked fine but it might have been running a previous version of the kernel, or I had installed a bug fix to do with 915resoultion that I can't remember about. Booting off a Slax live cd works fine but I have had similar problems with Knoppix and Ubuntu.
I am running LXDE but I previously tried Gnome and had the same problem. Running xander displays cant open display Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg returns nothing, as does Xfree86 -configure There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf or installed by default, I have tried running startx with a custom xorg.conf and the automatically generated one from -configure. The automatic one did not include any resolutions and was configured for a dual head set up although there was only one monitor connected.
I thought it may be the same problem as this:[url]
But I have tried following the bug fixes on that site and I have had no luck.

So Ubuntu had been working great in Lucid, and when I upgraded to Maverick the support for my graphics card stopped. It has the proper driver ("ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver") active and fglrx, fglrx-amdccle and fglrx-modaliases are all at 2:8.780-0ubuntu2. I also have the xorg radeon package installed. Yet, whenever I try to enable desktop effects (to get compiz to work) it says that Desktop effects could not be enabled.
