OpenSUSE Install :: Error Occured While Installing GRUB?
Jan 12, 2011
This is my first linux install ever, so I have no idea what is going on. I hope I have enough information to get this figured out as soon as possible. I was bored with windows 7 and wanted to learn another operating system. I made a boot cd with openSuSE gnome. On the internal hard drive is my windows 7 boot system that i do not want to touch, and on the external 1tb hard drive, i'd like to partition 50 GB for openSuSE. If this is not possible i have another method, but i'd rather not use it (which is use my secondary 80 GiB hdd). When installing, I am getting the error, "Error occured while installing GRUB" Which shows the following:

Before installing OpenSUSE I shrunk my Win 7 partition down in half, then created 3 partitions out of the new free space for /root, /home and /swap. I installed opensuse and when it got to the bootloader section I kept getting Grub error 17 - cannot mount selected partition, and so on. I made sure it was writing to the MBR and also into /boot if that makes a difference, but I did get a prompt that said YaST couldn't make changes to /dev/sda (I'm paraphrasing and can't remember the exact error message). At the moment I have suse installed and my windows partition intact, but no bootloader (not even windows one) so all I can do is boot to Live CD.
Below is the output of fdisk -l. There's quite a few more partitions than it's showing, sda3, sda4 and sda5 are my /home, /root, /swap and the other ones are windows partitions, like the system recovery along with the win7 install. During the suse install I formatted the home and root partitions with ext4 filesystem.

The problem is that, ihave previously seen this kind of message a month ago.And when i tried to install the second time it is installed.
Can i debug it?
I have no problem when installing Fedora on to a normalharddisk.
Another question can i install both Gnome and Kde on the disk.

Now I installed Opensuse on my system which already had Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 on it. Whilst Opensuse's replacement Grub correctly identified Windows as an alternative system it did not do the same for Ubuntu. I've been tinkering around in menu.lst (after taking back ups) and I can't ever get Ubuntu running - I either get a Grub error 15 (file not found) or error 17 (unable to read partition). By booting on a live CD I can see that all the information is still there, I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get to it from Grub! Did Opensuse move the partitions around during install?

I used to dual boot openSuse and XP but I yanked out my linux HDD and now my Windows will not boot, I get a GRUB error 22 (missing partition). This PC does not have a CDrom so I can not simply use the fixmbr from an XP recovery console.I have booted into opensuse Live CD (Flash Drive) and tried to use Yast but it gives me an error it can not write because of the partitioning. I also tried the recover shell but am totally lost trying to re-write GRUB because I can not find the menu.lst file.

I have a laptop with the CD-ROM apparently broken, so I installed OpenSuSE 11.4 milestone4 from USB stick .unfortunately in the end of the installation I had a GRUB configuration error (twice) . then, in the third time I removed GRUB from the installation procedureSince my other GNU / Linux is Ubuntu, I did update-grub on ubuntu, it detects the presence of OpenSuSE but it does not add it to its grub.cfgwhen I wanted to add it manually to ubuntu's GRUB, I realized that, in OpenSuSE, the /boot path was empty. My Question is: Do you know how to put the files needed to boot OpenSuSE (initrd, vmlinuz , ...) in the directory /boot without installing OpenSuSE's GRUB ?? (ie keep the ubuntu's GRUB)

This is a problem when Windows is running some malware that cannot be removed, which happens all the time. The problem is all the new hardware or specialized hardware will not work on Linux so Windows is the only choice. I would think the latest versions of Linux would have this problem worked out by now. I installed 11.3 one week ago, only to find that the repair option in the install menu no longer exists so don't bother uses this link to reload the GRUB HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive. I also tried this link Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic which does not work either. On step 2 typing grub returns the error message "grub command not found". You can use GRUB if you boot the install DVD and select Rescue Boot. However when you type find /boot/grub/menu.lst the error message "file not found" is returned.
I did the following to restore my GRUB boot record. Boot the install DVD and select the update option during installation. Change all the repositories to enable except the NVIDIA repository, it is not responding at this time. When the system comes up go into Yast and open the boot loader. It should have your original boot menu in memory. Change the default to another option and re-write the MBR. This will write a new MBR using the original data updated with your new default. Re-boot and then change your default back. I am just a NewBe so this may not be exactly correct but I hope it saves someone like me some time fixing a MBR re-writing by the Windows installer.

my Dad's computer was running quite slow here lately (Running Hardy Heron). I decided to go ahead and run all the software updates, and had it go ahead and update the OS as well. Well, the install went fine, but upon booting, it crashes to busy-box with the dreaded "ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/########## not found error". I found that if I waited for a while, then cd'd to the by-uuid folder, this file eventually showed up. So I figured maybe if I 'exit' from there, it would boot up and find the file. Au Contrair, things get stranger! I end up with a purple screen telling "An Error Occured While Mounting /". Here's what it looks like: This is quite frustrating, I'd like to get it fixed and hopefully save the data he has on there! I remember having the by-uuid error once before after running an update I think, but can't remember how I fixed it! Feels like I just used the 'exit' trick a couple of boots and it was fine??

I was installing and got this error first: the boot loader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128GB The system might not boot if BIOS supports only lba24 (result is error during install grub mbr) status loc dev/sdb6
I continued with the install and then got:

I tried several times to install sue 11.3 on a amd 64 system by configuration a soft raid1 by this order:
md0 /boot
md1 /
md2 swap
or my problem, after configuration and install over the dvd and yast installation menu, after the first reboot I have a grub error -> nothing found. If i try to setup suse 11.2 over the same method, it works.after a system upgrade to 11.3 all is working fine. The only problem is by installing directly the 11.3 I also re-download the dvd and try over the netcd and it's all the time the same error.I searched in the forum but nothing found (perhaps i do a wrong search)

I recently decided to try out openSUSE 11.4 with gnome and install it on my external USB HDD. To do so i followed this guide here SDB:Installation on external hard drive - openSUSE
Unfortunately after finishing the install when trying to boot into the system i got GRUB error 17. The only thing i did differently from the guide was placing the /boot partition after a ~800 GB NTFS partition with my data.
I tried to solve the problem by reinstalling the system with different settings than before. After completing all of the steps in the guide mentioned i disabled booting from MBR and enabled booting from /boot partition. Also set the installer to write generic boot code to MBR.
Though after the installation i realized that grub is not loading at all this time and went on to fix it by completing the steps here SDB:All about GRUB - openSUSE . After doing so i'm back to GRUB error 17.

Ok so I've searched for a solution to this problem everywhere and couldn't seem to find any, so I decided to post here.Recently I came across a new modified version of Ubuntu which was made for pentesters, called "blackbuntu".Now I know everything is the same as linux, except a little tweaked. So, I am trying to setup my bootable USB drive, and get this error (I chose Try an unlisted OS -- Then picked New Syslinux). And I keep getting this error:^

I'm a Windows 7 user attempting to install openSUSE in a partition on a separate hard disk, and am receiving grub error 17 on install. My windows partition is sdb1, and my (hopeful) openSUSE partition is sdc2. When I attempt to redefine the grub config after receiving the error message, there are no mounted drives in my "/dev/" folder to point to, nor can I find the kernel image or RAM disk in my "/boot/" folder.

I did a fresh install of 11.2. When I reboot grub came up to load opensusie instead of Windows 7 MBR. Further looking at the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. I noticed it's point to hd0,2 which is my first drive three partition. I load everything including grub to sdb3 (hd1,2). When I pointed everything back to hd1,2 now I get error code 22 on reboot. How do you restore grub to sdb3 or hd1,2. I also need to repair my Windows 7 Pro MBR.

I installed opensuse 11.2 64bit on my external hard drive with the idea that this way the two OS would be completely seperate and I could just use suse when I felt like it. Everything boots fine for both OS when the hard driv is plugged in but when it is unplugged I can't get past a boot screen which says: Grub loading stage 1.5 Error 21 I have seen on another forum a fix using the windows install disk but I no longer have this. Is there some other fix I can use to make my laptop portable again.

I have a Windows 7 OS installed as my main OS, it installed on its own HDD with 3 other data storage drives.
On my 5th drive I installed a copy of OpenSUSE 11.02 to see if I like it. I have decided I don't wish to keep it so I reformatted the drive while in Win7. Of course on restart I got the Grub 1.5 Error 22. All my HDD's are seperate and there are no partitions.
I have had to reinstall OpenSUSE just to get my PC to boot.
All I want to is remove OpenSUSE from my computer without losing my Win 7 install.
My Win 7 install disc fails to recognise my Win 7 so I can not get the recovery command prompt/repair options.
Can someone explain in say 5 simple steps to get back my original MBR so I can boot straight to Windows as I can't seem to find a guide that actually explains what to do. Either by doing it in OpenSUSE 11.02 or Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I made a clean install of opense Suse and by mistake I overwrited the menu.lst (because of the restoration utility). As a result I have the grub error 15 : file not found, and tried everything I could think.
Grub is installed on the MBR and boots from the extended partition. The new openSuse is on sda8, there is an old openSuse on sda4 but xorg is broken. I can boot on Windows, and sda4, but not on sda8 menu.lst

I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Suse 11.3, installing suse second on a seperate 80GB drive. After a ridiculous amount of faffing around due to my dvd writer essentially not working, finally get suse installed, messing with GRUB settings in an attempt to preserve Windows' boot manager, restart; GRUB error 22.
Go through the whole process again, this time accepting the use of grub and not changing anything from default - exactly the same response. None of the tens of boot disks/utilities I've tried will allow me into suse to have a look at the grub config. There are no applications for windows that will allow me to write to ext3.
