Installed Fedora 15, ran the updates, so everything is by default, so the .bashrc file just runs the version in /etc
sftp gives me an error message too long.
I went into to the .bashrc file and commented out the call to the /etc version and I still get the sftp error.
How can this be fixed?
After customizing my .bashrc for a nice pretty shell locally I decided I wanted it to look nice remotely to I created a ~/.bash_profile in my home directory so I wouldn't have to type bash upon logging in I'd just be greeted with my colors and customizations. I placed the files on 2 remote locations and ssh'd in and worked just like it wanted it to, later that same day I tried to sftp in to one of the locations and it kept disconnecting me after I'd input my password, but I could still ssh in just fine. After trying a few suggestions from the web like [URL] with no success I decided to ask some friends. They narrowed it down to the motd and echo's in my .bashrc. Finally I asked a very experienced developer about it and so without further adue here is the .bashrc / .bash_profile

Unfortunately I forgot to mention to get it to launch the terminal with the greeting / fortune you have to have the echos uncommented in the .bashrc locally, or know more about shell scripting than I [wouldn't surprise me at all if someone is able to expand upon my bashrc and fix my minor problem] and have it not echo or execute fortune on sftp only somehow. So if you have fortune uncommented be prepared to be unable to sftp IN to the box that it is uncommented on.
i have a dell inspiron laptop lap top with windows7 os.my hardisk is 320gb capacity.now i want to install fedora as my secondary os. I tried fedora12 but instaltion terminated abnormally with the message safe reboot needed recievied signal 3. i have 20 gb unallocated space in my disk.

After creating raid 0 + 1 and rebooting, received an error message below:
Iv installed ubuntu 10.10 onto a usb 4gb pen. EVerything works fine. However I then wanted to encrypt the USB using truecrypt inside ubuntu and got an error message telling me it could not find some file. I then installed virtualbox onto the ubuntu this installed fine,i then installed windows xp and after completion clicked save the state. I then restarted ubuntu and when it loaded up again the virtualbox and windows xp had been deleted. Iv tried this twice just to make sure but same thing both times.

I used the automatic setup and accepted all default settings on a new HD. At end of installation I clicked Firefox and received a "no server" message.
The only info I found was in KDE Chapt. 17 by Lauri Watts. She says that if I have IP, gateway, submask, and dns numbers, Internet connection is easy but she tells nothing about using the numbers. I have those numbers.
How do I get online?
I have a no-proxy, static service.
Why-oh-why-oh-why would an installation end without an online connection? Or at least easy-to-find instructions to get online?

I booted fedora from an live cd not i have a problem when i want to install fedora formatting is taking vey long its already busy for 1 hour and this is te second time im trying to install fedora does it need to take this long ? I've got an unexpected fault for the second time and pressed debug but nothing is happening keeps formatting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI switched to Fedora from Ubuntu about a month ago, and I've been very happy so far. But today I started the upgrade to Fedora 15, and something isn't right. I used the preupgrade method, and the package download took a respectable 30-40 minutes, then I was prompted to reboot my machine. I did so, about 4 hours ago. It took about 2 hours to get to the point where it says it's installing the packages, and 2 hours to get to where it is as I write this, at 116 completed packages out of 1634.
I'm pretty sure this isn't normal for ANY distribution. The machine itself is about 6 months old, so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. I'm considering interrupting the upgrade and doing a clean install, but I was wondering, is there anything I can do before resorting to the clean install option?
what "Message too long" error returned by the function dn_expand means?
The function call I used is as follows:
dn_expand(poutput, poutput + output_space_used, *out_rr, output_qname, 255);
I assumed that the error was due to the difference between the 1st argument and 2nd argument, However, changing the difference to the accepted dns message size (512 bytes) or even to no difference at all did nothing to remove the error.
Further, I am trying to check the output after having first compressed a domain name using dn_comp into *out_rr. This function call is in order to check whether the compression is happening correctly.
Whenever I boot up Fedora 15 on Virtual Box, I get the message " gnome 3 could not load " and I installed all the packages needed to install Guest Additions, but even when I mounted the file, the ONLY file I could find online that was VMBoxGuestAdditions.iso or something like that, I mounted it, I tried installing, but nope, it gives me an error message that it can't. I have the latest version of VirtualBox and I've been on several forums and looked at many places but I can't fix it. I also have a problem where when I boot it up it says " the system is optimized to support 32 bit but it is currently 64 bit go here and click this to fix it " or something like that. and I can't figure out how to fix it in Virtual Box.

When I run updates I get a long list of packages for which it says 'The following package updates will NOT be installed'. I'm wondering why not?
The only thing I can think of is I followed the guide in a sticky thread in the Multimedia forum to get codecs installed, and part of that is to change the vendor of some Opensuse packages to packman.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been creating a website of late, and I've decided that I've come far enough along to get actual web development software (though gedit has served well). In Gnome, I have Bluefish, which is alright, but I also wanted something for KDE, since I also have Kubuntu 10.04 installed. I did some reading, and decided to see what all the fuss about Quanta Plus was about. I download the tar file, extract it, but when I run ./configure, it goes through a couple of steps and everything seems to be checking out okay.
Then I get an error message that says I am missing kde-config, and that I should check my KDE installation. I didn't do anything abnormal during the Kubuntu installation, so I can't imagine what I could do to check that installation. So then I go tot the INSTALL file, and try the alternative installation ./configure method, and I get an error message that says the the C compiler can't output an executable.
My level is starter with Ubuntu. Moderate experience with C.Problem starting with programming in C under Ubuntu.I have installed Anjuta IDE and made this classical program.

I've recently installed Fedora 10 on a space computer. It works fine until I tried to install Mplayer.
As i've read on a number of sites that there is a dependency problem, I went through loads of websites looking for a fix. I found nothing that would work.
Now i'm stuck with a problem that i think might be worse. If I start a .RPM I get the following message.
Now when i try to install other things it's hit and miss, I tried to install VLC and got the same message.
I've got no idea what i've done to get to this point and i don't really want to reinstall fedora 10 again.

While installing fedora 14 from DVD, during the installing process started half way, the error message appear on the screen " The file ed-1.4-2.fc14.i686.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, a corrupt package or corrupt media. Please verify your installation source. " I have download the fedora 14 iso twice the same problem i got while installing. I install fedora 10 or 11 it install successfully.

View 10 Replies View RelatedThis, in conjunction with the "If nouveau refuses to die try" instructions, has now apparently basically trashed my fresh Fedora 12 x64 installation, which I had just set up. Another couple of hours gone to waste. I installed the package that Nokia offers as leigh123linux's build instructions last rpmbuild command persistently gave errors, restarted and was left with Nouveau showing some cryptic error message and finally being presented with only the console. Then I did the "if nouveau refuses to die try" part, foolishly figuring the nVidia driver might take over. Now I am left with watching Fedora's legacy boot animation (the loading bar) and then but one USB error message, nothing else. Looks like I'll be stuck with W7 for another while.

My old keys show up just fine in the password manager, but when I attempt to open a file encrypted with one of them, I get the error: "Could not display (name of file): There is no application installed for PGP/MIME-encrypted message header files"

"org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist.
Only option under message is close button. I'm using Fedora 14 xfce 32bit live CD. The install seems to carry on normally until done but then when I check the partitions I've setup I seem to only have the origonal uneditted default partitions.
