i just tried to install Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 on my old Amilo Lifebook P Series. But after the boot screen and the choice to install Ubuntu i get stuck at the Ubuntu screen with the little dots on the bottom If I hit esc i can see the warning (process 257): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_(r) failed due to unknown user id (0)
For the last week or so, I've been getting the following warning whenever I do an update. Is it expected, or should it be bugged?
Code: Finished Transaction Test Transaction Test Succeeded Running Transaction Warning: RPMDB has been altered since the last yum transaction. Updating : pulseaudio-libs-0.9.21-1.fc12.x86_64 1/53 dd_wizard
Every time I use YUM from the CLI the following message shows up: Code: Warning: RPMDB altered outside of yum. ** Found 1 pre-existing rpmdb problem(s), 'yum check' output follows: wine-common-1.2.0-1.fc13.noarch has missing requires of wine-core = ('0', '1.2.0', '1.fc13') What is this? How to deal with it?
I've always used SSH to get to my Linux server and decided to figure out VNC. I've got VNC installed just fine and was logged, then I click Exit on the VNC screen and all hell broke loose. So I'm left with a gray useless screen, so I though I would kill the process. Did a ps -aux | grep vnc and saw what is running Then did a vncserver -kill :1 and vncserver -kill :2 Then typed vncserver
Now I'm getting Warning: blahblahblah:1 is taken because of /tmp/.X1-lock Remove this file if there is no X server blahblahblah:1 Warning: blahblahblah:2 is taken because of /tmp/.X2-lock Remove this file if there is no X server blahblahblah:2 So per the man pages I need to go here $HOME/.vnc and kill something. So How do I get to $HOME/.vnc? Is this a hidden location? I'm thinking I need to do a kill -9 .X1-lock per the above Warning message but where is that?
Since upgrading last week we keep getting a red icon warning msg for the ABRT system - it's not really something we want to have activated - is there any way to turn it off ?
I'm experiencing a problem with cron.hourly running mcelog.cron on Fedora 11:Quote:mcelog: warning: 18446744073709551600 bytes ignored in each recordmcelog: consider an updateI've read a dead end email thread here from February 2010 describing what I am seeing on Fedora here:Does anyone have any insight into this problem? This is relevant portion of strace(1)ing mcelog which shows /dev/mcelog is open()d and configured correctly:Quote:
I have a problem with the 'yum update': Code: Warning in file "/usr/share/applications/gnome-nautilus-folder-handler.desktop": usage of MIME type "x-directory/gnome-default-handler" is discouraged ("x-directory" is an old media type that should be replaced with a modern equivalent) Warning in file "/usr/share/applications/gnome-nautilus-folder-handler.desktop": usage of MIME type "x-directory/normal" is discouraged ("x-directory" is an old media type that should be replaced with a modern equivalent). And I also got this warning when installing VLC.
I had occasion to add a few lines to rc.sysinit. Turns out the lines syntax was wrong. Instead of the booting ignoring those lines and proceeding on, then giving me an error warning or perhaps dumping into the interactive mode it just hung up! After several tries at moving on I discovered ESC dropped me into some sort of unannounced shell I got the installation disk out and with the repair system option using VI I got the lines deleted and all went back to normal. Now my suggestion is that if something does not make sense in terms of syntax while booting then cover it by doing the above and ignoring it with a warning later.
I have a new (few months) HP Compaq laptop where I run Fedora 13. A couple weeks ago, it started complaining about too many bad sectors in the HD. What I have done is to remove palimpsest from load-on-start list, so I don't get the annoying message. I know the palimpsest Disk Utility has given problems like this (false positives) in Ubuntu, and F11. So my concerns are:
Is it normal in F13 to get those palimpsest warnings? Or should I consider the idea that my new HD is really failing? If this is a bug in palimpsest, is it going to be fixed soon?
When I run libreoffice from the terminal as root, I get
Code:
Over and over for about 7 time and then Code:
I've found several post referring to this error message, but the one's that were resolved, tended to include a reinstall, reboot and mysterious magic fairies fixing the problem.
"SELinux is preventing /bin/mailx from append access on the file /var/lib/rkhunter/rkhcronlog.OmRFCZOynG."
I tried to fix it by "# /sbin/restorecon -v /var/lib/rkhunter/rkhcronlog.OmRFCZOynG" as suggested by SELinux but it comes back with another warning, but with a different /rkhcronlog.xxxxxxxxx...
i think its just a way of rkhunter logging issue -. attached here is the actual error message by selinux.
Last week, i updated, my fedora. After that, during every boot up, I am getting a warning message like " Your hard disk may failing". It indicates that it is due to bad sectors. But I don't think so. There was a bug reported for a similar problem in fedora 11. I think it is not fixed yet. Hard disk is not having any problem during data access. Other OS including windows are not giving any warning message.
A week or so ago there was update to Fedora 14 that affected the wlan settings. Since then I keep getting a "low signal on..." warning. This flashes up at least every five seconds. I KNOW I have a low wi-fi signal! I don't need constantly reminding of it. Is there any way I can turn this warning off? I am using KDE4.6.1.
i'm heaving the following message at boot time: "Starting udev: udevd[114]: unknown key 'DEVTYPE' in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-cups-libusb.rules:6", i guess it's something about usb printing support but i am not sure, and i don't know how to fix it, does any of you guys know what this exactly means and how to fix it
Whenever I try to play a divx avi file in VLC it starts up, then shuts down again with no warning or error. Is this a bug in the current version. Kaffeine seems to play files OK. Using Fedora 11.
I see these boot.log warning and understand that the directory where these config files are kept has (or is) changing. Okay, but is the correct procedure to just move them over from the /etc/modprobe.conf dir to the /etc/modprobe.d file? I am wondering if some changes to those config files or those that they are related to must be also made? A portion of the boot.log is below.
Sometimes when I try to open some chat application i get a strange warning message asking for password. The message is that /usr/libexec/mission-control is trying to gain access of the system, please provide the password. On top of the message box it shows "Unlock Keyring".
This very weird, as I am also unable to do a print-screen when this message box is up.
what this message is all about and what does the executable /usr/libexec/mission-control do?
I had been receiving a rkhunter warning on my Fedora 14 server for quite some time now. Attempts to fix the error via information from Google searches have failed. I decided to have a look at bugzilla and what do you know, a fix. The warning:
Quote:
[03:29:08] Warning: The SSH and rkhunter configuration options should be the same: Warning: The SSH and rkhunter configuration options should be the same:
The fix, according to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=596775 is to change
PHP Code:
ALLOW_SSH_PROT_V1=2
to
PHP Code:
ALLOW_SSH_PROT_V1=0
I made the change and ran rkhunter again. No more error. I know everyone was wondering about this.
i finally get my server reformat and replace with redhat server v 5.5 ... [URL] and the same thing show in rkhunter log..
like this
" [18:00:36] /sbin/ifdown [ Warning ] [18:00:36] Warning: The command '/sbin/ifdown' has been replaced by a script: /sbin/ifdown: Bourne-Again shell script text executable [18:00:36] /sbin/ifup [ Warning ]
I'm trying to install Fedora10 on my new desktop. It has Windows 7 beta on it and Vista. It starts up fine and I select install. For some reason my wired usb keyboard will not respond unless I press the caps lock button while it loads the begging. (I don't know if another button will work, ive only used the caps button since i can see the light come on) once it loads i skip the disk check and anaconda runs, i get the warning (mini-wm:1462): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :1 .
So this has happened to me several times with fedora 12, and granted I havn't rebooted in a while but it seems that after I update and reboot, I cannot log into GDM any longer.I can login to the CLI, so and I checked all my logs to make sure it wasn't an authentication error. What does happen though, is when I try and login to KDE the screen flickers likes loading the desktop and then spits me back out to the login prompt.var/log/messages reports successful login. Here is what i did find
** (process:2220): DEBUG: Greeter session pid=2220 display=:0.0 xauthority=/var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-H2QyqS/database Failed to play sound: File or data not found
Just installed F15, was everything fine, but then gnome got away, from terminal I have<gnome-session:1951): Warning can't start display message. Before that I put in config file one extra line to start tint2 like <sleep 3 && tint2.Not sure was it the reason?
Wvdial give me this error PHP Code: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60--> Warning: section [Dialer Defaults] does not exist in wvdial.conf. --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
I have serious sound breakup with fedora 12. When I try I get: gnome-volume-control: WARNING **: Connection failed, reconnecting over and over. I know there is a price to be paid in terms of time and effort to run Linux. But I don't really want to have to fiddle with my sound system each time I upgrade. Every time I get my hopes up that Linux is easy enough to attract wide appeal, something comes along to show me I'm wrong. Most people don't want to live with the hassle. I will continue whether I get an answer or not. I will figure this out one way or another. But if more people were attracted to use Linux it would be easier for all of us.
