Fedora :: Trashed Fresh F12 X64 Installation - USB Error Message

Mar 1, 2010

This, in conjunction with the "If nouveau refuses to die try" instructions, has now apparently basically trashed my fresh Fedora 12 x64 installation, which I had just set up. Another couple of hours gone to waste. I installed the package that Nokia offers as leigh123linux's build instructions last rpmbuild command persistently gave errors, restarted and was left with Nouveau showing some cryptic error message and finally being presented with only the console. Then I did the "if nouveau refuses to die try" part, foolishly figuring the nVidia driver might take over. Now I am left with watching Fedora's legacy boot animation (the loading bar) and then but one USB error message, nothing else. Looks like I'll be stuck with W7 for another while.

SUSE :: Trashed OS (Fatal Error) Bad Primary Partition 2

Feb 6, 2011

So I was creating a bootable USB stick with Unetbootin and accidentally selected my hard drive instead of the flash drive. My system is still running but I'm pretty sure I hosed it and it's not going to boot again if I restart. When I run cfdisk on my boot drive it says "FATAL ERROR: Cannot open disk drive". When I run cfdisk without a drive specification it says "FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 2: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder". I think this problem is probably not specific to OpenSUSE but I figured this is as good a place to start as any.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Locked Files From Trashed Installation

Jul 2, 2010

I have a laptop that I have been running 64bit lucid on after some problems with NFS Samba and SMB the installation got a bit trashed after some workarounds I removed nautilus completely and rebooted and got the looping login screen........ then I tried a suggestion to purge gdm but that left me with a blank grey screen and a mouse pointer. X11 has failed so I have no graphics

I can login properly to the drive from the terminal and can access my drive contents... I cannot load dolphin or nautilus from the terminal. So I have booted from a live cd and have moved some of my data to another partition but some is locked to the owner (me). How can I get my locked data opened so I can copy or move it to another drive, so I can perform a fresh install.

I am in the process of settign up a home server under FC14. The installation recognized both NICs, one as Intel Gigabit and the other as a Realtek Semiconductor as it should be. But when trying to start eth0 (Realtek) I get the following error message:

I am quoting form the description "Being a gully integrated card, no external plug packs are required and cabling is simplified to just an ADSL line connection. The need to purchase an extra ethernet card is also eliminated, as yjis features is build into the card. The onboard Ethernet controller (RTL8139) makes the modem appear to the OS as a standard network card. Thus the Viking can be used with almost any modern O/S without the need for special drivers. This includes Windows, Linux, Solaris, xBSD, etc.." setting ACPI=off in GRUB.conf does not fix the issue

Installation :: Grub Error 17 After Fresh Install

Jan 27, 2010

I have an odd problem. I custom-built a workstation:
MSI Speedster 1 mobo
2x Opteron 2352
4x DDR2 ECC 4GB
3x 150GB WD Raptor, hardware RAID 0
1x 2TB WD Green, standalone

I had Linux Mint 8 installed, but before putting the machine to real use decided to toss Windows 7 on there to see how it worked. Now I am attempting to put Mint 8 back on to get everything set up. There have been no hardware changes since I had Mint installed before.

I can successfully install, but when I reboot I get a Grub error 17. The partition table looks like:
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
...
2TB /backup /ext3

Grub is installed to (hd0), which is the 450GB hardware RAID. It does not make a difference when I run the installation (and then reboot) with the 2TB drive disconnected. Thinking maybe the new ext4 format was messing with Grub, I tried:
200MB /boot ext2
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
And installed again and rebooted. No dice. I'd guess Grub has issues recognizing the hardware raid, except it worked before

I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

SUSE :: Error In Compiling Kernel After Fresh Installation

Oct 21, 2010

I am trying to perform a patch on the current kernel version that was included in SLES SP1 and do a compile of the kernel. However, after installing the new kernel and rebooting, I got a "Waiting for device" error. I tried just compiling the kernel after a fresh installation of SLES SP1 on a physical and virtual machine and got the same problem. When I was doing make rpm, I got errors something like (can't remember but it was something like not in gzip format, file format not recognized and exec format error). Also, what I noticed when performing mkinitrd was that there were errors like the following:

ERROR: modinfo :could not open /var/tmp/kernel-2.6.32.120.7paemod-root/lib/modules/2.6.32.12-0.7-pae-mod/kernel/drivers/char/agp/ali-agp.ko: No such file or directory

The files include others such as amd-k7-agp.ko, ati-agp.ko, efficeon-agp.ko and others. There are also 2 files in the usb direcotry that has this problem. This happened even after a fresh installation. What I did was the following:

cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make menuconfig
make rpm
mkinitrd
vim /boot/grub/menu.lst

Fedora :: Httpd Error 98 On Fresh Install?

May 15, 2011

Sometimes httpd (the apache web server) fails to start and displays an error (98: Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80). This happens even when no other service is listening on port 80, as evident from the output of "lsof -i :80" and "netstat -A inet -lnp". This is due to a configuration file mixup. Both /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and /etc/httpd/conf.d/system-config-httpd.conf contain the directive "Listen :80". If you comment out the "Listen 80" in /etc/httpd/conf.d/system-config-httpd.conf, httpd will again start.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Install Of 8.10 Over 9.10 Causes Grub 'no Such Disk' Error

Jan 27, 2010

I have a dual boot machine (Win XP + Ubuntu 9.10 on separate physical drives) which was working fine. I now want to replace the Ubuntu 9.10 with LinuxMCE which is based on Ubuntu 8.10. Using the LinuxMCE install disk, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 over the top of Ubuntu 9.10 (repartitioning the whole drive). On reboot, I now get a Grub "no such disk" error. I have run the boot info script which produced the following RESULT.txt:

Code:

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks for
(UUID=6a59ab9e-041f-41e2-b27c-02b8ada4c1af)/boot/grub.
=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb and looks on the same drive
in partition #1 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdc

Ubuntu / Apple :: Fresh Installation - Receiving Sync Error?

Feb 17, 2010

I'm trying to run Mac OSX Leopard + Ubuntu on my Macbook White 4,1. I've read multiple user guides, but for some reason it screwed up when I hit the partition button on rEFit. I received the 'gpsync' (sp?) error. I couldn't delete any of my partitions or make them go back to normal... As we speak I'm wiping my hard drive. I would really LOVE to start over FRESH. With Mac OSX, then to install Ubuntu. How can I go about installing Ubuntu on my Macbook without getting the sync error, and screwing up my partitions. Yes I read the user guide, and yes.. I did it step by step and still received the errors. I would love to fool around on Ubuntu, but the errors were stopping me.
