General :: Installing Additional Files From Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD?
May 31, 2010
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 from the LiveCD--smooth install, OS looks great-elegant.Now, since I have to use dial-up, I need to install additional files from the LiveCD that aren't installed by default:
[LiveCD]:poolmainwwvdial wvdial_1.60.3_i386.deb
...and
[LiveCD]:poolmainwwvstreams [3 sw packages]
How do I get these files from the CD, and make them run on the Ubuntu installation? I've checked in the UI, and see various terms I don't yet understand. Do I extract the packages? Or do I open a pgm in Ubuntu, in which I specify the path to the files on the CD?
I'm going to use an external USRobotics 5637 USB modem that is supposed to work in Linux; just need to configure Ubuntu for this. I have the ISP DNS server numbers and modem is ready. I've seen online info, but I'm stuck at this very basic step.

We are about to install some RHEL5 servers for DB and web and Application servers. I've been asked to test which file systems of the following work better for disk I/O.EXT3 EXT4 JFS BtrFS and any other ones that I can find that work under RHEL the out-of-box install I have done allows me to format my volumes with EXT2/3 but not ext4 or any others. Is it possible to "install" other filesystems for use, if so how?

I've got Ubuntu ReMix 10.04 successfully running off a 4-GB JumpDrive.When I go to installing additional software packages, the package "appears" to have installed itself onto the JumpDrive and into Ubuntu Remix 10.04.But, when I properly shut it down, and come back latter ... those software packages that appeared to have installed earlier, are no longer on the JumpDrive ! Nor, do they any longer show up on the NetBook ReMix menu tree.This has happened with AbiWord / Scribus / QCad / Gwelled and several other software packages.

I have a laptop that I want to dual boot winxp and linux. I'd like to be able to run a mythtv frontend on it so that I can watch shows in my office and not lose the screen space on my regular desktop. I was thinking of three possible directions to go. I have a question to go with each though.
1.) This machine has an existing winxp install that I don't want to mess up, but is there something on a Fedora live cd that I could use to smashing that winxp install into a smaller space and repartitioning the drive? If so, I could just do an old fashion dual boot from the harddrive.
2.) I put a live install on a usb drive. If I do that, how do I install mythfrontend and make it persistant on the usb drive?
3.) I treat a usb drive like a regular hard drive and just do a normal fedora install, assuming the install sees the usb drive as a sd? device. I guess I don't have a question with this option, but I would rather avoid it since it will take a lot more space on the usb drive.

I have a permission to use several CentOS5 computers that are connected to a server where all shared programs sit. Accordingly, all Perl users for example have an identical path to Perl (e.g. /export/user/bin). The administrator suggested I'll install all the programs I need (specifically Perl and Mysql) in my personal space, and then add them to the path before the already installed ones. Accordingly, I could add/change modules without "sudo" privileges, and without changing the global setting.

I have debian Lenny as an server I would like for monitoring of some network components ( switches, printers, routers ... ) and at
/usr/share/snmp/mibs I have

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 36576 2008-12-16 18:23 BGP4-MIB.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 36959 2008-12-16 18:23 BRIDGE-MIB.txt ....
ls -l | wc -l shows 66, what means 66 differen mibs.
snmp related packages I have installed are as :
dpkg -l | grep ii | grep snmp
ii libgsnmp0 0.2.0-2.1 an SNMP library implementation based on glib and gnet
ii libsnmp-base 5.4.1~dfsg-12 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) MIBs and documentati
ii libsnmp-perl 5.4.1~dfsg-12 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) Perl5 support

ii snmp 5.4.1~dfsg-12 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) applications
ii snmpd 5.4.1~dfsg-12 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) agents
My question is, how I can install additional mibs ( for Cisco, Procurve, etc ) for other hw I could have ? What is procedure. I browsed debian package base and I could not find some more packages related to snmp that could supply more mibs.

I'm just starting to get a feel for it, and learning about the software. I can't get m4a files to play in Rhythmbox - it says it needs additional plugins, but I don't know where to find them. suggest a link for an m4a decoder plugin, or different software that can play m4a files?

I've asked this in another forum, but I'm not sure I phrased it very well. I have a desktop and a "server" at the house. The "server" is sitting across the room, with no keyboard or mouse. If I were to boot the server from a LiveCD, could I then get in with SSH and kick off the setup remotely? I'm getting "Connection refused" when trying to ssh in, so I'm guessing that the service is probably not turned on.
I checked into Reconstructor, and I think that may be the way to go, if I can figure out what I need to do. I'm thinking all I need to do is install an SSH key and start the service, then I can get into it from my desktop and proceed with the install.
Is this possible to do? Or is there a better way? I know I could lug the keyboard, mouse and monitor over to the other machine to do it, but that would mean that I couldn't do anything on my desktop (since that's where the keyboard, etc. would come from).

I managed to mess up GNOME on my ubuntu laptop. Now, I can't connect to the internet because the network manager applet is removed. Is there anyway to reinstall gnome from the livecd of ubuntu? Also, I want to uninstall GNOME and install LXDE, is there anyway to do this without uninstalling any of the applications that are installed by default with gnome, such as openoffice.org or firefox?

I was thinking of trying to install Window XP in a dual boot fashion but with the purpose of trying to configure wine to use it as it base instead of its normal setup. Only thing is Ubuntu is the sole controller of my laptop here atm and as you know installing XP will remove grub as boot controller. And while I know about SuperGrub I was wondering how, if possible,do I re-install grub from Karmic's LiveCD?

I have made a Debian minimal installer on a USB drive according to this manual: [URL] I have installed a minimal version of Debian, meaning text-only, with only the kernel, shell, filesystem, and a few programs. Now I need to install the rest of it over the internet. So here are my questions:
1. Where can I find the additional files to install?
2. Where can I find a manual that tells you how to install them? This manual doesn't say anything about that.
3. Are you supposed to install the files during the installation process, or do you get them online through the minimal Debian (using wget, etc.)?

In my CentOS Bible, written by Timothy and Christopher it refers to a one button that you can install CentOS with one button from the LiveCD, or from CentOS running from the CD and install to the hard drive? I pressed everything and nada, as most everything does not function it seems. What am I missing that may go along with preparing these Dell 2650's?

Yesterday, while upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04, the computer crashed. For this reason, when I reboot, Ubuntu doesn't recognize any longer the root folder and so on... and halts execution in a blank screen (well before the login screen).I'm currently running LiveCD and I can see the Filesystem with the root folder, the bin folder, home folder and so on....My question is How can I access the files I had in my desktop from LiveCD? I know the user and password so how can I access it?

I own a motorcycle which has a power commander unit installed. Basicaly its a computer interface unit that allows us to install/load up air/fuel ratio's (maps) and do fine tuning via a laptop or computer.
So, now that I have made the move to Linux, I need to look into making the software program function with Linux. I am assuming that the software is designed for Windows, and probably a version for Mac as well.
Is there a way I can get the program modified to run within the Linux/Ubuntu OS?? The initial error I get when I attempt to install the program is ;

Got a vps today running centos 5. The company gave me 2 ip addy's. I pinged both from my current location and it seems the ping to the 'aditional ip' is much lower. I'm in shanghai and the vps is in los angeles. The round-trip ping to the aditional ip is 190ms (not bad for 6500miles away), whereas to the default ip it is over 300ms.
Anyone know how i can configure centos to use only the aditional ip? Also, do you think there's a reason for this big change in ping? The 2 ip's only vary by the very last digit and only bye one.

I've got a laptop I use for various things. I have one SATA HD with a number of partitions on it. It looks like this.
sda2 = System Reserved (Flag=boot)
sda3 = Windows 7
sda4 = extended
sda5 = Ubuntu
sda6 = WinXP
I started off with Win7 on there and added Ubuntu. Everything went fine and Grub added Win7 and I could boot to both. Since then I had to add WinXP. That wiped out Grub which I read it would. I tried adding Grub back which was unsuccessful so I just reinstalled Ubuntu which re-installed Grub, but not Win7 doesn't boot from the menu when I select it. Since then I've been trying to add Win7 and WinXP back into Grub with zero success. In addition I add the following which did not work.
