Fedora :: VNC Server Warning: Localhost:1 Is Taken Because Of /tmp/.X1-lock
Mar 31, 2009
I've always used SSH to get to my Linux server and decided to figure out VNC. I've got VNC installed just fine and was logged, then I click Exit on the VNC screen and all hell broke loose. So I'm left with a gray useless screen, so I though I would kill the process. Did a ps -aux | grep vnc and saw what is running Then did a vncserver -kill :1 and vncserver -kill :2 Then typed vncserver
Now I'm getting Warning: blahblahblah:1 is taken because of /tmp/.X1-lock Remove this file if there is no X server blahblahblah:1 Warning: blahblahblah:2 is taken because of /tmp/.X2-lock Remove this file if there is no X server blahblahblah:2 So per the man pages I need to go here $HOME/.vnc and kill something. So How do I get to $HOME/.vnc? Is this a hidden location? I'm thinking I need to do a kill -9 .X1-lock per the above Warning message but where is that?

I have a strange problem with evolution in Fedora 14. I run my own mail servers (Postfix and Dovecot) on localhost. This all worked great in F13 but now evolution refuses to connect to the localhost imap server. If I connect from my laptop (also F14) i.e. not from the localhost all works fine and great with evolution. I deleted all the config and started again to no avail. I also created a new user and logged in with this user and I still get the same so looks not to be user config issue.
evolution --debug=evo.debug.txt returns nothing useful.
Dovecot is listening on localhost as I can telnet to the imap port. Also other imap clients like Thunderbird work fine.

This is not intended to teach you about http.conf and its various options. This guide is intended to help with speeding up your web servers by assisting in protecting them from petty abuse, such as hotlinking and scraping, and by using options that yield better performance in general. The methods used in this guide address general concepts, but the implementations of the methods are completely arbitrary, and are tailored to my needs. Each user may want to make their own modifications to suit their own setup. Again, this is a general guide, meant for instruction purposes only. I will go over each significant section in the file, and explain what it does, and the reasoning for it.
This assumes that you WISH to disable the ability to use .htaccess, and to administrate your websites on the server level. If you have a shared hosting plan then you cannot administrate your server at all, and so some of these sections will not apply to you, but some of them will; the ones that still do, you will place in your .htaccess file, in place of your httpd.conf.
Some of the options in these files are default, and so they may not be explained at all. This thread is more about the non-standard configurations.
Most of these options are standard. Notice that there are extra AddTypes, for things such as .xpi files (firefox plugins, etc), and .ogg video files.
Also take note that we disable the option for .htaccess. This makes a dramatic speed increase. This is because if .htaccess is enabled, then for each request made to your server, apache must look in the directory where the requested file resides for an .htaccess file (it does not matter whether one is there or not, and the lookup is NOT cached, so it much be performed EACH request). If apache finds a file, it must parse it. Then it must look in the parent directory, and in the parent's parent, and so on, until it reaches root (/). This is done for EACH and EVERY request. Disabling .htaccess and administrating your server at the global level will make a dramatic difference on busy servers. On not so busy servers, you may not notice the difference.
Note that we disabled cgi-bin completely. This is because we're running mod_php, so we don't need cgi-bin. If you're not using it, lock it down so that no one else can .
Also note that we used AddOutputFilterByType to make sure that all text files were compressed before being sent across the wire. This saves bandwidth.
Of this section, most of these options cannot be set in .htaccess. Options such as the addtype and addhandler and addencoding CAN be set in .htaccess; the rest are global/sever level only.

I had been receiving a rkhunter warning on my Fedora 14 server for quite some time now. Attempts to fix the error via information from Google searches have failed. I decided to have a look at bugzilla and what do you know, a fix. The warning:
Quote:
[03:29:08] Warning: The SSH and rkhunter configuration options should be the same:
Warning: The SSH and rkhunter configuration options should be the same:
The fix, according to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=596775 is to change
PHP Code:
ALLOW_SSH_PROT_V1=2
to
PHP Code:
ALLOW_SSH_PROT_V1=0
I made the change and ran rkhunter again. No more error. I know everyone was wondering about this.

I have a need to set up the program TNG - The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding and run it on a local server (not on the Internet) for the purpose of learning the system prior to developing it on an actual website. I was told to use http://localhost on my browser (Mozilla Firefox). I get a message saying "That Works!", but it goes on to say that the contents of the web server have not yet been entered. The instructions for the downloaded files (which I unzipped) said to copy to the web root folder (the folder where the web server is located ?, I guess). But I don't know where it is or how to go about it. Can someone help? I already have MySQL and PHP, which are required to run this program, and I also have Apache installed on my Kubuntu 9.10 system.

HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain
Quote:
[root@system root]# hostname

[root@system root]# hostname -d

how to set the localhost and localdomain?
For the time being, the localhost is somehow being set correctly, but the localdomain is incorrect.

Running MYSQL 5.5.12 and MYSQL Workbench 1:5.2.34 on up-to-date Arch linux Set up MYSQL with root account and password. When running Workbench as user, got error when trying to connect :
Quote:
Cannot Connect to Database Server Your connection attempt failed for user 'root' from your host to server at 127.0.0.1:3306: Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' (111)
1 Check that mysql is running on server 127.0.0.1
2 Check that mysql is running on port 3306 (note: 3306 is the default, but this can be changed)
3 Check the root has rights to connect to 127.0.0.1 from your address (mysql rights define what clients can connect to the server and from which machines)
4 Make sure you are both providing a password if needed and using the correct password for 127.0.0.1 connecting from the host address you're connecting from
After commenting #skip-networking in my.cnf error changed to :
Quote:
Cannot Connect to Database Server Your connection attempt failed for user 'root' from your host to server at 127.0.0.1:3306: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 0
4 Make sure you are both providing a password if needed and using the correct password for 127.0.0.1 connecting from the host address you're connecting from
Copying my.cnf to /etc/ and running Workbench as root didn't change anything, i still get the second error The wiki [URl] says to enable MYSQL in /etc/hosts.allow but i didn't do it, i guess it is required only when trying to access MYSQL from remote hosts which i dont.

I need to test an application on a Ubuntu Server that works as a database server for the network.
On this server's /etc/mysql/my.cnf, I have:
Code:
# Instead of skip-networking the default is now to listen only on
# localhost which is more compatible and is not less secure.
bind-address = <server-ip-address>
This means that I can't access the mysql server from 127.0.0.1, right?
I tried adding the following entry to /etc/hosts.allow :
Code:
mysqld : 127.0.0.1 : allow
I feel like I need to restart the service that reads /etc/hosts.allow, is this approach correct?
Or on /etc/mysql/my.cnf I can have two (or more) bind-addresses entries?

I have a laptop with Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc, and I'm able to work on web programming on my local server while at home, connected to my network. But I would like to be able to work on the local websites when I'm not connected to any networks, both for demonstrating a site, or simply working on it.
I was surprised to find that I could not connect to localhost at all without a network connection. I tried my normal Google for a solution, but, of course, that was futile without a network.
Now, I'm at home, and of course, it works because I have wireless. I don't really want to disconnect that to figure it out, so I thought maybe some nice soul here might know how to do this. Surely it can't be hard, can it? But, it's certainly not obvious.

I have an Apache 2 server setup in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my lab computer. The server listens on port 80, by default. I also have another process listening on port 4000 - this is a special server that executes some Matlab and other application scripts. However, due to university policy (or some licensing/faculty regulation - not really sure), this port 4000 has been set as one that listens only to the localhost. Now, we need to allow a few of the scripts to be run by people remotely.
We tried to setup a web interface - they enter a few values into a HTML form and submit. This form has action="URl... (basically, we were hoping the external form turns data over to the internal form), thereby keeping everyone happy. However, it turns out that this didn't work - the server on port 4000 realizes that the request isn't internal.
What would be the best way of handling it? While we did consider port forwarding, we didn't want everything to be accessible from the internet - i.e. we wanted a tightly controlled interface when accessed from outside, but if someone writes a program on localhost, we want everything to go through as normal (i.e. the current setup). Is there a way to do this without duplication (i.e. setup a new port 5000, that has only the components we want the external users to access)?

I tried query something in XAMMP on Windows XP. It work!
Installed related software:
MySQL-server-5.5.11-1.rhel5

php53-mysql-5.3.3-1.el5_6.1
MySQL-client-5.5.11-1.rhel5

What I tried:
yum install php php-mysql
yum install php53 php53-mysql
Compiled php 5.3.6 soruce + MySQL 5.5 Server, Client, Shared, Shared-Compact Above software installed on different host. And the phpinfo showing MySQL I doubt something wrong in my php.ini. Used default php configuration.

We installed CentOS 5 at our school and are attempting to get 2 simple DNS servers online. These are simple name resolution servers for our network. We installed the needed caching nameserver packages via Yum and all seems to be well, but for some reason when the server is online, it fails to resolve DNS records except when we direct the requests to its 127.0.0.1 (localhost) interface. As for the server specs, the DNS server is running on a Virtual Machine, and the ESXi server has 2 quad-core Xeon CPU's with 48 Gigs of RAM (in short.. hardware is adequate.)
Here's more details:
When the box boots up, we can confirm that the named service is running and it resolves DNS records when we direct queries to its localhost address:
[root@ns1 ~]# dig hotbot.com @localhost
; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5_4.2 <<>> hotbot.com @localhost
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 55510
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 4, ADDITIONAL: 0 .....
; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5_4.2 <<>> hotbot.com @66.186.176.2
;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
What would cause the Named service to not answer DNS queries from the physical IP but only from it's internal IP?

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.
