I installed F15 Xfce and now I keep getting the following message after i login: Could not loop up internet address for WXZ. This will prevent Xfce from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding WXZ to the /etc/hosts on your system. I tried a fresh install just to see if I did something wrong but I keep getting the same message.

It ask me whether I want to try again or continue, I always select the latter and it doesn't give me any problems: I can still access the Internet. I don't get this error on Gnome or LDXE . What does it mean by adding home to /etc/hosts?

With the help of posts of this site Ive made good progress with complicated stuffnamely getting Samba and VNC working. My Fedora machine and my windows machines now see each others shared files, and I can control my Fedora machine from my windows machine. (The Fedora machine will ultimately be headless.)
But Im having trouble with a seemingly simple issue setting up my Fedora box with a static IP address. With DHCP enabled on my network Ethernet adapter, all works fine. I then used the System>Administration>Network menu to disable DHCP and to assign the same IP address that DHCP chose. When I do this, two cases need to be distinguished:
1. If I keep the box checked for Controlled by Network Manager, the Network Manager Applet reports a network connection, I nevertheless cannot access the internet, but my Fedora machine is able to communicate with my Squeezebox music player (connected to my network via my DSL modem Ethernet connections, and with a fixed IP address). 2. If I uncheck the box Controlled by Network Manger, then the Network Manager Applet reports no network connection and my Fedora machine is not able to communicate with my Squeezebox music player (and I of course have no internet connectivity).
Ive seen references on other posts suggesting that the Network Manager service be disabled. But I see no way to manually configure the network.
I removed the LXDE and XFCE packages and now when I try to boot into F14 it goes into a loop between the login page and the fedora icon with blue background showing a X over the icon. In other words, it is looping between the login screen and the previous screen. I think I broke it good. Is there anyway to recover from this?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI am struggling with what might be a minor problem. I have a home computer which I would like to setup as a webserver and hence give it a static IP address. It is connected to by wire to a router that is connected to the WAN via PPPOE. If I enable the network card on DHCP it works fine in browsing the web. If I now set it to static IP address it does not brown. Essentially I use the command setup to run the static IP setup. I then set my IP address to 192.168.254.X , the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway to 192.168.254.1 (this is the router connected to the WAN). I am able to ping the router, however when I try and browse on static it does not work. Your help will be most appreciated as this has taken way too long to solve and I have Googled as much without success.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just installed fedora12 from the Live CD couldn't get my mobile broadband to work on the Live CD, thought I would go ahead and install anyway and hoped for more success from the installation.
But nothing seems to work. I have tried just plugging it in and waiting for it to be registered, I have tried various manual set ups including enabling point to point encryption in the VPN manager and nothing seems to work at all.
The device is a Huawei K3520 USB modem.
Am I just doing something really stupid or is there some obscure method to get this working.
This is the only internet connection which i have available at the moment so anything I download will have to be done through Windows and copied across, i.e. I can't use YUM.

though method of editing /etc/network/interfaces worked for me i have decided to get gui work.i have installed wicd, i set wep key for connecting to my network. when i'm scanning wicd find my network. but i get error "couldn't obtain ip address". when i dived into logs i found that there is some problem with wpa_supplicant. here is piece of log:

I have installed openSUSE KDE 11.3 on my notebook. Everything looks great, but I can't connect on internet. It looks like dhcp don't work. Wireless works fine, only auto eth0 don't work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit regular old desktop version) machine has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 does not connect to my router (and thus the Internet) automatically. I have to manually click on it in the NetworkManager applet after every reboot.
Internet connection sharing has also been impossible. I gave up trying to do that after about 2 weeks. I was simply trying to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP machine over eth1, but it never worked. I could ping one machine from the other, but couldn't get to the Internet from the Win XP machine.
Removing NetworkManager may be the ticket. Most of the tutorials for Internet connection sharing tell you to enter commands in the console. Maybe one of them will work once I remove the NetworkManager applet.
Recently I installed a backtrack 4 final on my computer, but I couldn't browse the internet by wifi , when I use the slax networktool to analyze the newwork and see what the problem is, the tools showed as below:

I was having a problem with cairo dock, asked on the board how to resolve was told to reinstall the visual driver for my monitor since I have an ati vid card since with the updated kernal u have to reinstall those drivers(didn't know that, I'm new to opensuse). I thought I did that before so I completely uninstalled it so I could then do a fresh reinstall but I wasn't paying attention and my laptop was unplugged for a while. I stepped away while the install was going on and my laptop died.
I tried plugging it in but had to restart my laptop when I did I got the command line rows and when I tried to start GDM it wouldn't start, I did so as SU. Attempted to connect to the internet via networkmanager and couldn't get wifi or wired to work. Anyway I can access my desktop visually just so I can start yast and install the driver or will I have to reinstall 11.2 or use the cd to repair? If so how do I use the cd to repair?

Everything worked for a long time until one fine day the network management just disappeared from both System/Preferences menu and the panel on top.I can run a Live CD with Fedora 12 on that machine and it immediately connects to our home wireless network. Booting from hard drive has no sign of NM. Trying to run 'yum install NetworkManager-gnome' does nothing because there is no connection. Running the same command as a LiveUser from CD does seem to install everything (but where to???), no errors reported, and still the is no network functionality upon reboot from the hard drive, even when plugging to LAN with a cable.It seems that I need NetworkManager in order to go online in order to install NetworkManager.I have other computers at home that work fine, I was able to download a couple of archives with NM, but I am new to Linux and have no idea what to do with those files.I could not find any step-by-step installation guides for NM, especially when the computer has no connection at all.

Whatever Partition i create first (boot or /), it gets done. However, when tryin to create the 2nd partition, i get "Could not allocate requested partitions:Not enough free space on disks." The download got to about 55 - 65% when a message about running out of space appears. The install then asks for an IP address to use so that it can download the updates as needed instead of all at once. I have been searching but not been able to find the IP address in question.
