General :: Root Of Previously Installed System Not Found Getting Message When Upgrading?
Jul 4, 2010
I am trying to Upgrade from Fedora 12 to Fedora 13 using Preupgrade. My system downloads the the Upgrade and tries to install it but returns a message "Root of the previous system not found". I would really like to fix this problem but dont know how.
I'm having a problem going from F12>F13 using preupgrade with a wired internet connection. The current F12 installation is up to date. The upgrade crashes with the "the root for the previously installed system was not found". I've also tried upgrading using YUM and was also unsuccessful. Has anyone run into this problem with this upgrade?
How do you determine the source and version of a device driver in your linux box? (The wifi driver, for instance.) In windows you can find that info using "device manager". I suppose there is some corresponding tool in linux.
I can use Ubuntu from my flash drive, but I want to install it in a partition alongside windows. When I try to do this, I come to an 'allocate drive space' window, but whatever I do I get the error message: 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I just don't know what this means, or what to do next. I'm loathe to ditch windows, and I don't want to have to use a flashdrive all the time.
I have installed a new Linux distro (just to test it) on my usb memory stick, and I'm trying to run it. I don't know if what I did is correct so far, anyways here's what I have:
Grub on sda (internal hard disk) sdb with no boot loader (memory stick)
In grub I've been doing: root (hd1,0) kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.37-sabayon root=/dev/sdb1 vga=normal initrd /initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.37-sabayon boot
This seems to work (as opposed to when I forgot the root= parameter, which almost destroyed my linux on sda1 ), but during startup the system complains about no root bein found on /dev/sdb1. I also tried (hd1,0), but it didn't change much.
I'm sure I can boot an OS from usb on my computer, so doesn anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
You know the system mail message that Pat leaves root welcoming them to Slackware and other things.here are some good things in there. I wanted to know how I could copy that so other user on the system could read it in a text file or something
When I was upgrading my system (ubuntu server edition) today from 8.10 to 10.04 (of course in small steps: upgrade version after version) everything seemed running smoothly. But when I restarted it, it gave an error message: Gave up waiting on root device. Screenshot of error and grub menu attached. I've read some information about it and applied the possible workaround given here: [URL]. My system is very old and so is the HDD: it uses an IDE connector. Typing 'exit' doesn't work either.
I faced a problem while installing ubuntu 10.04 on mylaptop;i downloaded the ubuntu from ubuntu official site. Problem: message coming that no media device is found for live file system. My Laptop configuration : 2.2 ghz core 2 duo processor, 320gb hdd in this matter and can let me know me how can i install ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop.
I am using xp and ubuntu 9.10 in dual boot mode.Previously when i formatted my xp and reinstalled it the mbr was changed and this the grub did'nt loaded up. Well i am out of that problem but now i want to format the xp from my linux i.e i don't want any other os in this hard disk apart from linux (ubuntu 9.10) so is it possible to format the xp from linux.
will it affect the mbr ? and if yes then wat is the solution for it ? also the drive containing xp should be available for my storage purpose afterwards.
In the midst of an epic, hours-long saga of attempting to reinstall Kubuntu 11.04 and get my GRUB menu back in order to dual boot with Windows 7 (I accidentally lost the rambling thread I previously typed, so I'm not going to even tell the back story unless prompted), my installation progress bar seems to be sitting at a solid 86%, reading "Restoring previously installed packages...", something I've never seen before. It's sat there for two hours, not moving a pixel. Is there anything I can do at this point? I've been up for hours trying to do this, and I'm about ready to give up on Kubuntu and even seeing my Windows system again.
I am trying to install the Ubuntu 11.04 in my IBM t42 laptop after the HD crashed. I am trying to install it into a USB drive from another USB drive. Everything went on smoothly until it got stuck at a point where it shows the following message: Restoring previously installed packages... And the progress bar is not moving a bit for almost one and half hour.
I am getting an error message at step 5 of 8 in the installation process. I am using Ubuntu LiveCD. The caption of the error is 'No root file system' and the message itself says 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I enclose a screenshot of this. I had also problems with booting Ubuntu and Windows after installing Ubuntu to an external hard disk so I probably have to also create a new boot menu (may be it is differently called, 'grub' possibly, I am not really sure).
[URL]You show how to remove a package and it's dependencies. You show how to remove the configuration from the package you are currently uninstalling. You don't show how to remove the configuration data from a package and all of it's dependencies. Why?
I have two problems. I installed a RHEL variant (scientific linux) on an already dual boot system with ubuntu and vista.
It replaced GRUB with (I think an older) GRUB version and to add to that I cannot see my ubuntu ditro anymore. is there a way of reinstalling the GRUB that came with ubuntu then adding the RHEL distro to it?
my second problem is that I cannot figure out how to enable wake on lan in scientific linux (RHEL). on ubuntu I would just write a small script and update all runlevels to run it at startup. what is the alternative on redhat?
Started slackpkg upgrade-up and went to bed. Woke up to find the power had gone out during the night. The computer booted up, but displayed a message that said something to the effect of, "Error occurred during root file system check. You will be given the option of doing maintenance......"I can get to a command prompt, but regardless of what I do a message pops saying it can't find libblkid.so.1
I have a HP laptop that I have had Windows Vista on for about two years. I am soon going to switch it over to Ubuntu. My question is can you safely use the Ubuntu installation process to delete the Windows partition along with all the programs and files it stores on the hard drive or should you first uninstall Windows manually and then, with a essentially blank computer, install Ubuntu?
I am running Ubuntu 11. 04 on my 160gb HD, which is making funny noises and could be on its way out. I have in my PC a 500gb HD on which I would like to install 11.04, but, althogh the dis has installed OK on my laptop, and on my 160HD on my desktop, it will not install on my 500gbHD, everytime I try I get the message "no root file system is defined, please correct this from the partitioning menu"

I need to use a pendrive with the Slackware 13.0 and I've tried a lot of things I've found at the internet but unfortunately they didn't work. It's not possible to use graphical interface because some reasons. So the problem need to be solved by command line.
When I use "lsusb" command, I can see the pendrive.
However, when I try these:
I got the following message: "Module usb-ohci not found" and "Module usbcore not found"
How can I deal with these problem? Because I guess without these module loaded it's not possible to mount the pendrive. Is it right?
i am using red hat linux 5.0 when i start my computer it shows me the message ofINIT:No inittab file foundEnter run level:i dont what to enter here if anybody know then
Recently I bought a Toshiba NB100 from a family friend. All was going well until I installed some updates and now when I try to unmute my speakers I get this error message pop up.....
"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found"
I have downloaded Ubuntu from a CD and burned it using Infrarecorder. When I tried to boot my netbook(Samsung N 140 with Win XP OS preloaded), it gives error message .i have tried the process several times and spent lot of time but to no avail.
I am having a prolbem with my ubuntu 9.10 operating system. Is there anyway I can roll back the setting and files that I deleted previously without totaly reinstalling the system.
This borders on stackoverflow/superuser, but I guess it's a simple installation problem.I've installed python-twisted on my ubuntu 10.04 server, but it can't be found. This is what I get when I try to import something:
>>> from twisted.internet import reactor Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 1, in [code]....
I've installed the package through apt-get.That way the module is installed in this folder: /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/twisted with an __init__.py file. When I try to use python setup.py install (on the download from the site) it installs it to /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/twisted, but it also does not find it there.
I installed a game (Shredder 11) using Wine on my Ubuntu system. The installation seemed to go well, including the directx part, but when I want to run the game, I can't find it anywhere. It's not in Applications -> Wine, it's not on Wine's C: drive, and I even tried a search "find / -name shredder", which came up empty. I tried to install it again, but according to the installation program it is already installed! (It asked me if I wanted to modify, repair, etc..).
I am having redhat 5 linux machine running on my windwos x in vmware workstation. Today i was installing oracle software in redhat 5 after editing the bash profile for the oracle user i got the following messages

I hope this is posted in the right forumI have a dual boot ubuntu 10-4 and windows vista each on a separate 500 GB drive.nt to install Windows 7 in place of vista but I understand that there are some issues with grub 2 if vista and linux are already installed. Also can it be done from within Vista as an upgrade without doing a complete reinstall.I also wondered if installing windows 7 as a virtual box would be a better option.only have a few programs that I need to run in windows but I do use them regularly.
