I'm trying to install Fedora 11 on a Dell Latitude c810 (PIII 1ghz, 256mb ram, GeForce2 GO)
When trying to boot from the Live CD it goes to the first fedora boot screen where it counts down from 10 then tries to boot.
It then says "IO Apic resources could not be allocated" then moves onto a fedora loading bar which completes... but the next screen is completely black, I've tried letting it stay there for 10 or so minutes but nothing happens.

I was able to copy the iso file and tried the installation however I stubbled upon the same problem I had when I tried installing Fedora 11. The message I received was "(1) (0.048001) MP-BIOS bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC (2) (0.064001) Kernel panic-not syncing:IO-APIC + timer doesn't work Book with apic debug and send a report. Then try booting with the 'no apic-option'.

Can somebody tell me how to disable apic in the grub? I've already edited the grub text file and added "noapic" in the kernel line. Now is there something similar to "sudo update-grub" that I have to run (I ask because it's not saving when I reboot)? I know in ubuntu you have to run that command in order for the changes to the text file to take place in the grub. Is there a command similar to that for Fedora?

I successfully before install Ubuntu on my last laptop along with windows vista and it was rather easy because ubuntu allowed me to partition the disk so simply. However, on my vaio, my whole hard disk is partition and there is no unallocated space. It will not allow me to partition the disk and when I boot up the ubuntu live cd to install, the partitioner doesn't look the same and I'm hesitant to make any changes because I'm afraid I'm going to damage my data. I have a 500GB HDD in which I want to use just 60GB for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows 7. Also, I'm running 64-bit Windows if that matters at all.

I am trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on an system which already has XP installed. I had used Ubuntu earlier but when I installed XP ( in an attempt to dual boot) I seem to have lost the Ubuntu Installation. But the problem is GParted or the Ubuntu installer dont recognize the existing partitions but instead see it as an empty unallocated drive. I have a 120GB hard disk. Below is the extract after fdisk:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x4fa8a60b
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x4fa8a60b .....
Also this is how the disk Utility in Ubuntu sees my system: ( See attachment)

I installed F15 Xfce and now I keep getting the following message after i login: Could not loop up internet address for WXZ. This will prevent Xfce from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding WXZ to the /etc/hosts on your system. I tried a fresh install just to see if I did something wrong but I keep getting the same message.

I recently installed Bio-Linux 5.0 as a dual boot system with XP for some bioinformatics applications, but Im having some problems with the amount of disk space which can be allocated specifically for the Ubuntu install.
I partitioned a 250 GB portable hard drive into:
/dev/sdb1: 154.76 GiB (with 30 GiB allocated for Ubuntu)
/dev/sdb2 : 78.13 GiB
Ive been using blastclust to analyse some very large data sets, which keeps on crashing due to filesystem running out of disk space.
When I installed Bio-Linux 5.0 from the live cd, the maximum size I could allocate to the install was 30 GiB, and I havent been able to find a way to change this.
Ive tried using System->Administration->Partition Editor using the live cd, and can view / delete the partitions, but I cant find a way to specifically alter the disk space allocation for Ubuntu.
How do I increase the filesystem size to larger than the current 30 GiB?

I have just installed fedora12 from the Live CD couldn't get my mobile broadband to work on the Live CD, thought I would go ahead and install anyway and hoped for more success from the installation.
But nothing seems to work. I have tried just plugging it in and waiting for it to be registered, I have tried various manual set ups including enabling point to point encryption in the VPN manager and nothing seems to work at all.
The device is a Huawei K3520 USB modem.
Am I just doing something really stupid or is there some obscure method to get this working.
This is the only internet connection which i have available at the moment so anything I download will have to be done through Windows and copied across, i.e. I can't use YUM.
lsusb returns the following:
Not sure where the E620 comes from the model number on the case is k3520

Does anyone know of any decent web guides that will help me set up a DNS service running on 127.0.0.1 that will automatically forward requests like [url] to httpd running on 127.0.0.1 yet forwards requests to [url]to a 'proper' DNS service?

i have 2 front ends that receive traffic (http server) and should run some scripts in crontab, some of the scripts should just being running by 1 server at a time (active one) and others should run on both. Regarding the http like is load-sharing i think i cant use heartbeat, right? heartbeat is just for active-stanby or can we use to a active-active as watchdog? i have a cisco css to load sharing the http, and i can make a watchdog script to the apache. Regarding the cron crontrol i was thinking to make a script that replaces the crontab file to whatever is the correct one.
When the heartbeat start what parameter is sent to the script that are resources? a start if active node and nothing if is the standby?allways start?how should i config the haresources to do it? what is the best way? i have other situation that is making a nfs server in solaris 10, i have 2 servers with shared disks ( sun array), can i use heartbeat to this too? it is possible to make it in such way that if i had i failover in nfs server the clients doesn't need to reconnect?

I am trying to share a couple of resources from my fedora 12 box to a windows vista, using samba. It seems absolutely fine to share any folder but as soon as I am trying to share a folder which is used as a mount point windows cannot access this folder. I get the following message from windows:"the network cannot be found". This must be due to some permission, but I cannot find which one.
Note that windows can access the folder but as soon as the device is mounted I v#can see the folder in windows but cannot access it. Here is a copy of the smb.config file:
[global]
workgroup = workgroup
server string = GAIA
security = share
;guest account = nobody
[Code]...
Note that I have been trying to execute the same with mounting and sharing a raid1, but windows cannot see it.

My son's desktop has Fedora 12 and a wireless card. Everything worked for a long time until one fine day the network management just disappeared from both System/Preferences menu and the panel on top.I can run a Live CD with Fedora 12 on that machine and it immediately connects to our home wireless network. Booting from hard drive has no sign of NM. Trying to run 'yum install NetworkManager-gnome' does nothing because there is no connection. Running the same command as a LiveUser from CD does seem to install everything (but where to???), no errors reported, and still the is no network functionality upon reboot from the hard drive, even when plugging to LAN with a cable.It seems that I need NetworkManager in order to go online in order to install NetworkManager.I have other computers at home that work fine, I was able to download a couple of archives with NM, but I am new to Linux and have no idea what to do with those files.I could not find any step-by-step installation guides for NM, especially when the computer has no connection at all.

The "MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC" error message shows up on boot on at least one of my RHEL servers, and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. My understanding of the situation is that the timer is located elsewhere on the motherboard than where the kernel looks for it. Is this correct?
I've come across people suggestin one should disable APIC by adding "noapic" to the kernel boot options, but which consequences does this imply - in SNP setups only one CPU will be used by the kernel?

I have some virtual machines running with CentOS 5.3 (32 bit) and everything works as expected. To test a possible upgrade I took one of then and did yum clean all yum update after rebooting I get a kernel panic with the following message:
MP BIOS BUG : 8254 timer not connected to APIC IO I know that I can change the boot command not to use APIC and after that the machine boots again but I doubt that there has been any change to the virtual APIC implementation during the upgrade of the OS. Is there anything that iI should exclude from upgrading while working in a vm? I use VMWare Player 2.5.3 build-185404 on a 64 bit Ubuntu 9.04 as host.

After searching other similar posts I have not found an answer. I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.4.1 after reformatting the computer from the previous Ubuntu Edgy. When rebooting get this msg (in title). I used the live CD to get into the grub files to see if I could ad 'noacip' option. But was looking for 'menu lst' file and found none. Currently when I boot I don't get any menu list and therefore no options at the bottom. Should be an easy problem to resolve Powerspec B364/160gb/856Ram/ATI raedon 200 express onboard/Geforce 8400GS PCI-e

I attached a picture showing a 2.7GB swap partition in the program named Disk Utility. Also in the pic on the upper right is the program htop running and you see Swap is showing up as "Swp[ 0/0MB]". And in the middle right is Sytem Monitor showing no swap space being used and that the swap space size is 0 bytes. This all happened after resizing the partitions using gparted. I resized all the partitions. Part of what I did was increase the size of the swap partition from 512MB to 2.7GB. But, as you can see, after rebooting the system no longer is using the swap space. And it seems, according to the pic of System Monitor that there is no swap space. Is there a way to fix this so Ubuntu will use the swap space?
