Is it still possible to use LiveCD to boot into rescue mode and run fsck?
I just want to run fsck on my hard disk and make sure all is well.
Does fsck provide and logs or records of what it found?
Is it possible to run fsck without LiveCD?
I'm experimenting a bit with my fedora, so I need to enter rescue mode very often. Every time I want to enter rescue mode, I need to insert fedora DVD Is there a way to install rescue mode on my hard drive so I could boot into rescue mode from GRUB?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got CentOS 6 installed and am wondering if it's necessary to have installation media in order to run 'linux rescue'. (I have to do some LVM resizing and would rather do it from rescue mode than in a running system.)
What I've read about booting into linux rescue is that it seems to be necessary to have installation media and boot into that. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do it some other way, like from the grub menu? But it doesn't seem to be possible to enter 'linux rescue' from the grub command line (which I got to by typing 'c' in grub menu screen) - typing 'linux rescue' at grub command line says 'command not found'.
Maybe there's another way to do this? Or some fancy way to have loaded a rescue image or something onto my disk so I don't need installation media. There's 2 reasons why I'd like to enter linux rescue without installation media, both because my computer is very old. 1) My computer can't boot from USB, and 2) My CD/DVD tray is very unstable and keeps popping out intermittently, so I'd need to hold the tray in place during the whole LVM process and it's a real pain, and I wouldn't want to risk data corruption if the process is interrupted by my CD/DVD tray popping out.
I'm hoping there's some way - it'd also be nice to know how to do this if some urgent situation arose where I needed to enter linux rescue mode but didn't have installation media handy and it'd take to long to retrieve or create new installation media.
Background for the problem:
A. I have partitioned my WinXP LTop into:
--- WinXP NTFS partition
--- a vfat partition (mounted onto /fat32)
--- Installed F10 on ext3 virtual partition
B. I do not want install grub-loader in the Master Boot Record (that would loose my WinXP boot-loader for ever)
C. I have installed grub boot loader in the First Boot Sector
D. Now I have to boot using Rescue Mode, do:
1. dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/fat32/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
2. mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs
3. cp /fat32/linux.bin /ntfs
4. modify /ntfs/c/boot.ini and introduce the statement 'c:linux.bin="Linux"'
Problem: Im not able to do step D.2 above.
Symptom:

Observations:
* The rescue mode boots into i586 based kernel (I dont know what is the actual difference between i586 and i686 - will really appreciate if anyone can educate me about it). * The installation is only a i686 image and consequently there is *only* '/lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686' dir and *no* other dir. There is no dir as xxxx.fc10.i586.
I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I am attempting to work with adding a new hard drive with a default logical volume setup. In order to complete the task, I am instructed to use a live CD to boot the system without mounting the drives using linux rescue. I am using CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD-Release2.iso
I have reviewed the centos documentation. When the live CD boots, it starts a count down to an automatic boot. I attempt to invoke the boot options as directed by hitting the tab and adding the words
linux rescue
At the end of the line and hit return to begin the booting process.
Unfortunately, the linux rescue boot option is ignored and the system mounts the hard drive. Additionally, I have checked the boot option several times by hitting the tab a second time and the option is not displayed.
In researching the issue, I inevitably get very similar instructions like:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed ubuntu on a second hard drive.Nowhere did the fracken ubuntu installer ask my permission to over-write my mbr but that's exactly what it did.I'm booted off the rescue CD trying to restore the mbr to how centos left it (I'll add ubuntu to grub manually) but I can't boot into rescue.linux rescue results in a kernel panic suggesting I need the noapic argument. Makes sense, I needed that to install and need that in grub.linux rescue noapic boots into the installer, not rescue.How do I boot into rescue mode with the noapic kernel argument?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI burned the live version of OpenSUSE 11.3 (Gnome, 32bit) to a CD to test the compatibility of an HP Pavilion p6510f. Although Xubuntu 10.4 booted up fine, OpenSUSE did not. A message about RAID would appear (too briefly to read) and then the computer would reboot.I checked in the BIOS and found that the SATA drive has 3 modes: IDE, RAID and AHCI. The hard drive was set to RAID.
When I changed the hard drive mode to IDE, I was able to run the OpenSUSE live CD; but the change ruined my Windows installation. Windows doesn't boot under IDE or RAID mode. (I have reset the mode to RAID and am restoring the Windows installation.) Is there an option/argument that I can pass to the kernel so that OpenSUSE will work under RAID mode? (Since Xubuntu 10.4 was able to do it, I'm assuming OpenSUSE should be able to.)
I installed Fedora on my pc over Ubuntu and now Grub wont go any further than rescue mode. (Apparently grubs boot folder was on the Ubuntu partition. Now I see why a dedicated boot partition is handy.) I used VMware to install Fedora as im currently out of CDs. VMware is setup to use the Physical HDD for the primary HDD in the VM. (I made sure VMware disabled access to the windows partitions so the guest couldn't access them.)
I am in Windows 7 at the moment and am avoiding rebooting as that will basically lock me out of the only computer I have access to. I tried running the Ubuntu LiveCD to restore grub but dont know how to mount Fedoras LVM partitions. What can I do to repair grub or at least install an MBR that is capable of booting windows? I can boot floppies and cds using VMware but am not sure what to use to fix this.

Ubuntu LiveCD may work if I can mount the LVM partitions.
Actually Some one has deleted my vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5 and its backup vmlinuz5 from /boot dir i want to restore those files. i tried by "linux rescue" mode but unable to mount my dvd from RHEL5 dvd drive there is no file exist as /dev/cdrom .

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

View 4 Replies View RelatedToday it happened again: After an apparently trivial update Grub (Grub2) enters rescue mode the next time booting, not displaying any useful help whatsoever at that point. (Remember that at boot time no manual or help pages are available.) I don't know what went wrong, but ... The harddisk or partition in question is now no longer a bootable partition.
I don't want to use much time trying to sort out things, so unless someone may direct me to at better procedure, I am going to save whatever can be saved from the hd and then reinstall debian (in this case: Sqeeze) from scratch. Nothing else has in my experience ever worked before.
I have been trying to install windows for 15 days and I was finally able to do it by removing in "disk utility" the sign saying that the fedora partition is bootable... but I did it when the partition was active... It showed me a message error but i thought that it told me it wasn't abvle to do it... and now that windows is installed I cannot any more access the partition either in rescue mode and on a live cd ... what could I do to access the partition either to save all the files or to (it woiuld be the best) reinstall the grub ?

Then I updated it and I installed wireless drivers kmod-wl equivalent to my kernel version that is 2.6.35.6-45. I've a pavilion dv6 with a broadcom ach. for networking. So the next step was installing kmod-nvidia for my nvidia geforce but after rebooting my never allow me to log in! I can se the tipical blue-white progress bar loading nvidia drivers but not else!
my screen freeze itself after the progress bar became white. I would resolve by rescue mode but I've installed fc14 64 b using a usb-pen drive and I find no way to do this from live version.
I made a big mistake. While logged in as root i deleted the /bin directory by mistake. I cannot boot up now...I tried to re-install with the upgrade option...Did it partly but it does not go to the login. I tried a rescue operation and have gone into /mnt/sysimage...However I do not know how to copy my data files over the network to another computer. If I could do that it would be great...I can then backup my file and reinstall.
However I do not know how to setup the network in rescue mode..
Agter going into the network option ...It gave 2 places where I could enter the values ipv4 .and ipv6...I tried entering the old IP address in the first oprtion ........./....Its prompting for some entry to be put after the /. I think its a 3 digit input. Not sure what has to be done.with namesserver and default gateway....I have a small dlink hub and normally (when the system was running) I just needed to go into network manager and enter the machine ipaddress, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and some value for the default gateway which was not really there....It worked, i could remote connect with another computer in my LAN. How do i enter the 255.255.255.0 in rescue mode?
I (through TeamViewer) helped my mother (who is in Spain) updating her laptop to 10.10. I was of course doing this while doing other things at work, and managed to replace the Grub installation. Now the machine won't boot.
It stops in Grub Rescue.After having a look at the Grub Rescue Mode Megathread I made her type the command

My linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.
Downloaded the F10 live CD. Booted to it, got past the white, blue, and dark blue loading bar then my screen would be covered in black and white lines. No sign of the GUI except for a mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+backspace would cause the display to blink off and then come back on to the same thing. ctrl+alt+f2 would bring me to a terminal, logged in as root, but from there I couldn't do anything. startx would tell me I had x running on another screen.
hitting tab when booting the livecd and adding "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" to the boot line. That works. I get to the desktop at native res with desktop effects. Killer. I tried to install; install went flawless, rebooted to my HDD and the same issue, black and white bars. When booted to my HDD, however, ctrl+alt+f2 doesn't bring me to a terminal, it causes my monitor to go into sleep mode and my computer becomes unresponsive so I can't do anything from the command line.
Here's what I'm getting at : how do I get my installed version of F10 to do the "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" args that the livecd can do?
My machine is a home built machine I bought off of a friend. P4 2.4 ghz, GB RAM, 2 80GB HDDs, Radeon x1600.
If I turn off the quiet mode in the boot options, it does throw up some errors (e.g. SQASHFS), and then stops after "starting abrt daemon".
On an AMD Athelon. It worked fine of F9, but started playing up, so I'm looking at upgrading.
I am trying to install Fedora on my computer but I am getting a kernel panic at liveCD boot after boot menu. It occurs to me for F13 and F14 (all x64, F14 x86 seems to boot fine but I'm trying to host a x64 guest OS on it so I need to get the x64 version to work)
My system specs:
Dual Opteron 265
4GB RAM
Asus K8N-DL (nVidia nForce Pro 2000, BIOS 1010)
I also tried to install F14 in some other computer (which worked flawlessly) and put the HDD into the computer in question, which gave me the same kernel panic.
I've burned the installation media on several different types of media, and i'm getting an error after the 3 bars load (first screen). I've tried the verify and boot option, and it's fine. I'm trying Fedora 10 on a studio xps 1340. The error messageet isCE hpet increasing min_delta_ns to xxxxx nsec twice, thenForce XPAon: 0about 15 times, thenCE hpet increasing min_delta_ns to xxxxx nsec a few more times, this pattern alternates and the xxxxx keeps increasing, starting at something like 10000 and jumping by 50000 each time it reposts.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new Toshiba Satellite C650D which has AMD processor. For some rescuing, I wanted to put ubuntu live CD. Ubuntu starts with some screen but then it converts to text mode and just sit there. I have checked md5sum of the iso file I got , before burning it on the CD. After burning the image, I also checked the directory structure on the iso file and the CD. They are fine. Currently I am writing this from XP. How do I use Ubuntu Live CD.
For burning, I used infrarecorder with 'Burn Image' option. I had installed debian and win xp with the same CD , so I can't see the problem with the CD. Anyway, I tried doing this with different CD and the same problem appears.
The CD's are memorex
CD-RW 700 MB 4X multi speed.
And I don't get the ubuntu boot screen at all. Some screen with ubuntu symbol appears and then text mode with some information about the hardware and it hangs there.
I have a serious problem in booting centos 5.4 x86 as shown in the attached picture.I tried to backup before using fsck command, but I could not make a backup of damaged lvm on hard drive.First I made a rescue centos at virtualbox, and installed centos 5.4 x86 on virtual hard disk.And I attatched damaged hard drive. S I can see this damaged hard drive's lvm as attached picture.Please let me know how to backup my files and to use "fsck.ext3 --rebuild-tree using livecd".

I tried fsck from a live CD but it doesn't work.
Environment: A 32-bit kernel RHEL5.3 system running on a virtual machine. The root(/) filesystem is on an LV.
Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. After extending the LV, online resizing of the FS was not supported and the root filesystem could not be unmounted while it was in use. On rebooting, I got a kernel panic error. In runlevel 1, I couldn't run chroot, couldn't find the /etc/fstab, root FS could not be mounted, fsck did not run (tried block 31 for second copy of superblock using dd count=1 bs=4k skip=31 seek=1 if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda2), couldn't find any rpm on installation media to install unix-utils rpm. I've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
