Fedora Installation :: Can't Type Linux Askmethod At Boot Prompt

Aug 25, 2010

It disappears too fast! I'm using the netinstall spin of the Fedora 13 x64 disk. As far as I know, I still need to tell it to load Anaconda from the network. Is that correct? Anaconda loads from the CD, but I would prefer to use the downloaded image. Should I just let Anaconda go through its paces then tell it where I downloaded the image to on my network?

The documentation is woefully inadequate when it comes to using the netinst spin (yes, I am already thinking about providing help on the install docs based upon my experiences).

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Error / Failed To Find Boot Disk

Sep 1, 2010

I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error, then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself. Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

Installation :: Boot Error Kernel Panic Can`t Boot Cdusb

Sep 2, 2010

i used dual boot system (xp + ubuntu 10.04) and decided to replace them with jolicloud os and then it started In about 86% of jolicloud install it showed me error of hdd partition. I tried different versions of partion type, used also option to install on entire hdd - none of my tries actually worked (also with many hdd formating tries) so I was able to use only usb as live user for Jolicloud, and i burned ubuntu iso on disk - on boot up showed boot up error, i checked BIOS and everything seemed to be ok with boot order. So after many tries i took my old Gutsy Gibon 7.10 live cd. I first updated it with LTS version (8.04 Hardy Heron) and after that I updated it to 10.04 but it seemed to not finish when i saw some error in terminal and installer was exiting 13 minutes before finish then it had kernel panic - fuuuuck! After that i tried to download small versions of linux like Austrumi and puppy linux , but it showed me boot error or cd didnt even open install dialog without showing boot error.

Fedora Installation :: Syslinux 3.75: Could Not Find Kernel Image

Jul 5, 2009

I am currently running Fedora 10 XFCE on an Acer Aspire 1 (1.6ghz atom, 1.5gb ram, 8gb ssd). I am trying to install Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE via USB stick (Kingston 4gb) and am having no luck. I downloaded the .iso via bittorrent. If I use liveusb-creator: .iso passes checksum, installs boot image, installs syslinux, claims it's complete. When I try to boot, or simulate booting with qemu, I get the message "Could not find kernel image: linux" If I use

Code:

# livecd-iso-to-disk /home/jorge/downloads/Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE/Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE.iso /dev/sdb1

it says that the .iso passes checksum, installs live image, updates boot config file, and setup USB stick as a live image. Once again though, when I try to boot, or simulate booting with qemu, I get the same message "Could not find kernel image: linux"

Red Hat / Fedora :: PXE Boot Kernel Image Format ?

Feb 17, 2010

Ive been trying to PXE boot a XEN kernel image in gzip format, and I was getting Invalid or corrupt kernel format error. Ive seen that other kernel images having a file type of Linux kernel x86 boot executable RO-rootFS are bootable. (both are bootable using grub anyhow).

Is there any way to convert the b/n the formats, or any other solution?

I was booting a Virtualbox instance, again I guess that shouldn't matter because pxelinux loads from tftp properly, but it doesn't even proceed to load the kernel. I think the issue here is with the image format itself rather than what it contains, or where it runs.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot After Accidently Removing Kernel Image

Apr 19, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my laptop. Its a dual boot with XP, have been using ubuntu/xp for a while now..Till now i always used to remove older kernel images after ubuntu update, then update grub and do "sudo apt-get autoclean" never had any problem at all.i skipped the second step, i removed the old kernel image and did "Autoclean" on apt-get but forgot to update grub.

Now after i have reboot, when grub loads i can see only 2 "Memtest" lines in grub list and 1 "windows xp" line.the "Linux kernel generic" line is missing. I can boot in xp (have done just that to post this) but since there is no line in grub list to boot into Ubuntu, cant boot in Ubuntu. Is there any option, something i can do at "Grub" to boot into Ubuntu?

Fedora Installation :: Boot Prompt On F11 Live Cd?

Jul 30, 2009

I'm trying to install F11 in my new laptop [URL] and I'm unfortunately about to give up, but I want to give this option. What I want to do is use the live cd (on a usb stick) to boot on a text-only session. Supposedly the way to do that is type "linux text" on the boot prompt but the problem is that I can't even get there. After booting I get the grub menu with two options: boot, and verify and boot. Hitting esc doesn't bring me to the boot prompt. I can get to the grub menu, but I'm not sure what to do from there. And I can edit the boot and kernel options, but I'm not sure whether that will allow me to log in a text-only session.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Can't Find Menu.lst / Can't Boot Kernel

Feb 10, 2010

I seem to have determined a few other things about my "only gets as far as a GRUB command line" problem:To recap, sda3 (GRUB hd0,2) is the main Linux partition; sda9 (GRUB hd0,8) is the boot partition.GRUB is 0.92.Installation was from an 8.04LTS live CD (at least, that's what the envelope says it is)/"/boot/grub" (i.e., "/grub" on sd9/hd0,8) contains a "menu.lst" file. I modified it (had to do a "sudo gedit" from a command line!) to (1) comment out the line that hides the boot menu, (2) change the timeout from 3 seconds to 90, and (3) add a menu line based on my succesful manual IPL of DOS.

It still boots to a GRUB command line. If I do a "configfile /grub/menu.lst," a boot menu comes up. DOS will successfully IPL, but Linux still gets a "no setup signature found," (ditto for "recovery mode"), which suggests either a bad kernel, or a kernel that's too big for the GRUB to handle. Why would it be finding its way to grub, but not finding the boot menu file? Why would the live CD come up just fine, yet the GRUB and kernel it installs fail?

Slackware :: Use Alternate Kernel From USB Stick Boot Prompt?

May 14, 2010

After using slackpkg to update to -current on a new slack(32) install I was greeted with kernel panic "can't mount root fs" on reboot.

It was looking in the wrong place. I thought I answered yes and slackpkg would run lilo for me when it was done with the upgrade but perhaps I misunderstood.

I had my handy dandy USB boot stick so I set the bios and booted from USB. OK fine, I pointed to the correct location (hda1) and voila.

a 64bit kernel... The machine in question is a 2004 vintage celeron notebook

To my question: Is there a way I can point the loader to another kernel?

One last piece of the puzzle, the dvd drive is bad and I don't (yet) have a PXE server or even another linux box.

Fedora Installation :: Boot Prompt Information Read Automatically From Isolinux.cfg Without User Intervention?

Oct 4, 2009

building an install cd or dvd media that will automatically install the Linux software on a client pc. There is no network connectivity so the client can only be loaded with Linux from CD or DVD media. The crux of the matter is that I can not automatically install the Linux software on client WITHOUT typing linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg at the boot prompt.

I want to avoid any user prompts and just have the software install with the RPMS that I need for this client pc at the boot prompt. Actually, when the boot prompt commences, I would like the software install to start with no user intervention. I've tried several different methods in isolinux.cfg, but the OS always wants boot prompt for the cdrom. Can the boot prompt information be read automatically from the isolinux.cfg with out user intervention? I'm looking for the same behavior as a LIVE CD that kicks off with no boot prompts after a few seconds. Here's a copy of my isolinux.cfg

default linux
prompt 1
timeout 600
display boot.msg
F1 boot.msg
F2 options.msg

Debian Installation :: Get Grub2 To Boot Up Properly But "xputs" Error Pops Up And Drops To The Recovery Prompt

May 4, 2011

I switched over from Ubuntu because I realized Ubuntu sucks now (lol), but anyways... Now I'm trying to get Grub2 to boot up properly, but this "xputs" error pops up and drops me to the recovery prompt. I tried the grub-install dev/sda and all it did was recognize my Windows 7 OS (as Vista) and added it to the bootloader list and didn't fix the "xputs" issue.

I heard that doing a chroot is the most effective solution. Forgive me, but I don't know what "chroot" means or how effective it is. I can specify more information about where the OS is if needed. I have the boot flag set to the Debian OS at the hd(0,5) or sda5 I think, and Windows is at sda1 (I think). I just want to make sure I can fix this without damaging Windows, and I'll try to get more information.

Right now, I can only get into Windows or Debian with UBCD and Grub2 Super Disk and I know that sometimes Parted Magic could orderly mount the disks differently, so I don't know if it was sdaX or sdbX, but probably sdaX. I'll check again.
