I installed Fedoa 13 from a Gnome Live cd which I had to burn on a DVD since I had no cd Available. I just saw that there is still the option to download the DVD image. Since my installation is quite buggy I'd like to know if installing from a DVD has better outcomes.

Only thing is Ubuntu is the sole controller of my laptop here atm and as you know installing XP will remove grub as boot controller. And while I know about SuperGrub I was wondering how, if possible,do I re-install grub from Karmic's LiveCD?

1. I want to revert back to Ubuntu (I currently am running Dual Slackware/Vista). However, given that at the end of this month 10.4 will be out, is there much advantage to installing 9.10 now and upgrading later?
2. Another way to ask this might be: Suppose you already had 9.10 (which many of you do), and suppose you also have a safe /home (so that in a fresh install you wont loose /home), what is the advantage of a fresh install as compared to Upgrade.
I've burned the installation media on several different types of media, and i'm getting an error after the 3 bars load (first screen). I've tried the verify and boot option, and it's fine. I'm trying Fedora 10 on a studio xps 1340. The error messageet isCE hpet increasing min_delta_ns to xxxxx nsec twice, thenForce XPAon: 0about 15 times, thenCE hpet increasing min_delta_ns to xxxxx nsec a few more times, this pattern alternates and the xxxxx keeps increasing, starting at something like 10000 and jumping by 50000 each time it reposts.

I had Win XP on my T61. I installed Fedora 11 from Gnome LiveCD. Now I cant even see GRUB. The laptop boots directly into Win XP. I had the partitions like this:
/dev/sda1 - Win XP - NTFS - 75 GB
/dev/sda2 - Win Recovery - NTFS - 5 GB
/dev/sda3 - /boot - ext3 - 1 GB
/dev/sda4 - Logical extended partition
/dev/sda5 - / - ext4 - 10 GB
/dev/sda6 - swap - 3 GB
Installed GRUB on the MBR (/dev/sda, and not on any partition). Once I completed installing Fedora 11 from the LiveCD and rebooted, the laptop directly boots into Win XP. No sign of Fedora there. How do I get to install GRUB now?
When I tried to boot the LiveCD (x86_64) with my Nvidia GeForce 8500GT, the display goes blank. I can hear the CD drive working, but nothing is displayed.

I am trying to Install Fedora 11 from a live install CD. I know it works because I tried it on another system. After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.
I've been trying to install fedora 12 on my laptop, however, I've been running into kernel panics on both the live cd and the install dvd. I'm using an HP HDX16 with an Intel Core Two Duo T9400 @ 2.53ghz, and a Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT. Dunno if any other hardware might be involved. Here's the text I get on my screen:

I have finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my current Linux system from Fedora Core 2 to Fedora 15. When checking the download page and from reading another thread there is apparently no isos' available for an set of install CDs. An iso is only available for DVD. Since my machine does not have a DVD drive that is obviously not an option. In the past I have only installed from a set CDs and I'm not sure which install method is the best to use. I do have a DSL internet connection and will probably need to increase my partitions sizes. Which install method do you recommend and why?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've asked this in another forum, but I'm not sure I phrased it very well. I have a desktop and a "server" at the house. The "server" is sitting across the room, with no keyboard or mouse. If I were to boot the server from a LiveCD, could I then get in with SSH and kick off the setup remotely? I'm getting "Connection refused" when trying to ssh in, so I'm guessing that the service is probably not turned on.
I checked into Reconstructor, and I think that may be the way to go, if I can figure out what I need to do. I'm thinking all I need to do is install an SSH key and start the service, then I can get into it from my desktop and proceed with the install.
Is this possible to do? Or is there a better way? I know I could lug the keyboard, mouse and monitor over to the other machine to do it, but that would mean that I couldn't do anything on my desktop (since that's where the keyboard, etc. would come from).
I managed to mess up GNOME on my ubuntu laptop. Now, I can't connect to the internet because the network manager applet is removed. Is there anyway to reinstall gnome from the livecd of ubuntu? Also, I want to uninstall GNOME and install LXDE, is there anyway to do this without uninstalling any of the applications that are installed by default with gnome, such as openoffice.org or firefox?
View 8 Replies View RelatedDownloaded the F10 live CD. Booted to it, got past the white, blue, and dark blue loading bar then my screen would be covered in black and white lines. No sign of the GUI except for a mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+backspace would cause the display to blink off and then come back on to the same thing. ctrl+alt+f2 would bring me to a terminal, logged in as root, but from there I couldn't do anything. startx would tell me I had x running on another screen.
hitting tab when booting the livecd and adding "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" to the boot line. That works. I get to the desktop at native res with desktop effects. Killer. I tried to install; install went flawless, rebooted to my HDD and the same issue, black and white bars. When booted to my HDD, however, ctrl+alt+f2 doesn't bring me to a terminal, it causes my monitor to go into sleep mode and my computer becomes unresponsive so I can't do anything from the command line.
Here's what I'm getting at : how do I get my installed version of F10 to do the "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" args that the livecd can do?
My machine is a home built machine I bought off of a friend. P4 2.4 ghz, GB RAM, 2 80GB HDDs, Radeon x1600.

On an AMD Athelon. It worked fine of F9, but started playing up, so I'm looking at upgrading.

I am trying to install Fedora on my computer but I am getting a kernel panic at liveCD boot after boot menu. It occurs to me for F13 and F14 (all x64, F14 x86 seems to boot fine but I'm trying to host a x64 guest OS on it so I need to get the x64 version to work)
My system specs:
Dual Opteron 265
4GB RAM
Asus K8N-DL (nVidia nForce Pro 2000, BIOS 1010)
I also tried to install F14 in some other computer (which worked flawlessly) and put the HDD into the computer in question, which gave me the same kernel panic.
I run ubuntu, 2 partion, one primary for / , one for /home and ofc swap.When I run the Livecd, at the partition step I do:
-Custom
-Select my / partition to install
-When I select next I get the error "blah blah, must be probably a bug...." and system crashes.
After system crach I can't boot into Ubuntu or anything, it gets me on the "error 11 ( think is 11 ) grub> " screen.Also, I think its something with my nouveau drivers, I think i get an error when boots the LiveCD something like "fudc...". It happens really fast and I can't read it properly.I did this procedure twice to write the errors, but it happens too fast to check them out. Also, is there a way to prepare the system before installing the Fedora, to avoid these errors?
I am having trouble installing HPLIP (all versions) onto my system. When I go to configure the source code, it goes into a loop checking for a BSD install. So, to get around this I want to try and install HPLIP onto the system via a livecd. How would I go about doing this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04 from the LiveCD--smooth install, OS looks great-elegant.Now, since I have to use dial-up, I need to install additional files from the LiveCD that aren't installed by default:

How do I get these files from the CD, and make them run on the Ubuntu installation? I've checked in the UI, and see various terms I don't yet understand. Do I extract the packages? Or do I open a pgm in Ubuntu, in which I specify the path to the files on the CD?
I'm going to use an external USRobotics 5637 USB modem that is supposed to work in Linux; just need to configure Ubuntu for this. I have the ISP DNS server numbers and modem is ready. I've seen online info, but I'm stuck at this very basic step.

I've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
i want to find out the difference between installing software straight from source and from an RPM.
