Ubuntu :: The Nvidia Driver Doesn't Work - Black Screen

Oct 21, 2010

I just installed Maverick on my HP tx1000. Jockey offered me two drivers for my NVidia Go 6150. I tried the recommended one--and it seemed to be working. It had a green light next to it in Jockey, Compiz worked, etc. Then I rebooted.

Except it didn't reboot--the disk thrashed for a while, and then I was met with a black screen. I tried recovery mode and got a bash prompt...which crashed when I ran `startx'. Then I tried Failsafe X, which did work. After some experimentation, I realized it was the Nvidia driver at fault, so I tried the not-recommended one, which didn't work, and now I've disabled both of them. But isn't there a proper driver for me to use? IIRC, I was using a restricted one with Lucid, and it was working all right.

Fun fact: The day before I installed Maverick, Windows 7 randomly decided to not boot all the way. It would show the splash screen, and then hang with a black screen too. But it works in Safe Mode. And had been working fine for a while beforehand. There must be demons in my graphics card.

OpenSUSE :: Dual Monitor - Nvidia Driver With X Screen - Shows A Black Screen

Feb 5, 2011

I have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.

Ubuntu :: Black Screen After Activating Nvidia Driver?

I've searched the nets and others have seemed to solve the problem after hitting alt+ctrl+f1/f2 and editing some files after that, but that doesn't work for me. Booting into recover console gives me nothing but a long stream of white words before it runs to --> done. and then it goes back to a black screen. Running from Live CD I can't access my ubuntu files.

Fedora :: NVidia Driver Results In Nowhere ( Black Screen )?

Sep 23, 2009

NVidia FX5200: nvidia-glx-173xxx The problem is that, when I install it, upon rebooting, I get a black screen with one blinking underscore at the top left corner. I somehow managed to get into the console and .. there's something wrong with the video card driver ( no way I could catch it into a picture ).

This was the exact reason why my Fedora CD was laying on the corner for months - I remember having this issue earlier as well.

Is there a way to fix it or at least, recover from a broken video card driver ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen Boot-up After NVidia Driver Install?

Nov 8, 2010

I realize that many have had the issue of getting a black screen when booting up. I'm posting because I've tried a couple fixes that I read after doing a search and haven't had any luck yet. I have the 64-bit 10.04 installed on my netbook and my issue surfaced after installing the current nVidia accelerated graphics driver. Following the install ubuntu now boots to a black screen and nothing more. 'nomodeset' only allows me to boot ubuntu in low-graphics mode (which I'm in now) and this fix hasn't produced a solution either: [URL]..64&postcount=9 My netbook has nVidia ION2 graphics with an integrated as well as a discreet graphics card (Intel GMA3150 and NVIDIA GT21

Debian Hardware :: Nvidia Driver Causing Black Screen

Jun 29, 2015

I have a system running a fairly new copy of Stretch. I have an nvidia Geforce 210 (on my desktop)

Code: Select allVGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT216 [GeForce 210] (rev a1)

Previously running Squeeze I was using the proprietary driver and never had any issues. Now using the nouveau driver video playback of mp4 files is glitchy and programs like google earth don't operate smoothly. I installed the nvidia driver from the repositories based on this guide, used nvidia-xconfig to generate an xorg.config file. I made sure noeveau was blacklisted and rebooted my machine.

I was greeted with a black screen. So I booted up in recovery mode, used telinit 2 (side note: what happened to /etc/inittab???) to change to a runlevel that doesn't start X, and confirmed that nouveau was, in fact, not loaded. Typed startx and without any errors or warnings the screen went black. ctrl+alt+fN wouldn't bring me back to a terminal, but hitting the power button did shut down X and halt the machine.

I'm not really sure how to go about debugging this as I get no useful output from anything, just a blank screen and that's it.

For the time being I just blacklisted the nvidia driver and let the system boot with nouveau; I'd still like to get the nvidia driver working properly, though. I've always just downloaded the driver right from nvidia and installed it, but I know that isn't the best way to do it. I'd rather not screw up a brand new system, it's so nice and fast with the new SSD.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Going Loopy - Nvidia Driver And DVI - Login Screen Went Black

Dec 24, 2009

I had a fully working Nvidia driver setup in FC 12 with no problems using an old LG monitor (LCD panel) on a VGA connection. I have just replaced the monitor with a newer Dell model that has a DVI connection. I plugged it in and got nice Post Screen, FC 12 boot progress display but when it got to displaying the login screen it went black.

Ctrl +Alt+F2 took me to a command prompt where I can type commands no problem. If I change the driver to the Nouveau (and Chattr +a the xorg.conf file) I get a lovely gui. So far nothing I have tried has let me use the Nvidia driver. I have searched around Google and tried nvidia-xconfig, system-config-display, livna-config-display xrandr (which fails to work at all) but so far I have got no where.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia Driver 96 Doesn't Work With Geforce4 MX-4000?

Mar 24, 2010

I've been having big problems getting 9.10 to work with a Geforce4 MX-4000 card. I know it is not a hardware problem because I've got a dual boot win xp/9.10 setup and the video card works very well under win xp. The monitor is a Samsung P2250. The issue is that the highest resolution available after installing the recommended nvidia 96 driver is 800x600, the same as that before the driver was installed. This is very frustrating because the monitor requires 1920x1080 I'm not sure whether the driver is at fault or the xorg.conf settings.

Should I try installing the nvidia site drivers? I've checked out several forum threads on xorg.conf settings but I'm really not sure how to go on this. What I need is an entry level guide to setting up xorg.conf. The manual here is not that user friendly.

Fedora Installation :: Software Update - Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) - Nvidia Driver Doesn't Work

Sep 1, 2010

Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora (2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64))After the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

Code:

Entering non-interactive startup
Starting monitoring for VG vg_user1: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_user1" monitored

[code]....

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?

Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?

General :: Ubuntu - Black Screen After Installing Nvidia Drivers?

Aug 5, 2009

I have scoured the web the last few hours and I have come across a plethora of similar problems relating to Ubuntu and Nvidia drivers. However, I still havent found a sufficient cure for the problem.

The exact problem I face is that as soon as I install the Nvidia recommended drivers using the "Hardware Driver Manager", I restart the system but it never gets past the login splash screen. After I log in it simply goes to a black screen and sits like this indefinately.

Does anyone know of a particular fix for this problem? I am at the end of my tether and there is no way I can use Linux if it means either getting a different graphics driver or sitting on a 800*600 resolution. (Not to mention I dont have acclerated 3d support...so no DVD playing!)

I have a Nvidia GeForce4 MX graphics card and im a complete n00b to Linx so please go easy on the technical jargon.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: RTL8191SE Driver On Compaq Presario CQ62 Doesn't Work With XP Driver

Oct 23, 2010

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.

However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.

I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia Drivers Result In Black Screen - Hybrid GPU

Apr 16, 2010

On both Karmic Koala as well as Lucid Lynx, I am having massive problems getting my nvidia card to register properly. I am on an Acer Aspire 5953 laptop pc with a Gt130m discrete GPU in a hybrid installation with an onboard GPU.Freshly installed, both 9.10 and 10.04 runs smoothly, I can enable desktop effects, I can even see the screensavers that run openGL - although they run laggily in fullscreen, since they're obviously using the onboard, and very weak, GPU.The problem however, appears whenever I install the suggested NVIDIA drivers that Ubuntu finds for me - after doing this, I am asked to reboot the system and on both systems, I am treated to a black screen, instead of a login-screen. The only way to get the system up and running again, I have found, is boot in fail safe mode and edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, erasing everything. This lets me boot back up in a regular mode.

When I check the logs, both the onboard GPU and the gt130m GPU is located, the onboard as PCI:0:0:2:0 and the nvidia gt130m discrete gpu as PCI:0:1:0:0 - I have tried adding BusID: ("PCI:0:1:0:0") to the xorg.conf, too, to no avail. I am continously treated to the black screen (a flicker at most) and the logs always tells me that no xserver could find no screens. So far, I have only been installing Ubuntu inside windows - I am hesitating to install on a fresh drive, since I am afraid of the nvidia black screen putting me in a position where I can't access the system. Is it possible that the fact that I install ubuntu inside windows might somehow affect Linux's capability of accessing my discrete GPU?

Ubuntu :: Nvidia Black Screen Afer Install Booting With Nomodeset

Nov 30, 2010

Running ubuntu 10.10, had to use nomodeset to successfully boot from cd into "Try ubuntu without installing" thing and install ubuntu.

Edited grub by adding nomodeset after quiet and splash in order to boot from hard disk, still booting that way as I'm writing. The computer is an All In one Pc called ONETWOPWU44. The graphic card is an NVIDIA g210m.

After booting into hard disk I installed the proprietary driver resulting in an alternate of white then gray then black then an Image with red blue and some other colours on the screen, not sure of the order but they came one after an other, right when the login form should appear, I am then able to login by tipping my password into the form and pressing enter, I now that cause I can hear the sound when the system loads but the above described situation continues.

I had the same result with an older nvdia driver it was 253 something, don't remember exactly. Then I downloaded the 260.19.21 driver from nvdia website and installed it, with this one I only got a black screen. I now have a fresh ubuntu 10.10 copy and would like to be guided in making this work. How do I install the driver corectly or how do I enable nouveau 3d support?
