I removed the LXDE and XFCE packages and now when I try to boot into F14 it goes into a loop between the login page and the fedora icon with blue background showing a X over the icon. In other words, it is looping between the login screen and the previous screen. I think I broke it good. Is there anyway to recover from this?

I have a box built by a local shop (AMD Sempron 2400+, 1.? gig RAM). It used to have XP on it, but I replaced that with 9.10. I tried installing 10.04 from CD and encountered the login loop problem many others have experienced. I had it working once when I re-installed 9.10 and then ran the upgrade to 10.04. I got the login loop that had music up to the cymbal crash, which was clipped near the end. I tried the recommendation to switch to a command line terminal, log in, run sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm, and then restart gdm. It worked, and I should have left well enough alone. However, I thought that it would be cleaner to install from the CD. Unfortunately, when I got to the login screen I only got a blank screen when trying <ctrl><alt><F1> (or <F2, etc). <ctrl><alt><F8> took me back to the login screen where I still encounter the login loop.
I also tried the recommendation to run the install with the F6 parameter nomodset selected. That resulted in loosing the music during the login loop, although I've discovered that sometimes it's simply because the sound is starting out muted.
Another recommendation was to drop into GRUB when first powering up. It took me a while, but I finally found out that one must hold down the shift key on power up to get to GRUB. While that did let me log in to a command line screen, running dpkg-reconfigure gdm did not work, this time. Neither did the idea of editing the GRUB command line to replace quiet splash with nomodeset.
I have read many posts on this forum talking about this problem as it applies to Nvidia or ATI graphics cards. Has anyone had any experience with the VIA video built into a motherboard? Running lshw -C Display while booted from the 9.10 CD says that I have a VIA KM400/KN400/P4M800 [S3 UniChrome] video system.
A recommendation from one of my local PLUG friends was to revert to an earlier video driver that works. Is this possible? Can I take the video driver from 9.10 and use it for 10.04? If so, how do I find it -- what's it called, where is it, what is the 10.04 driver called, and where is it, and can I just change the name of 9.10's driver (if it is different from 10.04's)? If it isn't obvious that I really don't know how this level of things work, let me confess that I don't.
I just finished the upgrade of 10.10 to 11.04, restarted and now i can't login anymore, i'm stuck in an endless login loop.
1) Boot
2) Xorg starts
3) I see my user, login
4) Screen goes black like it's loading
5) Loop back to login
It's not a password issue, i can login in command line It's not a profile issue cause i tried creating a new user from the command line and it still loops. I looks briefly at the /var/log/... but i couldn't find anything relevant,respond ASAP this is my work PC.
I thought it would be simple since it's a very simple a relatively new machine (2months ago)
Fedora 15, fresh install.I changed the wallpaper from default to a solid colour. After switching between gradient to colour the system crashed logged me out and upon logging in it simply runs endlessly accessing my harddisk but never actually loading the desktop.I can kill X and reboot, but it's the same problem waiting for me on restart. I really don't want to re-install or delete users (to put it in context, I just spent 3 days trying to install Fedora because Anaconda doesn't know how to install GRUB correctly).

I can go into safe graphics mode and things look fine except compiz isn't running. I have tried going into login and changing it to log me in automatically but the problem remains.
I've tried using my previous kernal and I have the same issue as this newer one.
I've tried loading gdm from CLI and the problem is still there.
Having logged in (to Fedora 11) with a terminal session, what command do I give to spawn the Gnome GUI desktop environment? Background: I'm running two Fedora boxes: one local, and one at the other end of my building (on fast LAN). I have full control/ownership of both boxes.
On the local box, I log-in to my vanilla F11 build, and I get the Gnome GUI automatically. Then I can open a terminal window, 'ssh -X -l myself remotebox; cinelerra' to run Cinelerra nicely in local desktop windows.
But sometimes I want to see my typical user desktop for the remote box. Now, IF the remote box is ALREADY running Gnome, I can VNC to it, etc. But, once having logged-out of the remote box, VNC closes and won't show me a GUI login page. (BTW: The remote box usually has no monitor, as well as being out of reach. So schlepping over to logon to it is a real pain.) So, here's the thing: I can login (to terminal session) and can bring up programs in local windows. But WHAT program do I launch in order to bring up Gnome??
I recently used a GParted CD to resize my partition with Vista installed on it in order to make room for another partition in which I installed Linux onto. I, unfortunately, did not back up my data. My Vista partition now does not show up in Grub and when I set it to just boot to the Vista install it will never boot and is stuck in a loop.
I tried using this guide to try to get it back. My problem comes about halfway through this guide when I go to repair my Vista installation nothing shows up under installations. I would really like to get my data from the Vista partition. I guess if I'm SOL then at least I'll remember to backup my data next time..
No problems during installation (except DVD didn't automatically eject at end).
On booting, I got a bar across the foot of the screen (shades of blue, which then changed to white with Fedora 11 on RHS); then waited ... no change, no keyboard or mouse response.
Repeated the whole installation again - same result.
Then installed Fedora 9 and it booted OK; using Admin/Display showed a default CRT and XGI Volari Z7 video card.
when I get into the login page, I can only see the background and the login box in the middle of the page just turns whole white and keeps flashing. no response for any clicks. I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.

I tried to install fedora 12 in my old dell laptop LATITUDE D800. In first boot I get the black screen with

I see several discussions regarding this issues, but I could not resolve the problem. For example, I cannot find system-config-display. This is a fresh installation and there are no other OS in my hard disc.
When I boot slackware, I have all the boot process that run but too fast. I don't have time to read what's running. Is there a way to to go page by page. I didn't find any key in my keyboard to stop and go.

I have now a loop problem for the login process.
On a terminal I can read such a message about BASH :
Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.

I installed F15 Xfce and now I keep getting the following message after i login: Could not loop up internet address for WXZ. This will prevent Xfce from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding WXZ to the /etc/hosts on your system. I tried a fresh install just to see if I did something wrong but I keep getting the same message.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi am able to try ubuntu and everything works fine until i try to install. the menu comes up to the first page where it tells you to plug in your machine and make sure there is enough disk space and network connectivity. when i hit next on this page the mouse icon changes but the next page never loads. the longest i let it hang there was 2 hours. ive tried multiple times with the same result.

I downloaded the OS I wished to use, loaded it onto a clean 4.0GB drive, everything went as planned. But then I rebooted, and it never booted the file off of the USB. So, I changed the boot options, and tried it again. Now, every time I boot with the drive in, it goes normally and then opens a blank page with only one line of text detailing the date of copyright, something about Linux, etc... And a blinking cursor. Is this normal and I just have to wait for it to load, or is something not being processed? Any information you guys need I can obtain, I'm not new to computers but I am new to changing OS's.

Now that the computer boot up normally but when it reaches the login screen it just emit a sound in the pc's speaker,he login screen flickers and is showed another login screen again and again and again (it's automatic). I am relatively new to Ubuntu/Linux and do not really know my way around especially when it comes to command prompt. Thus I need someone with patience and who can guide me step by step in order to get to the bottom of the issue and to fix it.
The issue started all of a sudden, no particular reason. I only uninstalled evolution before and then rebooted. The shutting down process got stuck forever and I turn off the PC by holding the power button. Then I attempted to start, the PC boots to the login screen and I select my name and enter the correct password as usual. Then the screen changes for a split of a second to the back command screen and I can see the word crypto or so. Then the screen returns to the login screen and this loops.

On FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe login cycles- I already have a problem with mounting something connected with USB (long term minor annoyance, but everything works), but suddenly I cannot log in. When I put my username and password in, the screen flashes black for about half a second, then the login screen re-appears. If I put the wrong password in, I get an authentication error message (as expected) without turning black and then cycling again.
I have no problems going into terminal mode and logging in. I've tried all sorts of suggestions related to this problem- reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, apt-get clean, sudo startx, and the last indicates that x-windows is already running. I've found a couple more things to try, but I'm not too sure how well they'll work. It seems to be connected with x-windows, but I don't know what is causing it. Last night I had a big problem that required reinstalling nautilus (couldn't set up a connection to a remote server), and that problem was fixed- but this developed when I booted this morning.

I applied for DDNS account & input it into router correctly . I set virtual host in server to redirect any access from port 80 to 192.168.1.2:80 in LAN . Just for in case , I also download and running the DDNS software & installed it on PC 192.168.1.2 in LAN . My DDNS provider is oray.cn . It's a Chinese server provider . I don't think there is anything wrong with oray.cn . But if you need its information just visit oray.cn (Google can translate it for you). So I want to know did I miss something to set up a web server in this kind of situation
View 2 Replies View RelatedSomething happened with my Ubuntu installation - when it reaches to the "login" "password" screen it gives the message in the upper corner that the power management has not been installed properly. So, when I try to login, it throws me back to the login screen. This happens with every prevous installation available from GRUB menu: "! Install Problem.The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact administrator."
The Recovery mode seems to work perfectly well, however it puts me in a dos prompt screen, from which I do not know how to operate.I believe one possible reason for this to happen is that my Hard Disk where Ubuntu is installed, altogether with the SWAP disc which ubuntu uses, are completely full. I tried to free some space through my installation of Vista, but the program Ext2fsd does not enable me to see the content on my ext3 drives, only shows first level directory structure (the foldrs appear "empty" under Vista.
Could someone help me with a "magical" command line that I can type in recovery mode please...so that I free some space from my /user/videos directory (I dont mind it wiped out completely) and also all "wine" installations, that I can also wipe out. If the reason of Ubuntu not continuing beyond login screen is space, I do not mind anything that can free some space somehow and enable it to start.
I installed fedora 15 last night, everything installed ok, but i noticed that when i shut down and before i log on, even just running from the cd, a brief message saying something along the lines of "Register 0x00004030 not found in PLL" comes up.
Is this normal? ive installed ok and every update so far has worked so i dont think its a corrupt install. Ive gone back to ubuntu for the time being but I wish to go back to fedora, though I just want to know what this error is
yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console

i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

Whenever I enter my password, it just returns me to the login page. I've tried sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop, but that didn't fix the issue.
