OpenSUSE :: Long List Of " The Following Package Updates Will Not Be Installed"?

When I run updates I get a long list of packages for which it says 'The following package updates will NOT be installed'. I'm wondering why not?
The only thing I can think of is I followed the guide in a sticky thread in the Multimedia forum to get codecs installed, and part of that is to change the vendor of some Opensuse packages to packman.

I am running openSUSE 11.4 KDE 4.6.5 on my desktop AMD64. Just added R47 repo in order to upgrade KDE 4.6.5 to 4.7. However, after running zypper up I saw lots of packages not being updated.code...
apt-cache show <package> shows also it's dependencies.yum info <package> does not show dependencies, but it obviously know them.How to ask yum for dependencies of specified package?
I was working on my flash drive install of Ubuntu, when I squashfsed my /usr. Long story short, I some how ended up with a working /usr, but with a few packages marked as installed, but not having its components installed (emacs). When I try to remove emacs (emacs23-nox), it gives me numerous errors about files (all relating to emacs) not existing (all in /usr). Thus my questions are as follows:
1) Is there a way to force the removal without it caring about missing packages?
-OR-
2) Is there a way to reload which packages are installed by checking which files exist, etc?
I would like the updater applet to offer updates other than security fixes from the base repos. For example I would like to be notified automatically about updates for VLC and Chrome. How do I do that?
There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?
Since applying a number of updates using the online update tool in Yast, the online update tool can no longer contact the software repositories which were configured in Yast.If i browse to the URL which is configured within the software repo config tool, I can see the updates & folders fine in Firefox.Zypper seems to do the same thing & just sits there if I do zypper update.I see a number of other people in this forum have had the same problems, any ideas as I couldn?t find a resolution?
I read a few threads about updating packages in opensuse 11.3, and about switching to a repository, but I still don't understand a few things. On earlier versions of opensuse I was used to set the repository priorities in an order that was convenient for me, and when I did an update, the vendor changed if needed. Now, vendor change is not allowed by default, and I don't understand the right way to handle repositories, and updates. I found out that in Software Managment there is an option to allow vendor change, but I'm not sure that's the right way.
im very slowly migrating across from Windows to OpenSuse. However i have a few quarms about the system and how it works.
1. Add / Remove programs.Is there a way to see a list of software that you have installed and is it quite easy to "un-install" it? I have installed Compiz and then when i went to remove it i could see 10ish items called Compiz. I was confused about how to uninstall it all from my system successfully without getting rid of something i need.
2. Software packages.I have tried to install packages from the OpenSuse site and I'm not sure what has happened to it. I have installed Virtual box from here and nothing has happened. I cannot search or even see Virtualbox anywhere. What im wanting to do is run OpenSuse as my Primary OS and then run Windows 7 on VB so i can continue to work as normal under it.
3. OpenSuse in a Microsoft domain.Is this possible? At work we use a Microsoft domain but is there a way i can install the Admin tools for OpenSuse so i can continue to work as normal by for example using Active Directory etc etc.
4. Device Manager?In Windows you have the "Device manager" a very handy tool that tells you what is on your computer, what drivers are missing and need installing etc. I can't see anything like this in Suse. Im not sure if all my hardware is installed once i am in Suse like Graphics cards, sound card, network card, card reader, and anything else that is on my PC etc.
5. Partitioning. Can someone give me a good description on how OpenSuse partitions your hard drive. I have seen it gives you a "swap?" drive etc but unsure as to what this is.
I have just made a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and after installing all updates, GDM is taking a long time (about one minute) to come up after a clean boot, resulting in a regular console prompt.
If I issue "sudo service gdm start" it does come up promptly.
What can I do? Where can I see startup logs to try and identify any problems?
The image disk boots OK and comes to the screen that gives the option to try or install. I opted for the "try Ubuntu" once, but got a long list of i/o errors. Tried the install option, and same thing. The install did get to an apparent Ubuntu background, but never any further prompts. Is the iso bad? I'm trying to install on a Dell Inspiron 7500. Currently has Win2000 loaded.
Recently I have installed DockbarX and Cardapio. After installation they are supposed to be found in the Add to Panel items, but both of them are not there.I can run them directly without any problem. Is there anything else I should do manually? I have tried pkill gnome-panel to restart the panel as well.
I was on a car trip earlier, but we were stuck in traffic. The stop-go stop-go kind of BS. I pulled out my 9.10 laptop and figured I'd scan for wifi networks and see how good America was at securing their networks. (I work in IT support so it's one of those things I preach to no end yet people rarely listen).
I was using wifi radar, and picked up a truckload of networks every time we'd stop. But something didn't sit well with me. When I click on the network manager icon in the top gnome panel to see what networks were available, it never seemed to refresh.
Example - the first 5 networks I saw were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. We would stop-go more and more and miles later when I'd see more networks in the area show up in wifi radar, yet hit my network manager, I'd STILL see networks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and not 30, 31, 32, 33, etc like I expected.
What kind of refresh time or cache or whatever does network manager have? I just didn't understand why I was seeing the original networks from 15 minutes/miles ago and it never seemed to update.
I'm on OpenSuSE 11.1, and since I needed some features of Firefox 3.5.x I manually updated via 1-Click intall to 3.5.8. Now the Updater-Applet signals a security repo update for FF 3.0.18 which is no longer installed since replaced by the 3.5.8, and I see no way to get rid of the red warning sign; this is very bad since now I get no longer informed about other new updates to really installed packages ....
I understand there is a file that stores the repositories' information, but I can't find it!Is there a way I can create a list of what applications have been installed?The idea is that if I am running a backup, finding a way to save the repository list and applications installed so if I am upgrading, or fixing a borked system by re-installing Fedora, I could copy the repo list back, and run the applications list like ode:yum install <cat apps.txt?> and get all of the applications I've installed via Yum without having to remember them all?Is there anything else, outside of /home, I should look at backing up? SELinux settings?
I'm trying to do a find /photos/* -type f -mtime +365 to find all my pictures that are over a year old, but I keep getting argument list too long. How can I view what all the results are, even if it just dumps it to a file that I have to open?
I have been having a recurring issue for a number of weeks now. Everytime Software Update appears it says there are updates so I click update, enter my root password and then I get this error message:
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: package postfix-2.6.1-2.1.i586 is not installed Now that package is not mentioned on the list for me to untick so I have no idea where it's coming from. It happens each time and everytime the updates don't get done. They just stay on the list and new ones keep getting added. The list is getting pritty big now
I have down loaded the .rpm for Xiphos (Bible study software) but it won't install. I get the following message; Package/tmp/xiphos-3.1-3.1 x86_84.suse111.rpm could not be installed. Subprocess failed. Error RPM failed:error Failed dependencies and then gives a list as long as my forearm. When an installed package name appears red text in YaST, is it because the repository wasn't kept --- as in one-click remove the repository after install?
when ever i try to install updates i get shown an error & the updates stop the error i get says "librpmio.so.0 is needed by package abrt-1.0.3-1.fc12.i686 (updates) librpm.so.0 is needed by package abrt-1.0.3-1.fc12.i686 (updates)"
I need to delete all *.trc files that are older than 30 days and I am getting a "Argument list too long" error. There are other files that should not be deleted which is why I am using the "*.trc" and newer files need to be kept as well. I have seen other postings but they do not cover both of the conditions. Below are 2 of the many attempts at doing this but I cannot get this to work.
I was wondering if anyone knew how to get long package descriptions which searching for packages with aptitude.my search results have package descriptions that are truncated even if the terminal is expanded to allow longer one-line package descriptions.
I'm looking to use a vnc client so I can connect to my other windows machine. I thought i'd use realVNC as I've used it before from windows and it seems to do the job... the problem is that when I try and install it I get the following message: Package /temp/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm could not be installed.

Is it a problem that I'm trying to install this on a 64 bit Suse 11.1 installation? Can anyone recommend a solution (I can't find the package to install), or any other good vnc clients I can easily use?
