May 30, 2011I am using a Dell Latitude E6510 with QM57/QS57 Intel GMA HD chipset video card, when I am installing the Fedora 14, if I choose the 'Install the new system or update an existing system', it goes to blank screen.if I choose the 'Install system with basic video driver', it starts to install.BUT I cannot use the desktop effects, the Stellarium, etc, it says that 'accelerated 3D graphics is not available'. Even I have updated my kernel to 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686. As far as I know, QM57 do support a 3D graphics, what should I do to drive it to work.

Jan 15, 2010i just installed this operating system because i've been trying all the linux distrobutions and i've used ubuntu and am used to it, so far i like this operating system i just dont know much about it yet. Here is the problem so far at first i wasnt able to get online then i some how got it to work by using yast. now i'm trying to enable the desktop effects but at first it said that my graphics didnt support it, i have a nvidia geforce 9400gt PCI-E 512MB video card, it works with ubuntu desktop effects with no problem. i noticed that it didnt ask me like in ubuntu something about the drivers not being open source and what not.
so i looked at the hardware information and it said the drivers weren't active so i went to the the nvidia site, downloaded the drivers but they wouldnt install so i found a website that said something about one click install, that wouldn't work. so i found on this forum from someone that i needed to add nvidia in the respetories, so i did, it installed the nvidia software and drivers, the video card is show and now in the hardware it shows the drivers as active. but when i activate desktop effects it asks the yes or no question then flashes after i click yes, the graphics work for one second if that, and then the bar and windows disapear and it goes white, i can still see the mouse then goes back the desktop and acts as if its enabled still but no transparent windows or wobbly windows, so i click close open it and its disabled, and its just a loop everytime i try and enable it, not sure how to post a pic but i took a screen shot of my graphics hardware.

Oct 17, 2010I am fairly new to Ubuntu, so I'm sorry if I don't include any necessary information. Installed 10.10 rc from CD about 3 days prior to official release and everything was working fine... went about installing software and setting up laptop for use. About one week later, got prompted for upgrade and went ahead through update manager. Now can't enable desktop effects. Right after upgrade had a period where title bars of windows would not display... menus were present, but no title bars, no maximize/minimize/close buttons and no dragging windows to new locations on screen That has since resolved itself. Spent quite awhile searching forums, created xorg.conf at one point, later deleted it.

Apr 8, 2011I have Ubuntu Natty installed on my computer, and I cannot activate the desktop effects and animations. I know that they can be activated, as I used them on Gutsy, but they have somehow been disabled during an update. I want to reactivate them, but every time I try I am told that they cannot be activated because the right graphic card drivers are missing. I have an integrated Intel card on my computer. Is there any way I can reactivate the visual effects? If not, how was I able to activate them in Gutsy?

So far I have installed both the kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia packages, and I still cannot enable desktop effects. After i installed the akmod package, I sometimes see the nvidia logo for a split second when I log out, but my drivers are still not correctly installed.

Now I can enable compiz if I switch to ATI from my bios settings and install the drivers but I don't want to use it due to high power consumption and I've removed the ATI drivers.

May 1, 2011Just put 11.4, 32 bit on a system with an Intel D865 GLC motherboard and 865G built in graphics controller. While the install went OK it turns out that X is totally hosed. After fighting with things for a while and discovering that Sax2 had disappeared I poked at Google and discovered some other poor folks that have had similar issues with Intel video cards. Based on a suggestion for a doc in OpenSuse.org I edited the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf
and added the line: Driver "intel" to it - after that things got better. Obviously the install process had not identified the video card correctly. I'm now left with another issue - while the system now identifies the driver and can talk to the monitor correctly, a Samsung S23A350H I can't open a window after X comes up and I login - basically the same issue as the unresolved Bug 673873: [Bug 673873] intel [865G] Windows flash rapidly or don't appear if Desktop Effects are on in KDE and GNOME
The workaround is to turn Desktop Effects off but since X doesn't work I can't figure out how to do that. I can't find the gnome-xgl-switch or a xgl-switch that used to exist to do it on the command line so that's out. Someone said you could drop the empty file "disable-compiz" in the ~/.config/compiz directory and that would do it but in 11.4 that directory doesn't exist. how to disable "Desktop Effects"/XGL/compiz or whatever it is now called on the command line in OpenSuse 11.4 without a gui if that is still possible?

Apr 18, 2011Trying to make sense of this Linux stuff, by trying to install Fedora 14. First impressions are it?s a parallel universe populated by those who hark back to the era of Windows 3.1 / DOS, and earlier, where command line instructions and messing around with .ini files was all the rage. Which might all be a great little hobby to go back to, being more 'at one, and intimate' with my machine and learning a new skill to take some pride in, but all it means so far is my patience is being really tested by needing to learn it all from scratch!
The installation guides seem to suggest that if your graphics card is not good enough then the installation will default to the text based one. Which is what happened in my case. I can get to the login prompt after the installation, but that's the point where it gets really frustrating in having my machine think it?s a mid 1980s Commodore 64 or something!! Never mind PEEK and POKE, I just want to THUMP or KICK it.
I read somewhere I should start X Start to start the GUI. Nope, x start or xstart doesn't do anything. I then read that only works if I had installed X Windows. Can't find where or how I install X Windows though! I then read, as I say, things default to purely text if your graphics card is not good enough, but then I can't find anything about what the minimum spec is. Seems odd that a card that can cope with Windows can't work with a system as basic as linux/fedora with its frustrating command line-intensive way of working.

Jan 28, 2011I'm unable to use 3d accelerated graphics in the desktop effects. I'm getting the infamous 'Desktop Effects require hardware 3d support' error. My GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 5670, and I've already tried the proprietary driver from ATI. It hung my system and gave me loads of issues, and to be frank, the ATI driver has NEVER worked for me. I'm using 32-bit Fedora 14, but if I remember correctly the 64 bit version of Fedora 14 did let me do this without an installer.

May 30, 2010I attempted to install the mesa-dri-drivers-experimental package and my screen became unusable when I enabled desktop effects. I then uninstalled mesa-dri-drivers-experimental and tried to install the akmod before realizing that my card isn't supported yet. Now I can't seem to do anyting to get my screen back. I removed the blacklist on nouveau, but my screen still goes black after fedora boots. Is there any way I can just get things back to default without reinstalling the whole system?

Oct 26, 2010I used the rpmfusion nvidia drivers for my Fedora installation up until a day ago when all of sudden my display turned black after an update. Also, I am using a sony laptop with Nvidia GT230M (with proprietary drivers there are some huge problems like not detecting display, i had to use custom edid file to get it working).After fresh install, things just worked and everything is fine. But the only problem is it is not letting me enable Desktop Effects. I am very much used to Scale to switch my windows and I am kinda missing that functionality. Debian Installation :: X Server Crashes On New Install On Intel I855 Graphics Card
Sep 13, 2010I have just reinstalled testing on a Samsung Q30 and I cant get X to start. I am just left with a blank screen and ctrl+alt+Fn does nothing. I had a previous install of testing that worked fine but it might have been running a previous version of the kernel, or I had installed a bug fix to do with 915resoultion that I can't remember about. Booting off a Slax live cd works fine but I have had similar problems with Knoppix and Ubuntu.
I am running LXDE but I previously tried Gnome and had the same problem. Running xander displays cant open display Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg returns nothing, as does Xfree86 -configure There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf or installed by default, I have tried running startx with a custom xorg.conf and the automatically generated one from -configure. The automatic one did not include any resolutions and was configured for a dual head set up although there was only one monitor connected.
I thought it may be the same problem as this:[url]
But I have tried following the bug fixes on that site and I have had no luck.

Apr 18, 2010I'm a Fedora 12 user on an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop. I'm currently using kernel 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64, graphics driver xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.9.1-1.fc12.x86_64, and mesa 7.7-4. My graphics card is an Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07).
I've been having some problems getting my 3D acceleration to work. Although it worked correctly in Fedora 11, I have not been able to get it to work yet in Fedora 12.
