Fedora :: 7/9/2010 Update Stopped System From Booting?
Jul 9, 2010
This morning I did an update on a current F13 system with NVIDIA Graphics card. System gets to a complete white bar across the screen followed by "FEDORA 13" . This all starts blinking and goes no further.

Bit of an odd one this. My ZTE MF100 (on O2) had been working happily on my 10.04 laptop, but today is not recognised - e.g. no device listed by lsusb, nor error messages in dmesg at boot.
Re-plugging the device after boot gives me dmesg errors:
[ 1691.680162] usb 5-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 9
[ 1691.810163] usb 5-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[ 1691.990379] hub 5-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
[Code]....
I can't see any suspicious entries in /var/log/dpkg, but I'm attaching a copy of the recent anyway, along with output for lsusb -vv.

Last night I couldn't access my webserver, so I ran downstairs and turned on the monitor, only to find a "GRUB" prompt on the screen. I don't really know much about grub, but it didn't seem to accept any input anyway, so I rebooted, and after the server went through all its hardware checks, the "GRUB" prompt reappeared, still unresponsive to any input.
Next I booted with the F11 DVD and selected "Rescue Mode" from the menu. That looked hopeful. I was able to mount my filesystem, but I have no idea what I'm looking for or how to fix it. The manual hasn't been too helpful, and I haven't found any "how to guides" that address this kind of thing.
How does a solid reliable system like this just stop working? How can I get it back on its feet, and is there anything I can do to prevent whatever happened from happening again? Am I doing anything wrong?
This server has been running nonstop and trouble-free for about four years now. I upgraded from F10 to F11 without incident. I'm running Apache httpd, Tomcat (through httpd via ajp13), and sshd (only accessible from the local network). I update everything with yum on a weekly basis. The server is on a private network with port 80 NATted through the cable modem and a wireless router. The wireless network is secured with WPA2 Personal.
I was just about to upgrade to F13 before this happened, and I'm now wondering if I should do a clean install and start over, or if installing F13 as an upgrade will fix whatever is wrong with the system. I've always felt you had to get everything in working order before you even think of upgrading, but I don't know if that applies to Linux. Will I just end up with a F13 system that won't boot?

Fedora 14 on my laptop has randomly decided that it hates me. The system stops booting after "starting atd", right when its starting X. It "hangs" after the fedora logo, though it will reboot when I try "ctrl-alt-delete". I can see that haldaemon is failing to start, and when I boot the kernel with "selinux=0" it gives me an error message:
error while loading shared libraries: libdbus-glib-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. NetworkManager fails with same message. the .so file is in its proper directory, where it has been all along. I've tried booting into runlevels 2 and 3. No luck there either. It'll boot to the login prompt, but as soon as I under my userid the screen flashes. I managed to get the error message it was giving me before the flash: inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 503: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT` failed!
I can boot into single user mode just fine. I've checked dmesg and Xorg logs, but I honestly don't know what I'm looking for (and I imagine that those logs would be useless if I boot into runlevel 1, since the error is at higher runlevels. But I can't get the logs for those because the computer just hangs. SSH and networking are never enabled before the hang.)
I'm at a loss here. I use the machine for both school and work [and I have quite a bit of both to do today] and I've been trying to get it to boot normally for hours now. Anyone have any ideas that I could try?

I got 'Mandriva 2010.2 One KDE Europe - Americas' live image with a tech magazine as an .iso. The live usb image created with Unetbootin on my Mint 10 of the iso won't boot. All I get a warning no operating system or something. I tried the Mandriva-seed script but it gives an error
Quote:
GLib-GIO:ERROR:/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.26.0/gio/gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Also tried the isotostick script too but it too won't work. Here is the error message
Quote:
Not verifying image...(no checkisomd5 in Ubuntu so skipping)!
./isotostick.sh: line 103: /lib/udev/vol_id: No such file or directory
USB filesystem must be vfat or ext[23]
Cleaning up to exit...
note that the file system of the usb drive is FAT32 and the md5sum of the iso is the same as that specified in the website !!

When I boot from the CD, it starts to boot and then continously repeats:
Code
Initializing gfx code...
boot:
gfxboot:
It stops on boot for about 10 seconds each time then gfxboot for not even a second before the cycle continues. I have tried more than one CD, so I don't think that is the issue. It even did the exact same thing when I tried it on PCLOS 2010.10. Both versions I tried were KDE. trying to figure out how to get past this.

When using yum update, can a program have been wrongly updated (or marked updated without finishing the update)? I ask this question because I'm new to Linux and my connection stopped during a yum update and the console text was strange when I did CTRL + C. (Did it 2 times (starting the yum update and because of no more answers and pressed CTRL + C)).

I'm using fedora 13, and it's been a while that yum auto-update doesn't pop up.Some time ago, when updates were available, a notification popped up asking for update (and I love this feature because I didn't have to check manually).Under System>Preferences>Software Update i've Daily check for updates and weekly check for major updates, with no automatic installs. And doing System>Administration>Software updates, it load and updates correctly, just it's no longer automatically checked.

I know very little about SE Linux and I've heard that in some situations it's better to disable it. For a home user, is it important? Does it improve your life ? or does it get in the way ?
Last week some update stopped my printing and I had to install the new hplip from HP because it wasn't in the Fedora repos to correct the problem. I don't know if SELinux had anything to do with it, but today when I disabled SELinux a few minutes later I get a star up on the toolbar and when I clicked on it it mentioned something about hplip. It wouldn't make any sense to me but maybe this has happened to others.

After performing the periodic update on 2010-05-26 including libc, libc6 and libgtk2.0 my system fails on boot with the following error message:
Code:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! If I boot from the 10.04 live CD, all partitions on the hard drive are visible, mountable, and pass all file system checks.

Yesterday i was prompted by my update manager to update some packages. I really don't remember which but i updated.
After reboot the box now kernel panics. I don't believe i get a ubuntu splash screen, and at this point i can't figure out how to get to my grub, in case a kernel was upgraded and it's possible to boot to different kernel.
i noticed some words like 'mantis', 'oops' and 'dvb_core' was a part of the text i get on the screen.
Can this be because of a dvb* upgrade that breaks something important ?
If needed, i should be able to boot via liveCD, or i could take a picture of the errors.

I'm running 13.1 x86_64 on my laptop. Yesterday the first batch of security updates were released, which I installed without problems; however, I'm bugged by the fact that that the Firefox packages for 13.0 and 13.1 have the same name. (see below)
Updated package for Slackware x86_64 13.0:[URL].._slack13.0.txz Updated package for Slackware x86_64 13.1:[URL]..._slack13.0.txz They aren't the same file--their listed md5 hashes on ftp.slackware.com differ, plus I downloaded both packages and confirmed that both check against their respective listed hashes.
So...I suppose my question is this: Is this simply a mistake in naming, and if so, could it possibly produce a problem somehow?

I need some advice on how to troubleshoot a booting problem. On my F12 installation, kernel 2.6.31.12-174 (and prior) all work fine. Kernels 2.6.32.x all stop booting at "starting udevd" -- even the cursor on the console stops blinking. My system is P4 2.4 GHz with 2 GB RAM on Asus P4PE -- old, but pretty generic.

The desktop effects on my system stopped working. They were working fine up to a couple of days ago. Now it says I need to check my configuration for xorg. How do you do that?
Also this appears to have started after another user was using my system and crashed it. They said that it just shut-off with no explanation as to what happened.
lspci -v shows this
HTML Code:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS300M AGP [Radeon Mobility 9100IGP] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device ff02
Flags: bus master, fast Back2Back, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 66, IRQ 16
[Code].....
How do I get back to the systems default drivers?
I do NOT wish to have to reinstall F14 yet again because the system has been very stable since the last install.

Having several distros on my computer (including Windows), I prefer BING (BootIt NG) as an overall boot manager. This way, I just install a distro together with GRUB to its dedicated partition, and keep full control over what partitions are available/visible and bootable when family members use the computer.Yesterday, I tried to update Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) and got a problem with the newly available GRUB (1.98-ubuntu7): it said that installing GRUB to a partition was a "BAD" idea, and, luckily, refused to update. I've noticed this behaviour during my last install of Sidux (great distro to keep track of what's happening at the KDE front, by the way). Same problem, same message. Result: no more new Sidux releases...
What's going on? Is this intended behaviour and thus making it impossible for people to manage their booting their own way? Are we talking about a bug here? There seems to be a mentioning of this behaviour on Launchpad, but it's unclear whether it's a bug or not; at least to me.

Yesterday i have installed F14 and then went to the comand line to update the system via yum update. It was about 860MB of updates in 430 packages. The strange thing is that only one package was a delta rpm and all other were normal rpm. Is Fedora giving up on presto or it needs some special configuration?
