i have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and played around a bit and have got it booting into cli instead of the login screen. gnome is my default desktop environment but i wish to run kde along side to play around with. When i boot into kde using startx kde (usualy just using startx) all i get is a mouse, black background and a terminal screen.

I have installed following this guide [URL]... x_and_Mac_OS/X but I have an hp g71 349wm with intel chipsets, on ubuntu 10.10 I can't use nvidia, my system hates me if I try to install those drivers, that guide says I need either nvidia or ati drivers, I have not tried to get ati drivers going as when I tried to get nvidia going, my system totally crashed and ended up being totally unrecoverable for some reason, anyway my problem is that after installing pylotro and lotro and patching, I start it up and all I get is a big black square on the top left side of my screen.. no idea what to do to make this work. the only way to get rid of the square is to reboot.

The reason I ask is Gnome was installed by default and I didn't get an option to install KDE during the text based setup. So I put in the dvd and to see if there was an option to install kde, and it does Install with KDE Environment (to that affect). Would it currently erase the current Debian installation with Gnome or will KDE install as a second desktop option to use?

Looks like the black desktop background is hiding it. Also when opening emails with attachments the attachment opens then gets covered with the black background.

Indeed, I can simply uncheck this setting and manually adjust, but then my changes would apply to all themes, if I were to change my theme in the future.How can I edit the transparency of the GTK theme itself so that it applies to gnome-terminal?I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with the "Ambiance" theme, and I'm seeing these files which are probably relevant. Am I on the right track? (those files don't contain anything obvious like "transparency" or "opacity" to change ... so I"m not exactly sure what/where to change)
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhy does on some computers my terminal window have a background I can see through and on others its a solid color? I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on 4 machines as base OS and I have many virtual machines of it also. I havent changed the terminal preferences on any of them, however on some computers the terminal background which is purple is not solid in that you can see what is in the background behind it. On others the background is truly solid purple; you can not see behind/through it.
Is there any way to change the terminal window for these machines that are displaying solid to the 'see-thru' way? Ive been using some ebooks and things and really like opening up vi/vim in the purple see-thru window that allows me to write and see the text in the background...however on some machines I can not do this because the terminal display is truly solid. ? All my computers have the same profile settings for terminal..

Note - I am making a distinction here between what I call see-thru and the 'transparent' setting in the terminal preferences as this seems to use the desktop background and is different from what I am talking here.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.
I did a search but for this topic and I thought it would be discussed quite a bit, did not get any results. Maybe I did not use the correct words? Anyhow, I am running Kubuntu 9.04 and wish to switch to Ubuntu Karmic 9.10. I do still want to keep Kubuntu 9.04 as a boot up option temporarily in case I have major issues with Ubuntu. Ill also need to know how to get rid of Kubuntu after Im sure all is well with Ubuntu. Finally, there are a ton of boot options (different kernels Ive upgraded to) in Grub when Kubuntu boots up. How do I get rid of those? I also have a Windows XP partition that I boot into occasionally.

I had to edit both my .muttrc and my vim colorscheme to change the background color from black to none in order to get a proper black background (or, more accurately, to retain the terminal's default black background). Setting it to black resulted in a dark grey background. This only happens with gnome-terminal; konsole, xterm and rxvt are fine.
A friend of mine said he could make my system faster and preceded to kill some processes. I have no idea if that is related but my computer worked fine until I shut it down for a while. When I went back and turned it on it gives me a screen is mostly black with the terminal in the top left corner. If I type "exit" it takes me to the Ubuntu login screen with the colorful background and all. If I sign in it takes me right back to the previous described screen. I dont think it has anything to do with the graphics card or driver because on the login screen and even on the black screen I have a cursor. Plus using nano to view the Xorg log I saw no errors. I have also in desperation removed all Xorg.conf files and remade them and I have tried startx. dont tell me I should backup all my files and pop in an image disk and go from scratch
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have to say that I don't mind Unity all that much! Certainly not as much as I had expected to, given what I had been reading before the upgrade from Maverick. I'd like to go on playing around with it. However, I would also like to continue to be able to use Gnome 2 sometimes, with Compiz and Emerald, as I have done in the past.
The trouble is that whenever I log into the "Ubuntu classic" desktop, it loads compiz, complete with the Unity plugin. Then I have to disable the Unity plugin manually every time, and do the same (with no panel) whenever I log into Unity.
Is there a way I can configure it to only load the Unity plugin in the Unity desktop, but not in the Gnome 2 desktop?
I just tried to update from 10.10 to 11.04, as the computer was restarting, it asked me to login from a terminal screen, and never fully loaded. I logged on and it stayed in the terminal screen, I tried rebooting and still nothing...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am new to slackware, but not new to linux. I recently installed slackware 13.37, and am enjoying it very much so far. The most annoying problem I currently have is that, after starting X, I cannot switch to a virtual terminal or even end X without having a problem. For instance, from the GUI if I hit ctrl-alt-F1, instead of going to the 1st virtual terminal, the screen fades quickly to black and does not return. I have not been able to make any progress on this problem, so any input would be greatly appreciated.The only thing worth noting really is that I'm using Fluxbox as my default window manager. Other than that I haven't done a lot of modifications to the base system other than installing some basic packages, but I had this problem since booting directly after installation of the os.
View 14 Replies View RelatedSo I pressed ctrl+alt+F3 and now my whole system is basically one big terminal - black screen and only accepts terminal commands. How do I go back to the 'normal' Ubuntu desktop screen? Rebooting only takes me back to the terminal command page described above. I can access root commands with sudo bash and my password, if fact all terminal commands seem to work. Is there a command I can use to go back to the regular desktop?
View 10 Replies View RelatedYesterday I attempt to use update-manager to do a distribution update. all was going good. i went to the kitchen to get a coffee and returned to a black screen with no cursor. the install couldnot have finished as it was still downloading updates i believe.
on reboot gnome did not respond so my last resort was to use kde for the time being. by running update-manager through kde I successfully updated to ubuntu 10.10. After completion of the update i restarted and gnome still had a non respinsive black screen on login.
Kde is still working fine.
Or at least how can I completely reinstall gnome.
(Using Ver. 10.04-lucid lynx) This is because, at random, Gnome environment will have some kind of problem, leaving me with a black screen, like the terminal but not it, where I can enter my password and that's just about all. There seems to be no way to enter the graphical linux environment. I was forced to wipe the hard drive clean twice because of this and both times I reinstalled lucid lynx.

Here's my specs:Processor: Intel Core i7 720QM (1.6 GHz)Memory: 6 GB DDR3 (1333 MHZ)Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 330M (1 GB VRAM)Hard Drive: 500 GB (7200 rpm)Native Resolution: 1920x1080I shrunk my Windows partition, installed Ubuntu on it's own partition with swap space, and mostly everything went fine. When I booted up, the resolution was set at something like 2048x1536, and it only displayed the top left corner of about 70% of the screen. When I changed to any other resolution, it looked really bad, and the whole screen still wasn't displayed.
Then something popped up telling me to install a driver for my graphics card, so I did, figuring it would fix the problem. When I booted and picked Ubuntu, I was stuck with a black screen. So I restarted and tried booting into safe mode. I got in, and it displayed the whole screen at 800x600. Still no luck in regular mode, however.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on what used to be a windows vista. I bought me a new graphics card today so that I could run dual screen (GeForce210). I saw a guide at [URL] and I followed it.
I typed: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
then I restarted my computer, once again as instructed I typed:
sudo nvidia-xconfig then logged out as instructed...
After I logged out the screen went black and I was not able to login. So I restarted my computer. Now when I turn on my computer I am getting this error and it's stopping at it.

I do have an external hard drive and at the moment I am using my Ubuntu disc to "try Ubuntu" I was going to try backing up everything I have but it will not let me access root because I am not logged on to that user, is there anything I can do to get pass this? I've called around and no one is willing to work on my computer since it is now running on Ubuntu 10.10

after installing openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, and rebooting the system a blank screen appears after booting process is completed.
Initially, I was thinking that was 'cause of the installation of ndiswrapper drivers (see command "modprobe ndiswrapper" not working - openSUSE Forums) but after the 4th (!) installation of openSUSE I really don't know what to think...
Sometimes openSuse boots regularly, and sometimes not... seems that there is no difference if I restart the PC or I turn it off and then off. Result is the same: sometimes I get the user desktop and sometimes not...
As explained in my previous post, I have checked the disk but all seems ok.
Now I cannot use the PC even in failsafe mode... I get always a black screen.
But what is more surprising is that I have 2 identical (identical!) PC with the identical hardware, and identical bios configuration. Only the monitor is different. Well, said that, one is working the the other one not...
To be honest, the working PC was an openSUSE 11.1 systems updated to openSUSE 11.2.
I think that must be something wrong on the distributed openSUSE DVD..
Here is the solution. (I don't know how to change the title of the original thread to indicate that the problem is solved, so I've started a new thread with a link. There must be an easier way!)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have scoured the web the last few hours and I have come across a plethora of similar problems relating to Ubuntu and Nvidia drivers. However, I still havent found a sufficient cure for the problem.
The exact problem I face is that as soon as I install the Nvidia recommended drivers using the "Hardware Driver Manager", I restart the system but it never gets past the login splash screen. After I log in it simply goes to a black screen and sits like this indefinately.
Does anyone know of a particular fix for this problem? I am at the end of my tether and there is no way I can use Linux if it means either getting a different graphics driver or sitting on a 800*600 resolution. (Not to mention I dont have acclerated 3d support...so no DVD playing!)

I can get to the Menu where I get to choose "Try without installing","Install Ubuntu","Test Disk," etc.After hitting ANY of the options, it hangs on a black screen, sometimes with a cursor blinking in the upper left, sometimes not. From all the research I've been able to dig up it seems it's a graphics card issue, but I haven't been able to find anything exactly like my problem as most everything I've been able to find say's theirs continues to install but then causes problems later, or they're trying to load on a dual boot system. I can't seem to get past that first "Install Ubuntu" selection. As soon as I hit enter it goes black.
I'm wondering if I can't load the nvidia drivers from a command line before I attempt to install from the live CD, but I don't know how to do that. I have the .run file downloaded but don't know where to go from there.
