I use Fedora 13 x86_64. Recently i installed q4 wine and booting froze with message "registering binary handler for windows applications". Then on removing q4 wine boot froze at "unexpectedly disconnected from boot status daemon".I also removed wine, smolt.

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
I'm new to Linux, trying it out as an alternative to Windows. I have created a bootable pendrive which had been working, but when I rebooted the 'Ubuntu' splash screen was larger, blockier than normal, then I am presented with a purple screen with nothing on it. Not sure if it is frozen, cannot do anything at this stage, desktop doesn't launch.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

I just installed Fedora 15 with the gnome desktop which looks like the android system for mobile phones, I installed wine which put the icons on my desktop but whenever I install a windows app it doesn't put an icon on my desktop for that particular application. How would I add an icon for those window apps so I can lunch them from the desktop, I don't know if you call that the desktop or just the program luncher either way how do I put an icon there so I can run those windows apps from there?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying hard to run an openvpn server on a openvz VPS, the problem is packets sent from openvpn server process, doesnt reach the client, so connection is never stablished (I run tcpdump on server and wireshark on client to carefully investigate whats wrong), the first guess is that a kind of firewall is blocking traffic (I tried connecting to server through different ISP's but it's possible the national network provider applied some filtering but it cant be on IP,src port or dst port as I'd tried different configuration.

I've two computers with 1000Mbps cards, one opensuse 11.2 32 bits (AMD K7 over 1Ghz and 2MB RAM) and the other Opensuse 11.3 11.3 64 bits (single processor, 3GB). Both of the cards are configured with skge. The swith is an SMC 10/100/1000 and it reports connection at 1000Mbps on both cards. The i386 is a server and the other is a client.
I've in the client some directories of the server mounted by nfs.
I'm testing the connection copying long files (1GB for instance) and the copy reaches 14MBps at most, and most of the time it is more or less at 10MBps, which is too far from 1000Mbps.
It may be a problem of configuration? The switch is not good enough? or may be another kind of problem ?
I have a syslog-ng running and kernel build of 2.6.34.8 I use a syslog API in my program with facility LOG_LOCAL5 and and levels debug err and crit and info. when I ran on the older syslog facility I had everything logged fine as I intended. now I have written these rules into the syslog-ng.conf:

the last two rules show my program gnssapp. the result is all debug levels or crit or err levels I don't see any of them !
Anyone noticing intermittent problems with the screensaver not kicking in or the display not sleeping? This is in gnome under F11.I have the Power Management Preferences set to put the display to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and gnome screensaver is configured for 5 minutes idle time.On a regular basis, I'll leave my computer come back anda) the screensaver hasn't kicked inorb) the screensaver kicked in, but the power management features didn't kick in to put the display to sleep.It seems to be an intermittent problem and usually it goes away after I restart X, but then at some point it comes back. In the past, I've gotten in the habit of being logged in for weeks/months at a time but I find that I can't go more than a few hours without logging out and back in or else the screen won't go to sleep.

It's a dual boot system and Fedora 11 resides on sda3 of hard disk (WD 3200AAJS-6).Both suspend and hibernate don't work, but the symptoms are different. For hibernate, after resume, there are some messages (??) about register errors quickly flashed on the screen, then the logon window shows but the system hangs. For suspend, I cannot wake up the system by hitting some keys on the keyboard. After I press the power button, LCD doesn't get any signal. I remember hibernate worked when I was using Fedora10, but wireless card did not automatically reconnect at that time. Also hibernate works fine for vista.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).
I have Fedora 12 and I'm using it as a server and there's no keyboard. Everything works fine, except that I can't reboot. I can see the system coming up, but at the end it seems to stop / hang. Maybe something todo with gdm, I don't know!

Here are some data that may be helpful:
HDD: 2TB partitioned to 9 drives ( 1 ext4, 1 swap and 7 NTFS drives) code...
I tried fixing grub, but when I type "root (hd0,11)" , it says - it has exceeded the cylinder limit of BIOS. I need help in getting fedora up and running.
Please note that formatting or altering the current drive structure is NOT an option for me. I bet there is a work around to this problem.
I booted F12 live cd with virtualbox and installed it on a USB stick(4GB). The installation was a success but, when I try to boot it, it doesn't work. Do I have to install the grup manually?

But, After i upgrade to fedora 15 via terminal(Preupgrade), that auto booting has disabled. I should Press Enter to boot into Fedora 15. It should be have auto booting into feodra 15 like when i was fedora 14.
While I was trying to drag the Desktop icon to the places sidepane in nautilus file browser so that I can have it above Documents icon, I accidentally dropped it in Documents icon. I immediately deleted the "Desktop" shortcut that was created in "/home/user/Documents" but it was too late already and the damage has been done. When I try to create a new document on my desktop, it says "Error while coying to Desktop There was an error getting information about the destination. Show more details Error stating file '/home/user/Documents/' Desktop':No such file or directory" Now, I know that my desktop now is pointing me to a location in Documents folder which doesn't exist at all. I tried looking for any available settings/options in gconf-editor, but only in vain.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm bonding the two NICs on my FC10 server to create a bonded LAG between it and my Cisco Catalyst switch, but during kernel init, the system always give me a notice that "bond0 doesn't appear to exist" so it skips it.Once I log in, I can always open Network Manager and the bond0 interface goes from "Inactive" to "Active" and bond0 immediately works, and I can restart the appropriate network services and everything is fine. But any idea why this bonding wouldn't be initializing during boot up? The ports on the Cisco are configured for hard set speed and duplex and portfast is turned off on them.Is there a guide for best practices for creating LAGs (bonded interfaces) between FC10 and Cisco switches?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI created a Fedora 13 x86 live image on USB using [URL] I've set it to boot using the USB and when it does I see the 10 sec countdown (or the options if I press a key), I tried all the options to boot the image but the screen just turns black for a few seconds and then the the monitor goes into "power saving mode" and nothing happens (I waited like 10 minutes). What's going on? I am trying to install fedora into an empty (secondary) HD, in the main HD I only have a win XP, and I don't want to burn a cd/dvd that's why I am trying to boot the USB.

When i log back in the shortcut is set to disabled, and I have tried different key combos and they give the same result. I am using Fedora 14 btw and hopefully you guys know of a solution. I tried making a custom command also using the gnome-terminal command but the terminal launches with a different directory other than my home directory when using that method.

I have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed kmod-nvidia on my F12 system and now it doesn't boot anymore. I just receive a black screen with a blinking '_' on top of my screen immediately after i choose F12 in my grub menu. (I have a Nvidia 8800GT.)
I've tried to run the following command after the installation but it didn't work: [url]
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
So I didn't blacklist nouveau or anything else. I just foolishly thought it was going to work.
Now I can't boot my system anymore. Is there any way to solve the problem? Or can I remove kmod-nvidia using a live cd? How?
I have a Fedora 12 system that I am trying to configure with 3 IP addresses on one NIC card. I created scripts for each of the connections I want in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and they are called ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth0:1, ifcfg-eth0:2. If I run /sbin/services network restart it configures everything as I would like. When I restart the computer the only device configured is eth0 and it is set to DHCP. If I run the script again everything works. What am I missing to make this change persistent?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.
