I'm trying to install Fedora 3 Core on an old hard drive I had lying around. The problem I'm having is that when I go to manually repartition the hard drive with Disk Druid I get this error: Could not allocate requested partitions: Partitioninf Failed: Could not allocate partitions as primary partitions. I can't view the contents of the hard drive to delete stuff.

Whatever Partition i create first (boot or /), it gets done. However, when tryin to create the 2nd partition, i get "Could not allocate requested partitions:Not enough free space on disks." View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Fedora 13 on my HP dv6 laptop and when I try to use the Use Free Space installation type, I receive a Partitioning Error: Could not allocate requested partitions - not enough free space on disks. Before I started the install, I used the Disk Management utility in Windows 7 to shrink the volume of the C: drive down to 242 GB and leaving 210 GB Unallocated. Here is what the screen looks like when I select Create Custom Layout (also receive the not enough free space error):

I'm trying to install 11 on my desktop from the live CD. I already have XP and Ubuntu installed, and I know for certain that I have an additional 25 GB left with my documents partition included. I am using a ~= 1 week old hard drive, so that last 25 GB is raw and unformatted.Anyway, here's what's going on: When I attempt to create a new partition in the "free space," I get an error dialog saying "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks."I thought maybe it was a quirk with the ext3/ext4 dilemma, maybe I had to create /boot prior to /, but I tried it both ways.

So I started to install the Fedora 12 in my laptop every thing is going fine but

this pc works good in Fedora 15 ? I do not know how much space to allocate for the partitions to be created, and I do not know which partitions must be created. I need a very good performance, my computer is able to give it to me with Fedora 15?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to create a partition on my hard drive on Linux using the GParted program. I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. It usually goes to a black screen after the hp logo, that says GRUB loading.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI got rid of windows 7 and installed Ubuntu 10.04. That was a bad move because I got it to work before without too much difficulty. However this time I could not get the wireless to work. I tried the trouble shouting guide here but still keep getting the same error message: ndiswrapper (iw_get_scan:1234): couldn't allocate memoery. I know I have installed ndiswrapper and the windows XP driver correctly. And they used to work in Ubuntu 9 before I changed to Windows 7. I tried google for that error message but it seems nobody had that particular problem. The wireless adapter I am using is airnet AWU154.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working with an older PC that belongs to my parents. They've been using Ubuntu 8.04 with no problems, and with 10.4s release, I planned to upgrade them to the newest version. The system's specs are as follows:
1.5ghz Athlon XP CPU
1.5gb RAM (PC 2700)
20gb hdd (IDE)
I have tried both the Ubuntu 9.10 (two different discs) and a 10.4 install CD and both give me the same issue. The installation proceeds along swimmingly until partitioning comes up. The partition table simply shows no hard drives. I have heard of this issue occurring with SATA drives and motherboard settings, but what could make it happen to an old IDE drive? Any odd-ball motherboard settings or anything that might need to be changed? GParted and the Live disc (along with the currently installed version of Ubuntu) recognize drives and can navigate them. What gives?
GNOME has an option "Spin down hard disks when possible"; is it ever possible? I'm using a netbook so I only have one drive and the operating system is on it. Is the operating system ever idle for more than a few seconds? If I spin down my SATA drive with sdparm it spins back up immediately. It's a 320GB 7200RPM drive; just wondering if I could save some battery life.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my latop. I have an older 80 gig HP laptop with Windows XP. Currently, i have XP as the NTFS drive and it takes up about 72 gigs of space, the swap drive for ubuntu is about 256 MB and the ext-3 drive is 2.5 gigs. However, i have no more hard drive space to run or instal any programs on Ubuntu. So what i need to do is decrease the NTFS drive as i still have over 30 gigs of free space on my laptop and increase the ext3 drive to about 10 or 15 gigs and increase the swap drive?

Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

Q1: I know that I can pthread_setaffinity() for user-mode thread and mpstat for monitoring. So, how can I allocate a core for kernel process and monitor it?

I have an Acer Aspire One that came with Windows 7 starter and 1GB of ram. I am currently trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 via USB drive. The problem that I am having is, whenever I get to the Allocate drive space screen it shows nothing. The box is pink with not text. If I click on Install now anyway I receive a No Root File System error. Currently the hard drive has NO partitions on it, including no file systems. It's completely blank and it is also showing up in my BIOS.

I didn't really know what I was doing during install and wound up leaving myself with over 100GB of unallocated hard drive space. if I create a new partition out of this, could I possibly merge it with another? and if I do, should I merge it with root or home? The drive and disk said I didn't have enough memory open to install (I have 160GB open)upon looking around in the demo, i noticed that it couldn't find my hard drive as it wasn't on the drive explorer. So i searched for answers and found a few possible ones but i wanted to find someone with my exact problem--Couldn't find any. So then I came upon the Windows Installer and Tried it out. All went well until i had to reboot, it said it couldn't find the installation.iso (which is indeed on my computer) and that i should run "Chkdsk /r" and i did. Nothing changed. I still believe that Ubuntu can't see my hard drive when windows can, why is this? Is there a way to fix it? EDIT: How could I forget to mention I'm on Windows 7?
View 5 Replies View Relatedi'm tying to dual boot Vista64 (already installed) and Fedora 10 x86_64. I am running a Dell XPS 410 running 2 sata hard drives raid 0 (ICH8DH). I started the process by shrinking my C drive on disk0 leaving 64.45GB of unallocated space. Next I rebooted into Fedora install DVD and when i get to blue graphical install screen i get message asking if my drive is GPT and if it is it may be corrupted. I click NO, and it comes up with a message telling me i have to initialize my drive if i want to use it ( have to click NO twice) and if i do it i will lose all my data.
i can click no and keep proceding through the install until i get to the partition setup screen. No hard drives or partitions are shown. I've tried googling the problem and get bits of pieces of information scattered in different parts but nothing conclusive to my problem i think. As far as my background of knowledge goes, I'm new to the linux community but give me a thorough guide and i'll do fine (i hope). I've been using fedora on a separate laptop for 2 days now .

I just bought a new 2 TB hard disk to replace my old 175 gig one. I currently am dual-booting Lucid Lynx and Windows 7, and rather than go through the process of reinstalling both, then reinstalling all my programs, settings, and everything, I was wondering if there's a way I can just copy the partitions on my 175 GB disk to the new one, grow them to fill up the rest of the free space on the new 2 TB disk, and then plug that HD into the primary master plug on my motherboard... will that work?

So the disk space is split up like this. 15GB for Linux + 42GB + 21 GB. I just want to know whether I can extend this 15gb so that the full of 80GB can be used without having to mount it. Or in other words can I remove the partition and make it into one single drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently bought the "new" Macbook from Apple. It obviously came with OSX preinstalled. And I'm obviously not satisfied with the way it works, I also need a FAT32 partition so I can share my files between all three OS's. Tricky business. And I thought later on I might try and create me a nice LFS system to learn about Linux and show of to my mates. But doesn't a single hard drive only support up to 4 partitions? So off I went and got Ubuntu running besides Mac. It wasnt recognized by neither the default boot-loader nor rEFIt straight away. I had to hold alt to come up with the special BIOS or something every time I needed to use Ubuntu (always).
I got up to a point where I could run Ubuntu with wireless, sound and pretty much everything working. Until the kernel updates were installed. Somehow I (or maybe it) managed to screw up and booting had become impossible, for it would crash halfway through with kernel errors and other undefined weirdnesses. Meanwhile I had tried installing Windows 7 on a different partition. Which I found to be catastrophic also. I was forced to put up with OSX, which in my opinion is fine at what it does but it doesn't do very much for me. After a couple of tries I had to give up on fiddling with Ubuntu for I needed Windows 7 to run software for school. So my current partition layout looks like this......
Ubuntu 10.10 I would like to access the partitions of my hard drive from the Places menu. They show up there, but when I click them, the menu just closes. I can access them by navigating Places>Computer>"Drive_Name" but it would be more convenient. I was able to access them before, but something has apparently changed..
