Fedora Installation :: Take The 686MB 32bit Iso Image And Put It On A 2GB Usb Drive And Boot / Install?

Feb 5, 2011

i have been working with computers since the age of 11 "22 now" and have taught myself everything i know, from computer repair & networking to Web design, music production and Graphics design, using programs like photoshop, dreamweaver, sony acid, i learned it all myself, anyways that's just a little insight!!!

OK so here is my problem, i have an OLD P4 2.8 GHZ PC with 512MB ram, last year i was able to burn i believe fedora 9 to a CD and install it on this PC before i removed the drive to use as an external drive. "Dont know where the CD went"

I just recently purchased a 40GB hard drive and am looking to reinstall Fedora 14 on this P4 PC, i want to use this PC as a HTPC just for internet, ..... and stream videos, maybe some internet games etc etc, my problem is my main PC cant burn any cd/dvds due to the Drive's being burned out from burning xbox games at 4x on a regular basis, the PC i want to install Fedora on only accepts CD's and even then it barely reads anything!!

Now that you know my situation i want to know if i can take the 686MB 32bit iso image and put it on a 2GB usb drive and boot/install it to the HD that way on my old P4 PC, i want Fedora 14 as my main desktop, no partitions or walk arounds. If this helps the mobo on that OLD pc with the P4 is a p4vmm2 v5 i believe the p4 is 2.8ghz, ram is 512mb and i was able to install a 64mb nivida card agp 4x over the stock 32mb agp card it came with!

Last year windows xp was sketchy on it, i installed i think Fedora 9 and it ran great, but at that time it was a 120GB maxtor ide, and i decided to use it as an external drive for my main pc to back up alot of goodies, in the end the drive just randomly stopped working and just a few faint clicking sounds before it died. The current hard drive i will be installing on this P4 P4VMM2 mobo is a 40GB Seagate 7200. In the end do you think i can do a HD install from a USB stick with this P4VMM2 MOBO with a 40GB Seagate 7200 HD.

Fedora Installation :: Create Boot Floppy

Nov 21, 2010

A while ago I made the jump from Mandriva to Fedora. I am very pleased with Fedora, but some things do not seem to be as easy as with Mandriva. Maybe I just got to find my way around and am not aware there are packages that will do what I want, so I think it is a good idea to ask here..Well - I have a multi-boot system. There are a few partitions to test out different Linux versions (like specialised music distro's with low-latency kernels). As a result the MBR gets overwritten by other installs now and then.In Mandriva it was possible to create a simple boot disk without any images - just a "link" or "jump" to vmlinuz etc. on the root partition from the main Linux system. I think only the MBR part was written on the floppy. It was very easy done in the control centre by choosing fd0 in stead of hda as boot medium.

This disk whas a life saver if the MBR was overwritten by another OS intall. I just put in the floppy and boot from that floppy strait into the standard grub menu and so I was able to re-create grub (by doing the same process but pointing to hda in stead of fd0 as boot medium).

Is there a way to create the same simple boot disc under Fedora 14?

Fedora :: Create An ISO Image Out Of A Directory From Command Line?

Feb 7, 2010

I am implementing a strategy to organize my data among the several machines I work with and thought that getting some ISO images out of it could be a good idea because that way data would be 'read only' thus allowing for easier synchronization.

At first I thought of using the "dd" command to create the ISO out of a directory, but it fails code...
So, I have two questions:

Is the ISO 'format' capable of storing complex directory structures with long filenames (pretty much as any Linux filesystem does), or are there some inherent limitations?

Supposing the ISO format is not constrained, which command would allow me to create an ISO file out of a directory?

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Bootable System Image With ClamAV Or Similar Installed?

Jul 28, 2011

All of my PCs are set up to either run Ubuntu directly, or are dual boot Ubuntu and some variant of Windows. One of the things I like about this is that in the rare instances that I get a virus I can simply boot into Ubuntu and run ClamAV to remove the virus from there.

I have a friend who recently picked up a nasty virus and we are having a hard time getting his machine to boot at all without all sort of strange behaviors. Under that scenario I can't trust Wubi to work correctly. Soo....

Is it possible for me to create a bootable CD, DVD or USB drive from my machine? I'd like to use my machine because I can update the virus definitions before I create the image and then use that to clean his machine.

I can see all of the data in the partition and everything. dd_rescue reported that there were no errors. Now, I have a fresh HDD, and I copied the image that I created with Gparted, and turned the boot flag on. I turn my system on, and all I get is a flashing cursor in the corner of the screen.I get the feeling that this would be easy for a seasoned user, but I'm not sure where to go. I originally got some information about cloning partitions here: [URL] But, it doesn't tell you how to reload the image after you make it.

Red Hat / Fedora :: PXE Boot Kernel Image Format ?

Feb 17, 2010

Ive been trying to PXE boot a XEN kernel image in gzip format, and I was getting Invalid or corrupt kernel format error. Ive seen that other kernel images having a file type of Linux kernel x86 boot executable RO-rootFS are bootable. (both are bootable using grub anyhow).

Is there any way to convert the b/n the formats, or any other solution?

I was booting a Virtualbox instance, again I guess that shouldn't matter because pxelinux loads from tftp properly, but it doesn't even proceed to load the kernel. I think the issue here is with the image format itself rather than what it contains, or where it runs.
