Fedora :: GRUB Error After Installing F12 / Solution For This?
Jan 2, 2010
I currently have two hard drives. One of them is a dedicated Windows 7 x64 500gb drive. The other, is a 152gb drive that I plan to install Fedora in. When I booted from the live CD, I chose the option to use the entire 152gb disk and to boot from the 152gb disk. I'm not sure if I did something wrong there, but now, GRUB won't detect Windows 7 or Fedora 12.
I would also like to leave the Windows 7 hdd untouched.
I previously had a non-working OpenSUSE installation on the 152gb drive

My hard disk is a 40 gb seagate drive with 3 logical partitions - C (Win 98), D (Data), E (Win XP Home). Yesterday, I decided to format Win 98 partition and install Fedora 11 on it. I used Live USB, custom partitioned for /, /boot and swap. Installation went fine until the Add/Delete boot screen came when I got multiple Unable to mount partition errors. Then I added Win XP (which was on sda6) and restarted the system. When the system booted, I selected Win XP but it didn't do anything. It showed blank screen and then reverted to grub boot loader screen. Then I selected Fedora time and completed installation and it works fine but XP doesn't boot.
Thinking something might have gone wrong, today I reinstalled Fedora. I chose "Install over previous Linux" and this time the installation went smoothly without any errors. However it still doesn't let me boot into Win XP. It gives a "Booting into WinXP in 3/2/1 seconds" and then goes blank and keeps repeating that message.
This is the result of fdisk -l code...

I have just bought a new HDD and installed it in my Ubuntu server. The problem is that when I try to boot, I only receive the message "Grub error 17" and at that point the computer freezes.
In my troubleshooting I found that without the new drive, the computer starts and the hard drives are listed in BIOS as follows:
1. DVD-rom (ide) - Master
2. 80gb disk (with OS installed) (ide) - Master
3. 1tb disk (sata) - Master
In the new setup the disks are listed like this:
1. DVD-rom (ide) - Master
2. 80gb disk (with OS installed) (ide) - Slave
3. 1tb disk (sata) - Master
4. 2tb disk (sata) - Master
May this different listing in BIOS lead to the Grub error?

This is my first linux install ever, so I have no idea what is going on. I hope I have enough information to get this figured out as soon as possible. I was bored with windows 7 and wanted to learn another operating system. I made a boot cd with openSuSE gnome. On the internal hard drive is my windows 7 boot system that i do not want to touch, and on the external 1tb hard drive, i'd like to partition 50 GB for openSuSE. If this is not possible i have another method, but i'd rather not use it (which is use my secondary 80 GiB hdd). When installing, I am getting the error, "Error occured while installing GRUB" Which shows the following:

Before installing OpenSUSE I shrunk my Win 7 partition down in half, then created 3 partitions out of the new free space for /root, /home and /swap. I installed opensuse and when it got to the bootloader section I kept getting Grub error 17 - cannot mount selected partition, and so on. I made sure it was writing to the MBR and also into /boot if that makes a difference, but I did get a prompt that said YaST couldn't make changes to /dev/sda (I'm paraphrasing and can't remember the exact error message). At the moment I have suse installed and my windows partition intact, but no bootloader (not even windows one) so all I can do is boot to Live CD.
Below is the output of fdisk -l. There's quite a few more partitions than it's showing, sda3, sda4 and sda5 are my /home, /root, /swap and the other ones are windows partitions, like the system recovery along with the win7 install. During the suse install I formatted the home and root partitions with ext4 filesystem.

I have windows 7 installed on my copmuter and I ran the alternate disc cause the live disc didn't work for me. So installing was smmoth and I did everything right excpet for the grub part. It asked to be a master loader or something and I said yes. After restarting I see the grub menu but I only see two ubuntus(recovery mode) on the list and 2 test thingys ( memory test) So I go to the ubuntu tab and I get kubuntu ( as ecpected). Right now I am using kubuntu and it is fine but?

So I installed openSUSE 11.1, and got everything from yast2 and then finally got nvidia.ymp or whatever. Bascially, the one click install. When i did that, I couldn't boot into the SUSE GUI. I could boot into the command line but I couldn't start X server. When I did try the Ec2-openSUSE-2.62.27.9 option, I get grub error 13. It says that the ex2fs file system is not supported, only I did not format it with ext2. I am completely stumped and I'm a newbie.

is it ever possible to do dual booting with grub(legacy) ever at all!. it is possible provided i take some pain, here is the link of that post [URL] i was coward and weak i didn't try that out then. but i did try it out. now so if u haven't seen the post .... I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)
so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)
completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27

I installed Windows 7, then Ubuntu 11.04, but GRUB can't seem to see my Windows partition.
I ran 'update-grub' but it didn't seem to find Windows.
Other forums seem to suggest editing /boot/grub/menu.lst but I can't even find that file.
Here is the info I get from the 'boot_info_script' code...

I just reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 (I was running it wubi but various issues prompted me to install it in a separate partition) and now windows isn't an option in the GRUB. I have windows Vista on /dev/sda2 and I can see it on GParted.
I tried looking through some of the other posts, but I think that I need some direct help with this one. I have tried update-grub and nothing changed.
I don't use Windows often, but it is nice to have the option.
All this is running on a Toshiba Saellite A215

using nvidia_173 driver from repository with nvidia geforce fx5500 sping returns this:
Could not set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual would installing nvidia-glx-173 package be the solution? just realized i had the nvidia_173 driver activiated, but not in use. ran "sudo nvidia-xconfig" boots in tty1, so i navigated to the X11 directory and deleted xorg.conf, boots to gnome now
how do i keep it from going to tty1? i know there are threads on this here and there, but most leave you with the default driver, and i want to keep nvidia_173

I'm just slightly confused here, but... what the? Why does installing grub-doc remove BOTH grub-pc, and grub-common? So basically it seems like by installing grub-doc, I have uninstalled grub totally (yes, it is still there as the bootloader, but i have no way of updating it now!) from my system. What's the conflict between grub-doc and grub-pc, such that grub-pc has to be removed?

I'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:
Code:
This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.
I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

When I try to map Logical Volume 'home' to '/home' en choose the 'Leave unchanged (preserve data)' option I get the following error:
The current requested size ( 947904.00 MB) is larger than maximum logical volume size ( 262144.00 MB).
To increase this limit you can create more Physical Volumes from unpartitioned disk space and add them to this Volume Group.

Just finished installing F14 with RAID1 setup for 2 hdd (SATA''s). Entire drives are mirrored, including SWAP. As I had done in the past, I was planning on installing grub on MBR of 2nd hdd. In prep for this I did the following to locate the grub setup files:
grub> find /grub/stage1
find /grub/stage1
(hd0,1)
[code]....
I was surprised, expected to get (hd0,0) & (hd1,0), not (hd0,1) & (hd1,1)
running "fdisk -l" I get:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders, total 234441648 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
[code]....
MBR is the first 512 bytes of the drive. Each partition has a boot sector. In my case grub stage 1 is on 2nd partition of sda & 2nd partition of sdb. What i dont understand is how grub stage 1 can be on sda2 & sdb2, since I am assuming that sda1 & sdb1 would be the first partitions of the drives & therefore contain the MBR's. Maybe this might be because sda1 & sdb1 are SWAP partitions?

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.
Code:
[ Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive
in partition #6 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.

I have had it with the frustration of trying to figure out how to successfully install grub on my own, so I am hitting the forums. What can you tell me about installing grub/grub2 (whichever is best -- I want something that works) to my single hard drive computer. Operating systems: Windows XP, xUbuntu 9.10 Hard drive: Samsung SATA 2, 1 TB Desired result: Menu that loads upon boot so that I can select which OS I would like to load without inserting media device or disk.
I thought this individual had the most straight forward and thorough tutorial (of any I have seen) on the subject but precluded at least one thing for me that I cannot afford to ignore: I don't seem to have a "stage1" that can be loaded by the grub shell. Trying to find it in /boot/grub/stage1 in the grub shell, I get... "Error 15: File not found" What I do have in that directory is 'grubenv'. When I boot up, it loads grub, but it comes up with an error message saying, "File not found". Then, all I get is the 'grub rescue' prompt: "grub rescue>".
Obviously, after spending hours on this thing, this is not the whole story. But there have been so many attempts to try fix it with one thing or another, that I cannot easily relate them all, if I could even remember each one.

since FC1 i install Fedora on a seperate HD on my PC without installing GRUB. I always made a bootdisk and since FC4 a boot CD with mkbootdisk. If i try to make a bootdisk via mkbootdisk --iso --device/tmp/bootdisk.$(uname -r).iso $(uname -r) under Fedora 12 i get a kernel panic if i try to start from this disc:Kernel panic: not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)PID: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 #1Call Trace: then there a some hex values and the message that i should choose a proper root partition. if i start with options linux root=correct_bootpartition i get the same kernel panic with the same message.I found out that it must have something to do with the kernel*.img file. In earlier versions the of fedora it has been copied to the iso image. That's not done anymore.Iso size F11: ~ 8.8mb; Iso size F12: ~3.4MB

After applying the latest round of updates last night, I turned on my laptop this AM (ATI X1300 Mobility graphics running the default drivers), selected the latest kernel in GRUB, and waited to log in....only problem is that instead of seeing a normal loading screen (Blue with Fedora icon filling in), I instead get a black screen mostly covered in multicolored rectangles. I don't believe there was a graphics driver update, so I'm rather confused as to what went wrong/how to procede. I can still boot using a previous kernel.

I've been running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26 w/ desktop kde3.5 on my laptop for a while, and im going to take a trip in which i will be unable to take wmy laptop with me. However, where i am going contains computers and i figured if i could install debian onto my external harddrive, i could just boot onto the other computers. I install it using the debianlenny-i386 dvd image. However whenever I try to boot it from a computer. Grub returns
Code:
Grub Loading...
Error 21
and then the blinkng cursor. On one site i found something saying "you may need to activat the drive" and some command-line instructions on how to do it. However the commands have faded from memory and i am now unable to find that site again. Could anyone offer insight on how to fix this "grub error 21" or how to activate it. I run primarily debian but i have a windows partition on one of my relative's computers.
Thank you in advance for the help!!!
btw I'm installing on a western digital 500gb "passport" external hard drive with ext3 and swap partitions.
