I have been experiencing this peculiar issue with Ubuntu 9.10. Whenever the system boots, the audio doesn't work but when I do a 'sudo alsa force-reload', the volume icon gets muted and on unmuting it the audio works. This is the information regarding the audio device I get on doing lspci

I have made a pretty sizable mistake. I was trying to figure out why my game was having sound issues when I was told to update my sound drivers. After a bit of searching, I came across this website. I downloaded and ran the script in the first link. Minor problem: I was using PulseAudio, not ALSA. Needless to say, the script didn't work. After the machine rebooted, I had no sound at all. I am experiencing problems with the Gnome ALSA Mixer. I installed Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro inside Windows (I am running Windows via bootcamp), and when I am running Ubuntu the sound doesn't work. After researching the problem online, I was told that one needed to download an application called the "Gnome ALSA Mixer", and switch the mute to off (apparently the mute is default). I downloaded the application, but whenever I try to run it the application window is blank. There are no controls of any sort. I was told when installing Ubuntu inside windows that the disk efficiency (I think thats what is was) is very much reduced, but I don't know if this has anything to do with that.
Also, is there a way to prevent the trackpad from registering stimulus while typing? I find it very obnoxious that every time I try to type in my password or the like that the curser clicks off of where I'm typing, so I am constantly having to move the pointer back and re-click in the area I'm trying to type in (if that makes sense).
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and for some reason, privoxy just won't start properly on startup. I see privoxy is there when I run 'ps -A', but Firefox says that it is refusing connections. When I run 'sudo /etc/init.d/privoxy restart', it restarts and everything is peachy. But for some reason, it just won't start properly on boot

The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. I have these Creative Inspire M4500 4.1 surround sound speakers.I got them to work succesfully on my older computer by installing the ALSAmixer. and then unmuting the channels. However on my new computer even after installing ALSAmixer, i cannot seem to be able to get playback from my rear two speakers. I tried the community ubuntu documentation and ALSA's own guide(which seemed too complicated for me.)

View 4 Replies View Relatedive just installed dosbox, my favorite dos emulator. in windows, i usually used to play doom and both sound and video worked flawlessly. when i tried running doom in dosbox in ubuntu, the game ran perfectly, but the problem is with the sound. the soundblaster sound effects stutter and are not even working at times. the soundblaster based music doesnt even work! i either blame pulse-audio or the defaut config settings.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu 9.10 X64, and am using ALSA for my sound. I have no trouble with sound: VLC, Adobe's Flash plugin, Java, etc. all work properly. When I run the Gnash standalone player, sound does not work at all.

Does anyone have a clue on how to get this fixed, or if its even possible to get it fixed? I've tried searching guides for it without anyluck. And when i'm trying to set it to use gmplayer or totem it dosn't work either, mplayer and totem dosnt get either picture or sound.

I have a Gigabyte mainbord with an Intel IHC9 sound chip. When I configure it via YAST the test-sound plays fine, and when I issue:
sudo speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
some friendly voice starts speaking as well.
But:

doesn't bring about anything sound-like.

trying to get ALSA running on a mainboard with onboard Intel soundchip using the snd-hda-intel driver. aplay detects no devices and amixer says: "Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory". Since I was change my mainboard and sound chip of course kmix doesn't work, I can change the volume but it doesn't effect on output volume it look like kmix have 3 level, Mute, Low and high.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
I'm using F11, KDE4. I have uninstalled Pulseaudio as it's unusable for my configuration (2 souncards, one of them a M Audio Delta 66). In order to not have Phonon blocking my M Audio Delta 66 card I need to use DMix. The built in ALSA dmix support doesn't show up in Phonon (System Settings -> Multimedia -> Device Preference) but I found out after some research how to add your own dmixer in the ~/.asoundrc file. It might depend on the way it tries to access this device. When you hover the "DMixer" device it displays it will try the following devices: 1. ALSA: dmixer I think it should rather be ALSA: plug:dmixer But I can't figure out where you are able to configure this, does anyone know? I also wonder how I can remove the Pulseaudio entry in phonon. This is not important but still though PA is uninstalled. There is a Remove button but it's always disabled.
I use compiz but when I boot I need to reset the windowanager for it to function correctly :'(. It is not the end of the world, but it is annoying

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently converted an amd 64 bit WINdows machine to Lucid 64 bit. Everything has gone well. I had numerous issues with Pulseaudio that I removed it. Sound with Alsa has been great, including system theme sounds. I can record via a mike as well. What I cannot do is to capture sounds coming through the sound card. When I record I am getting empty files. The mixer indicates that there are two capture devices. Here is some data on my audio card.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo i upgraded to 10.04 a few months ago, right after it was released. clean install. it worked perfectly out of the box, or so it seemed. I had had sound problems in 9.10 that i didn't experience after i upgraded... until i tried to use some headphones a few days ago. when i connected the headphones, the speakers wouldn't mute. i thought it was no big deal. i had the same issue in 9.10 and it was fixed after i upgraded alsa. i figured i'd try the same thing. I used the same alsa upgrade script i used last time [URL] and it fixed the jack sensing and the sound worked perfectly... for about 5 minutes. after a short while of playing audio, sound would stop playing. i'd stop getting sound from video files, audio files, and even from my browser. i'd have to reboot to get sound again... only to lose it again in about 10 minutes. Now it's regressed to the point where i have no sound even after i reboot.
weird thing is, when i test out an audio file with aplay, it works... even if i just get garbage sound from some mp3 files.
anyway, i've got an HP dv7 and this is my aplay -l output

I've got the Pulse audio applet running and when I'm using Rhythmbox it shows that on the playback tab and you can see the signal on the signal bar.
Viewing Flash videos shows the ALSA Plugin but shows no signal on the signal bar.
At least, I think it was the update that broke it. Anyway, my sound was working fine yesterday. I have gone through this thread to try and fix my sound, and it appears that my sound card has been uninstalled.

Last time my sound wasn't working, I was directed to this thread. The script from this thread might work again, but if it will just be erased after every update, I'd like something a bit more permanent.
the sound stops while playing music or movies and can't be restartet. I already upgraded alsa to 1.0.24.2. I managed to fix the problem somehow after hours of deinstalling and reinstalling alsa and trying loads of things, but I did not really find the cause of the problem.

I used alsa driver/utils/lib 1.0.23 from alsa-project.org So it fixed it...but now I don't have sound in Flash (youtybe videos, etc.). System sound works perfectly (ev en Skype is working) I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64bit and Google Chrome browser. flash -> flashplugin-nonfree
