Fedora Installation :: Device Driver To Load ?
Jan 22, 2009
I am totally new to Linux and have a PC here with 128 MB Ram and a 10 GB HDD. It has Windows Millenium installed but I presume this will be wiped during the install process if I so wish.,
I am part way through the install using CD's and have just chosen my required alnguage and then keyboard layout. The next option is asking me to choose what device drivers to load and most appear to be HDD Drivers. I haven't a clue what to choose here?

I downloaded the full install of Fedora 10. I burned the DVD and it booted okay. Going through the startup stuff, select language, keyboard, ect and then I choose the dvd as the source of the image. Then I get "no driver found" and gives me the option to choose from a list of drivers or to use a driver disk. I saw something in the forums about someone having the same problem but theirs was a video card issue. On the list of drivers it looks like they are network card drivers. I have no idea what to do. I am using a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5500 if that helps. I also did not verify the iso, though wouldn't it not boot at all if the iso image was broken?

I known the Driver Disk can be loaded by anaconda when specifying the 'dd=xx' parameter. But how should I do if I still want to use these drivers which are included in the Driver Disk in an up running Operating System?
I have not a real environment to test it, but looks like the driver modules in the Driver Disk won't be installed into the real installed system. Am I right? Are there some tools which can load Driver Disk in a up running Operating System?

This is my first attempt with Yum and Fedora for that matter. I need to load a print driver and network driver for an MX860 printer. I downloaded the drivers and they are in the download folder. When I try to install I get what is below. How do I resolve? Do I need to identify where the driver is? If so, how?
[compaq@compaq ~]$ su -c'yum install cnijfilter-mx860series-3.10-1-i386-rpm.tar.gz'

I just did a clean install of 11.04. Now when I try to boot the machine I get the following error: Quote:
error: no such device
error: no such disk
error: you need to load the kernel first
Then I am taken to the Grub menu. Selecting anything from the Grub menu brings this error back up. So now I'm stuck with a computer that won't work.?

I am running Fedora 13 and KDE 4.5.5 (approximately). My video card is an ATI Radeon HD 5750. I have been having problems with the drivers for this card (as described here), having tried both the open-source driver and the proprietary ATI driver.
Recently I tried to install the new Catalyst 11.2 from ATI. In the process I broke something. Now when I boot, Fedora cannot load KDE. It reaches the screen with a progress bar at the bottom and "Fedora 13" in the lower right corner. The progress bar fills and becomes all white, then the system stalls. (I can boot into a command-line, though.)
I have had this problem once before. Last time I got it working again by following Fenrin's instructions in this thread. This time it does not work.
How can I get KDE back and running, using either the proprietary or the open-source driver?

I have a Samsung ML-1430 laser printer connected to my Fedora 12 box. I downloaded the appropriate Linux driver tar file from the Samsung website. After extracting the tar file into a directory called image, the following took place:
This generates a "Linux Printer Package Setup" pop-up screen.
The following error messages occur after I process the pop-up screen which specifies a default install path [/usr/local/linuxprinter] and asks me to check an "Install CUPS 1.1" box and a "Begin Install" box.

I am running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS and have had no problems with my ATI card up to kernel 2.6.32-29. Upon update/upgrade to 2.6.32-30 the FGLRX driver will not load graphics and I can only get the text system login. If I reboot to -29 everything works great.

After a failed upgrade from 10.10, I went for a complete reinstall. What I'm seeing is that when I install the nvidia-current driver x / gdm doesn't seem to load. I get a blank screen for a bit, then it drops to the last lines in the terminal from loading up. I can ctr-alt-f1 to get to the first tty.
What I'm seeing in my .xsession-errors file is:
Code:

What I'm seeing in my Xorg.0.log is

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:
[Code]...
What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

I recently upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 on my x86_64 system. The upgrade went fine except it cannot load the driver for my Matrox M9148. ("m9x")I simply get a "Cannot load driver" error. (there is more to it, will paste when I finish work)Basically the driver is there and in place, it loads it but cannot use it.When I go to reinstall the driver again manually, it dies with an error only supports Xorg up to 7.5So, now I see this is an Xorg and driver compat issue.I have reported it to Matrox and am awaiting a reply.
In the mean time though, since I need my machine working, is there anyway around the issue, or could I even roll back xorg to whatever it was in 10.04 to get the drivers working again?

Now, my issue is that I have no access to ethernet in my apartment so I need to rely on wifi for my install. But during the install when it is looking for the network hardware it never sees the TP-Link Dongle and never asks if I wan to load the firmware. I even tried it with the CD image that has the non-free drivers included but it never asks for the drivers. Any other distro, like Linux Mint 7.3, sees the dongle fine.
So is there a way to force load the realtek-firmware drivers during install?

I have a Nvidia 275GTX and I installed the nvidia drivers via RPM fusion and blacklisted Nouveau as instructed by a guide online that I see matches the one on these forums. When my system boots up now instead of having the cool blue screen with the fedora logo in the middle that loads up I get a black screen with a bar at the bottom that says Fedora 15 to the right and the bar fills up blue and white. It looks like 8 bit Nintendo. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way to get the nice Fedora 15 load screen back?

I have my first problem with drivers in Linux! I installed openSuSE 11.4 x86 on my computer (Intel Dual-Core 2,5 Ghz; Nvidia 7300 GS) and after installing graphical drivers (proprietary) I can't load the system. All I have is a progress bar of user's profile loading and playing the startup sound. I already installed openSUSE 11.4 x86_64 version on this computer and there was no problem with drivers.

Recently, I bought the HP Officejet 4500 especially because of the automatic feeder for the scanner. The device is not supported by Fedora, but I found the driver for it at the HP driver site for Fedora 11 and / or 12.Now, I have two questions. First, I wonder why these drivers are not part of a Fedora distribution yet. Is there still some issue with it going on (something related to my second question or something completely different)?Second, the software (Sane) doesn't recognize different sheets of paper. When I place some 20 sheets of paper in the automatic feeder, the scanner scans them all, but only the first sheet is processed by Sane. Now, I saw that Sane in Fedora 13 is different than in Fedora 11 or 12. I expect it is improved, but I have not been able to work with it yet. Can I expect that it does recognize different sheets of paper from a scan with an automatic feeder?

I've running ubuntu 11.04 on my samsung 900x3A notebook and have a problem using the touchpad: I've configured my touchpad using "GPointing device settings", but everytime I reboot my system I've to start "GPointing device settings" manually to apply the settings for the current session. Is there a way to do this automatically?
Secondly I've the following problem: I cannot use "click and move" with my touchpad. For example, when I try to move a window around: Normally one would click the left button, hold it and move the window via touchpad. But every time I click the left button, any other movement with my touchpad is disabled. Is there a way around this?

I'm trying to load RHEL4 (I know, I know, but I can't get around that) on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 using a kickstart file. I start the install using 'linux acpi=off ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg' (I use acpi=off otherwise it hangs at some ACPI embedded controller message). It does not recognize my CD-ROM drive, though, and asks me to choose the driver or point to a driver disk. I've selected 'Advanced Host Controller Interface SATA (ahci)' and it is able to continue on. It forgets that it was supposed to run off of the kickstart, though, and goes into the default graphical install. My question is...how do I add a line into the kickstart to choose this driver?

I'm unable to login to my Kubuntu Lucid. The login screen takes my password, blanks, then returns me to the login screen. I'm getting some graphics errors when running from recovery mode as well as the no space left on device error when attempting to start x from the terminal. Here are some outputs: When starting from recovery mode, selecting failsafeX from the Recovery Menu:
[Code]...
I've come to the conclusion that my root partition is full, but I'm not sure how to clear space, or how much to clear once I work out how to do it. I removed a few packages with apt, but it doesn't seem to have any effect. df -h shows that root is 100% full, yet it has 3GB free. I've grown comfortable with Ubuntu in the couple years I've been using it, yet this level of problem-solving is a bit nerve-wracking to me. I've been considering reinstalling (this machine is running Lucid upgraded from Karmic and Jaunty and has a few oddities), but I hate the idea of being forced to reinstall because I can't overcome this problem. If you need any other information or outputs from terminal commands, I'm happy to provide it.

Is there a way to switch a internal card slot from /dev/mmcblk0** to /dev/sd** ? I'm backing up (via rsync) an ebook directory (1.9gb) to sd card and get massive i/o errors, card turning read-only,etc. This is via a built-in slot on a toshiba laptop. When I use a card reader, the card attaches to /dev/sdd1 and all is fine.
This is a new Sid install. The laptop's card slot worked fine under Ubuntu 9.04 and still works if the amounts of data are small. All I can figure is that the mmcblk device dies under a heavy load...
