General :: Kernel Panic In 64bit Arch Linux After Kernel Recompile - 2.6.35-rc3

Jun 15, 2010

I have recompiled a few kernels, but all on 32bit systems so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Running Arch Linux 64bit, most recent version.

Kernel Output:

Code:

My first thoughts was that it might be my grub bootloader configuration, so had a big play around with that but it didn't fix it. Also made sure support was built for filesystems. However almost all that Fstab mounts are ext3 anyway, and certainly the root and /boot are. Now thinking it may be a memory error so will run a check when I shutdown.

Slackware :: When I Used Arch Linux, One Of Favorite Stops At The Forums Was The Community Contributions Section?

Feb 3, 2010

One thing that really bothers me about Slackware is the lack of unified, well maintained, and up-to-date documentation, but what keeps me coming back is the outstanding community. I see a lot of community contributions floating around on these forums, but they often get buried in all the questions and other posts people create. I know there's a search feature, but sometimes it's fun to browse an organized list of the community's work and see if I find anything fun or interesting.

Back when I used Arch Linux, one of my favorite stops at the forums was the Community Contributions section. The FreeBSD forums also have a section for user-contributed HOWTOse should have a section like this. Call it "Contributions" and place it by the "Installation" section at the top of this forum. It would provide a great place for users to check out what the other slackers have come up with without making a thread of their own to ask (which will probably result in many duplicate threads) or digging up an ancient thread. The only new threads allowed there could be a HOWTO, a new process or method a user discovered, or a user-made script/program/etc. Of course, other users should be able to comment with their replies for suggestions and/or improvements.

Slackware :: Kernel Hang During Boot Process - Slack 13.1 Stable W/ Kernel 2.6.33.4-smp

Jun 20, 2010

I installed a fresh copy of Slackware 13.1 (stable) on one of my media servers and I am experiencing something strange.... When I power up the machine, I see the kernel booting, no errors, until it gets to the point where it says:

And then randomly freeze there.... Well the machine is not totally frozen because the cursor still blinks. But it will never continue... Like I said, this happens on a random basis... After a reset, it might go through or simply stall at the same spot.

I remember after installing Slack 13.1, I rebooted the machine but forgot to remove the DVD from the player, so the install routine started up, and froze at the same point when it was loading the kernel for the setup programs...

My mobo is a MSI k9N platinum.

I never had this problem before.... (well I never used 13.1 before). Since I got this machine, I used slack 12.2 and slack 13-current with success.

This problem makes the machine extremely unreliable because I intent to use it as a backup and media server, so chances I will WOL the machine and use it remotely... if that happens.

Red Hat / Fedora :: PXE Boot Kernel Image Format ?

Feb 17, 2010

Ive been trying to PXE boot a XEN kernel image in gzip format, and I was getting Invalid or corrupt kernel format error. Ive seen that other kernel images having a file type of Linux kernel x86 boot executable RO-rootFS are bootable. (both are bootable using grub anyhow).

Is there any way to convert the b/n the formats, or any other solution?

I was booting a Virtualbox instance, again I guess that shouldn't matter because pxelinux loads from tftp properly, but it doesn't even proceed to load the kernel. I think the issue here is with the image format itself rather than what it contains, or where it runs.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot After Accidently Removing Kernel Image

Apr 19, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my laptop. Its a dual boot with XP, have been using ubuntu/xp for a while now..Till now i always used to remove older kernel images after ubuntu update, then update grub and do "sudo apt-get autoclean" never had any problem at all.i skipped the second step, i removed the old kernel image and did "Autoclean" on apt-get but forgot to update grub.

Now after i have reboot, when grub loads i can see only 2 "Memtest" lines in grub list and 1 "windows xp" line.the "Linux kernel generic" line is missing. I can boot in xp (have done just that to post this) but since there is no line in grub list to boot into Ubuntu, cant boot in Ubuntu. Is there any option, something i can do at "Grub" to boot into Ubuntu?

Fedora :: How To Build Kernel Headers Version Arch RPM

kernel-debuginfo-common-i686-2.6.30.8-64.hymerfania_dbg.fc11.i686.rpm
kernel-firmware-2.6.30.8-64.hymerfania_dbg.fc11.i686.rpm

kernel-PAEdebug-devel-2.6.30.8-64.hymerfania_dbg.fc11.i686.rpm

kernel-PAE-devel-2.6.30.8-64.hymerfania_dbg.fc11.i686.rpm

What I don't get are any
kernel-headers-<version>.<arch>.rpm
Files. Don't I need them to rebuild modules and drivers on System B? Otherwise, how should I copy my new headers to System B? BTW, System B crashes when I try to build the Kernel on it, that's why I'm building debugger Kernels on System A.

General :: Can't Install Kernel Headers In Arch / Sort It?

Mar 4, 2010

I'm trying to install the "kernel26-headers" package in Arch so I can (try to) compile the Intel 865G graphics drivers from off their website (I can't get H/W acceleration working with xf86-video-intel, but I know the thing has a GPU, because if I boot a Knoppix CD that I have, it enables Compiz by default, and it works damn well).

Any time I try "pacman -S kernel26-headers" I just get a bunch of errors spat back at me code...

Now, I have tried enabling all the US mirrors (HTTP and FTP), and I have even tried a couple of FTP servers in Canada and even Great Britain. None of them seem to work at all!

Is there any way I can get this package?

Software :: VirtualBox Broken After Kernel Update In Arch?

I use Arch Linux and the kernel got upgraded, and it broke VirtualBox. It says to run "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup", but such a file does not exist. The Arch Wiki says "/etc/rc.d/rc.vboxdrv setup", but that doesn't exist either. What should I do?

And is it possible to write a script that runs on startup that automatically fixes VirtualBox whenever the kernel is upgraded?

how to do that. Where do I insert the "CONFIG_LOCALVERSION" line.

Same here. This seems to be due to the kernel version being "3.0" instead of "3.0.0". Recompiling the Kernel (and all modules based on it, e.g. nvidia) with
CONFIG_LOCALVERSION=".0-ARCH" allows me to compile the modules and run VMware.

Slackware :: Install GRUB Via The .txz Package And It Created A Mirrored Image Of The /boot Folder?

Jan 6, 2010

In light of my previous achievement in wireless networking, I've decided to create a larger issue for myself to solve. Which hopefully I can get some help with. Because my system is totally kisspoped up, for those of you who get what that means. I was trying to install GRUB via the .txz package and it created a mirrored image of the /boot folder. Which for some reason contained the / folder. Which in turn held /boot and all the other folders / is expected to contain.

Now, trying to remove the extra /boot folder proved difficult, but once I finally was able to figure it out, I remembered I could removepkg and that would probably mend the situation. However, I was already 20-something percent through moving the files to trash. Now when I checked /, /boot was gone from there. Along with various other folders. SO! Apparently the /tmp/boot folder created was in reality the /boot folder, albeit in the wrong place and having the wrong contents. Somehow, one folder existed as two different versions of itself at the same point in time. Much as a Time Lord might. Deleting one made the other vanish with it.

Good news:I removed it via Thunar and it should be in the root user's trash /home and some other folders had yet to be trashed when I hit cancel, so I can still use some things Bad news:I never ran X as root, so I don't know if it HAS a trash folder I can only use things already started up because the binaries are gone, but the configuration files in /home are still there (although /usr/bin remains)

Ideally, there would be a big UNDO button somewhere in this long row of function keys. Reasonably, there should be some kind of restoration tool. Realistically, I think I'm going to have to reinstall the system, which wasn't easy in the first place due to my faulty disc bay which detects discs at will.
