Ubuntu Installation :: FGLRX Driver Will Not Load Graphics

Mar 28, 2011

I am running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS and have had no problems with my ATI card up to kernel 2.6.32-29. Upon update/upgrade to 2.6.32-30 the FGLRX driver will not load graphics and I can only get the text system login. If I reboot to -29 everything works great.

Ubuntu Installation :: NVIDIA Graphics Driver - Graphics Mode Option Via The Start (GRUB)?

Jan 26, 2010

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

Hardware :: Thinkpad T400 Graphics Cards And Fglrx 9.8

Aug 18, 2009

I have a Thinkpad T400 running FC11 and am using integrated (intel) graphics, because I know FC11 doesn't have 3-D acceleration support for the ATI Radeon Mobility 3470. I take this to be because the 2.6.29 kernel and the X Server release were too new, and unsupported. I know from phoronix that 2.6.29 is now in fact supported with the advent of 9.8, and that I believe my X server is supported too.

As far as I can tell, this means I **should** be able to use fglrx..I was wondering how one backed up their X configuration on Fedora, as it doesn't really use xorg.conf very much. I was also wondering how to reconfigure X for a completely new graphics card with a completely new driver, without reinstalling. That is, quite simply, out of the question for me, as I've made many customizations to Fedora, and I don't have the time to back them up and restore them.

Ubuntu :: FGLRX And 10.10 - Some OpenGL Apps Don't Load

Dec 21, 2010

I need to use FGLRX on my laptop, if I don't, either some OpenGL apps don't load, or the performance is poor.. With FGLRX the performance of the app is great and all work..

However, since Ubuntu 10.10, FGLRX no longer has "smooth" video.. And what I mean by that, even a simple DVD is dropping like 50% of it's frames every second with FGLRX. However, if I use the open source ATI driver, there is no video performance problem and even HD video plays fine, but then GL apps become a problem again..

In Ubuntu 10.04 FGLRX didn't have this problem. I did try to upgrade to the latest FGLRX 10.12, and every time I try on Ubuntu 10.10, I result with X not starting at all..

Here's the kicker though, the built in Movie Player with Ubuntu, works fine no matter which driver is used.. Now this wouldn't be an issue for me, but DVD's don't play right in that player, it runs like it's vibrating, but all other video formats work fine..

I'm at a loss. I gave up Linux a few months ago and wanted to try again, but once again, ATI is letting me down, and this is a laptop, buying a new laptop just because of the GPU is out of the question.

Fedora Installation :: Crippling Graphics Error When Trying To Load Live CD

Aug 4, 2010

I'm not entirely new to Linux, but I'm far from a standard user. I decided to give it another try with Fedora on my new Asus G60JX laptop. Specs: Intel Core i5 430m, Nvidia GeForce GTX 360m, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

When I attempt to run the live CD from either a physical CD or a bootable flash drive, it loads as usual. However, once Fedora goes to the desktop, I get this screen:

As you may be able to tell, it's a garbled version of the Windows desktop I had previous to the reboot. Evidently, something in my hardware is not supported. However, I fail to see how I can install drivers when this is literally all I can coax the computer into doing.

Software :: Fedora 11 Lenovo Laptop Fglrx OR Radeonhd Discrete Graphics

Jul 10, 2009

I just put Fedora 11 on my Lenovo Thinkpad t400. I selected the integrated (lousy, but Intel (supported)) graphics device in the BIOS, but I really hate the lower performance than the discrete graphics device. However, this device requires fglrx or radeonhd for DRI. RPMFusion has not released an (a)kmod-fglrx, so I can't use that. I have heard radeonhd has some stability issues though, and I don't know how to install. I was wondering how I could completely change my graphics configuration (change chipsets in the BIOS) and get the X Server in Fedora 11 working with the new driver and chipset. Is it a good idea to use radeonhd, or should I wait for the fglrx?

Even then, how would I completely change my graphics configuration so it would work with a different card & driver? I don't want to do a fresh install because I've done a lot of work & customization with the F11.I don't know anything about radeonhd, so any information about this kind of thing would be useful. Finally, should I just suck it up and deal with the Intel graphics? Is anything of this sort really worth my time? (I'm willing to spend quite a bit, trust me!)

Debian Hardware :: ATI R7 Graphics Card - Open Source Radeon Or Fglrx Catalyst?

Jul 11, 2014

I've set up this new PC, the graphic card I picked is the ATI R7 260X, pretty good card with lots of core processors, high clock and 2GB memory. I'm now currently using the 14.4 catalyst drive, it works actually alright, though, there are some mishaps with this driver:

First my hdmi screen had scale down, leaving black borders around, even though the catalyst control said the correct native resolution, this turned out to be a underscan that fglrx does and I've finally managed to fix it. Other caveat is that the screen simply won't suspend or turn off( via software), DPMS actually works, forcing it turns the screen blank for some seconds but something does not allow the screen to sleep.

Performance wise it seems pretty good though, everything is pretty smooth, being able to play games maxed out on resolution and ultra settings, though, I still haven't tested out that many games.

The open-source radeon on the other hand, well its open-source, fully xorg and linux compatible, which is a major plus point. It seem it has come a long way, supporting lot of features and providing better performance in some cases.

Before installing Catalyst I had issues with mesa and steam, steam would complain about not finding the 32bit libraries, this is however a steam runtime issue, maybe it could already be fixed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty - With Graphics Driver - Gnucash And Shutdown

May 4, 2011

I just did an install of Natty into a separate partition and incurred several problems. I have a Dell-DXP061 with 4 GB of memory and an Nvidia GForce 7300LE and a Dell 27in. monitor at a resolution of 1920x1200.

Initially it booted in to Ubuntu Classic as expected due to needing a proprietary video driver. So the first thing I did was to install the recommended Nvidia driver and attempted to reboot. It would not start either Unity or Classic. So I did a re-installation and then selected the experimental open 3D driver and was then able to bring up the system in both Unity and Ubuntu Classic. I installed a number of programs including cairo-dock, which I really like, emacs23, and gnucash. I have used gnucash for years and consider it a necessity. However, the Natty version will not display correctly the "gnucash-data" file I created with version 2.2.9 that I have been running on 10.10. This is almost a show stopper for me.

When I try to do a restart, the screen goes black, "Ubuntu" appears with the little dots, three of the dots change color and the system hangs. The system only stops when I hold the power button to effect a complete power outage. Interestingly the LiveCD did not seem to have a problem with restart.

I can see how a causal user might like the Unity interface, but I don't think that I am interested. I guess I will stick to gnome for a while, at least until Gnome3 and then I am not sure where I will go.

Ubuntu :: Installing The Latest ATi Driver - Fglrx - Fails On 9.10

May 22, 2010

I got tired of not being able to run any 3D apps on my integrated Intel and went out and came home with a ATi Radeon HD 4650. Skip the bit about how I could have gotten an nVidia (they didn't have any HTPC compatible low-profile nVidias on shelf).

Actually the card works very well, it runs all the 3D apps I've thrown at it so far (and quite a bit faster too).

My problem is with video playback: it is jerky. The framerate stalls and then speeds up and is out of sync. When not out of sync, there is tearing. Yes I have tried turning Compiz off, didn't do anything. Weird thing is the CPU utilization is really low, so everything should be working.

I figured I would update the video drivers to the latest available on ATi website (following the instructions here) but I've ran into trouble with the installer:

Code:

How do I proceed from here? If you've got a fix for the video with the drivers in the repositories that is cool also. I don't necessarily need the latest drivers.
