Last week, i updated, my fedora. After that, during every boot up, I am getting a warning message like " Your hard disk may failing". It indicates that it is due to bad sectors. But I don't think so. There was a bug reported for a similar problem in fedora 11. I think it is not fixed yet. Hard disk is not having any problem during data access. Other OS including windows are not giving any warning message.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow to diagnose a possibly failing harddisk. This is the system disk of a Windows XP machine that will not boot. It gets to the "progress bar" that runs across the screen a few times but then it always stops in the same spot. If I boot from a live Ubuntu CD what tools should I use to find out if the disk itself is failing? The disk is under warranty but if I take it to the shop and the problem turns out to be software errors then I have to pay so I want to be sure what is going on before going there..

I tried to run Windows, then started getting errors? This is strange: I've been running Linux the whole day. I last used the Windows hard drive was 2 days ago. Now its screwing up. Using F12 with a LVM Volume, Single disk with OS on and boot partition. The OS HDD is getting i/o errors, but will still boot to the login screen. I've removed the HDD and connected it to a Fedora Live OS on my laptop, connected the HDD and it registers as :

Any way to mount the partition to allow me to try and get some data back, or if trying to do a full backup of the drive you can get it to ignore i/o errors.
I am using SLES 10 SP3(x86_64). I was trying to install gtk/wxwidget through yast.
After that i rebooted my system, now system is failing to load in GUI mode.

It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

I did a bit of reading and it seems that most people suggest using badblocks to first get a list of badblocks from the drive and save it to a file. Then use e2fsck to then mark the blocks listed in the badblocks file as bad on the hard drive. My problem here is that this drive is part of a RAID5 array that hosts my OS. I wanted to confirm if this was still the correct process.I boot to my Live Debian disk, stop the raid array if it's active. Then run badblocks + e2fsck commands on the drive in question and then reboot.
OS: Debian unstable 32bit, kernel 2.6.32-2, grub 1.98 from late january 2010 (only have working net-access from work now, so I am grabbing information from memory). EXT3 and EXT4 support is compiled into the kernel along with chipset/scsi/sata support (not as modules), and I have tested to boot ext3 with it before proceeding. Prereq: my old disk started to have too much S.M.A.R.T errors, so I bought another one, put in a USB cabinet, added swap and ext4 partition/filesystem to it, and copied over all data from the old system to the new that was mounted at /dest using the command "find ./ -xdev -print0 | cpio -paV0 /dest". Swiched disks, so I now have the ext4 disk sitting at /dev/sda (partitions: sda1 => ext4, sda2 => swap), and booted into rescue-mode from cdrom, using /dev/sda1 as root with a shell on. After doing this, I performed the following commands:
mount --bind /dev /dest/dev
chroot /dest
modified the /etc/default/grub to instruct the kernel to boot using ext4, ran grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
ran update-grub to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg (which looks as it should) After doing this, grub finds my partition and mounts it. It however stalls with the message: "warning: unable to open an initial console" and does nothing after this point. I have no ramdisk, but my old kernel booted fine from ext3 (and still does if I copy it to a ext3 partition), and since the ext4 support is compiled into the kernel - should I really need a ramdisk?
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
Upon installing Fedora on my Samsung NC10, I loved it. It feels stable and isn't cluttered with pointless apps. However I was immediately greeted by Palimsest Disk Utility warning me that the 'reallocated sector count' on my hard drive is going bad. I'm not too sure what any of it means but here's the statistics;

/dev/sdb is a usb flash drive that has pmagic (not sure of the version, but it's 2.6.32.9-pmagic kernel, so I think it's the latest version). I'm posting from pmagic right now because I don't want the failing disk to get any worse until I get this sorted. I burned a Fedora ISO onto a CD and I love it. Now, I want to add it as a dual-boot to my hard disk. I divided Drive C into two (formatted) partitions one labeled Linux.During an attemped installation, I was able to find (thru "edit") the partition called "Linux." But one of the next questions threw me: it asked for a "mount point."I have no idea what that means (and yes I have readthe guide onthis site).

Sometimes it may be necessary, or just convenient, to install Fedora from the DVD ISO file located on a local hard drive. The method I describe here does that, with two requirements. It uses GRUB4DOS, and the necessary files must be located on a FAT32 or EXT2/3/4 partition. Create the new partition and name it "FEDORA". It does not need to be a primary partition, and can be deleted later. An existing partition can also be used, but you will either need to change it's name as shown or put the correct name in the kernel line of the menu.lst file when that is created in step 5.
Use your favorite ISO program to open or mount the the DVD ISO image file and extract the /images directory to the root of the partition. Copy the DVD ISO image file to the root directory of the partition. Prepare a method to boot GRUB4DOS. See the following GRUB4DOS tutorial page for details about that task. [URL] Create a menu.lst file for GRUB4DOS with the following lines and place it in the appropriate location for your installation of GRUB4DOS.

For the GRUB4DOS direct-mapping to work, the ISO file cannot be fragmented. If the partition is fresh (newly created), that shouldn't be a problem. However, using an existing partition will likely fragment the file, and you'll need to defragment it with a Windows utility (FAT32) first. I've actually only done this on FAT32, but EXT should work too, theoretically... Translation - use FAT32 on a new partition.
I would like to ask if i plan using fedora 14 as my main OS (for server). How many Hard Disk that fedora 14 can support? Because i plan using 2TB x 6 Hard Disk. Does it support?

Now the drive has started making rumbling noises and doesn't always boot.The engineer from Dell is coming tomorrow to replace the drive, but what can I do about transferring the whole old drive to the new one in full working order, quickly?
I've been using rsync to keep backups of my home folder, so I've got the data side covered. But I don't really want to spend the next couple of weeks re-installing all the software, printers etc all over again. So is there a quick, easy way of replicating the old drive with partitions, VB, etc (I'm not that good at using the terminal) ?
I'm using xubuntu on a box that has 2 drives. One is quite small mounted as / and the other larger drive is mounted as /home Both drives are IDE The /home drive has had some failure in the past & occasionally creates errors. Is there any way of identify which sectors are bad (or good) and isolating them to try & get some more use out of the drive?
It won't be used for storing valuable data.It is an old box for visitors to use. But it would be handy to use it to store some large read-only audio files. I've installed smartctl & could post output from there if you think it is useful. I can't work out how to interpret the information.

The boot disk (WinXP with grub2 on MBR) is failing. I need to replace it, pronto.
Do I need to get any data from the MBR on the failing disk before removing it?
Should I make the Karmic disk bootable and install grub on it before removing the failing boot disk?
Once I have Windows (re)installed on a new disc (which will still be /dev/sda) I want to install GRUB2 to its MBR and re-instate the old (current) boot options. How should I do this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedOn my FC11 installation Palimpset Disk Utility icon in the top menu bar is reporting that I have a disk failure with the caption "one or more disks is failing".When I open up the details section in Pilimpset I can see that "2 sectors are failing",I have checked this with gparted checking facility and it reports that the disk is OK.What I would like to do is to check the disk using a command like tool or ofline tool, which would then tell me where those bad sectors are on that partition so that I can resize it (using gparted) and have the bad sectors in NON ALLOCATED DISK SPACE.
