View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 on daughter's laptop. It's been working perfectly but suddenly it's refusing to boot. Sadly, she's now half way around the world so I can't fiddle around to get it working. She's posted me a photo of the screen.
Here's what seems to be the important part:

mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.
So, first of all, this is my sisters computer so I am not sure exactly what happened. I had installed ubuntu alongside WinXp a couple of weeks ago. Today she booted into xp for the first time and accidentally launched some system restore option. A dialog box appeared and told that if she continued, everything on her disk would be erased. apparently, there was no indication of how to not to continue, so she shut it down by holding the power button.
Now, it won't boot. Not even to grub, it just cycles where the screen comes on, a courser blinks in the top left, and then it automatically restarts after about 5 seconds and repeats (unless one launches BIOS configuration). I assume something about the MBR has gotten messed up. I tried booting off a USB thumb drive, but it just accessed the drive for a second or two, and then went back into the cycle (I tried every USB socket, and the BIOS was configured properly to boot off external USB, also, I was able to boot my computer from the USB)
how to proceed if I can't even boot off of USB. Oh, the computer is Asus Eee pc netbook (no CD drive).
My windows vista stopped booting so I had re-install vista. Now that I have done that Vista automatically boots every time I turn on my computer. I can still see that the Linux partition is there but I do not know how to boot it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm dual-booting Ubuntu 10.4 (grub2) and Windows 7 (x64). Something stomped on my grub install on the windows boot sector (probably windows). I was getting errors like "Cannot find disk.." I updated my grub.cfg to what I thought should work and now I'm getting errors like "cannot find C/H/S values".
I've attached the RESULTS.txt. Its really a simple install, although I do have a RAID5 array; the RAID disks are just for data and hold no OS files. Both OS's are on /dev/sdd.
I had Ubuntu installed in Windows XP (with Wubi). One day my motherboard, let's just say stopped working. So, I had to replace my motherboard..., well I bought a new PC, but with the Hard Drive of the old one. When I first started it i got the same boot screen letting me choose between Ubuntu and Windows XP. Well, you can pretty much figure out that none of them worked. So, I installed Windows 7 (as the new configuration is pretty powerful). So, from the boot menu Windows XP was replaced by Windows 7 but still Ubuntu stays there and I can't figure out how to delete it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedLast night I couldn't access my webserver, so I ran downstairs and turned on the monitor, only to find a "GRUB" prompt on the screen. I don't really know much about grub, but it didn't seem to accept any input anyway, so I rebooted, and after the server went through all its hardware checks, the "GRUB" prompt reappeared, still unresponsive to any input.
Next I booted with the F11 DVD and selected "Rescue Mode" from the menu. That looked hopeful. I was able to mount my filesystem, but I have no idea what I'm looking for or how to fix it. The manual hasn't been too helpful, and I haven't found any "how to guides" that address this kind of thing.
How does a solid reliable system like this just stop working? How can I get it back on its feet, and is there anything I can do to prevent whatever happened from happening again? Am I doing anything wrong?
This server has been running nonstop and trouble-free for about four years now. I upgraded from F10 to F11 without incident. I'm running Apache httpd, Tomcat (through httpd via ajp13), and sshd (only accessible from the local network). I update everything with yum on a weekly basis. The server is on a private network with port 80 NATted through the cable modem and a wireless router. The wireless network is secured with WPA2 Personal.
I was just about to upgrade to F13 before this happened, and I'm now wondering if I should do a clean install and start over, or if installing F13 as an upgrade will fix whatever is wrong with the system. I've always felt you had to get everything in working order before you even think of upgrading, but I don't know if that applies to Linux. Will I just end up with a F13 system that won't boot?
Fedora 14 on my laptop has randomly decided that it hates me. The system stops booting after "starting atd", right when its starting X. It "hangs" after the fedora logo, though it will reboot when I try "ctrl-alt-delete". I can see that haldaemon is failing to start, and when I boot the kernel with "selinux=0" it gives me an error message:
error while loading shared libraries: libdbus-glib-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. NetworkManager fails with same message. the .so file is in its proper directory, where it has been all along. I've tried booting into runlevels 2 and 3. No luck there either. It'll boot to the login prompt, but as soon as I under my userid the screen flashes. I managed to get the error message it was giving me before the flash: inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 503: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT` failed!
I can boot into single user mode just fine. I've checked dmesg and Xorg logs, but I honestly don't know what I'm looking for (and I imagine that those logs would be useless if I boot into runlevel 1, since the error is at higher runlevels. But I can't get the logs for those because the computer just hangs. SSH and networking are never enabled before the hang.)
I'm at a loss here. I use the machine for both school and work [and I have quite a bit of both to do today] and I've been trying to get it to boot normally for hours now. Anyone have any ideas that I could try?
I found out that my installation was incomplete. So I reinstalled Debian using the businesscard image on a DVD. It worked fine, but I have a hardware constraint on my computer. I have two SATA hard drives and one SATA CD/DVD drive, and only two SATA connections on the motherboard. So, to install Debian I had to remove one hard drive and put the CD/DVD drive. When I saw that Debian was working, I removed the CD/DVD drive, and that's when Debian stopped booting. It said it couldn't find tty and opened BusyBox, giving me a command-line interface, and the line started with (initramfs) before the commands (with the parenthesis).

I have been carrying out updates of both Vista & SuSE whenever i operate in them.
One (Not So) Fine Day, when i Choose from the Grub loader "Microsoft Windows Vista SP2" option it just din't boot into Vista. I have Tried many a time.
My First doubt was towards Vista only, so i choose the "Windows Recovery Mode" option from Grub. It went into the Recovery mode. I ran Memory Tests on Windows Partition, took its own sweet time, whatever missing indexes and all it carried out and finally gave the Thumbs Up result. After that, i carried out Startup Repairs, all came out well. So, Yet again i restarted and tried to get in Vista. Nope, dint work.

Kernels 2.6.32.x all stop booting at "starting udevd" -- even the cursor on the console stops blinking. My system is P4 2.4 GHz with 2 GB RAM on Asus P4PE -- old, but pretty generic.

After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. I have taken out a new subscription to RS and instead of getting the files I am receiving small html referer files. In theory this should be corrected by ticking a direct download setting on RS, but it is making no difference. I can manually download the files so I am certain the files are on RS in full form. I am also successfully auto logging into RS and this means the name and password are being handed over correctly

sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start/stop
But when I wrote this stop command, everything looks good, except sshd was still running. I looked into script it uses start-stop-deaemon to kill through pid. The script always kills process, but immediately, new process of sshd was emerged (by it self - with new process ID)! I don't get it. I'm sick of my not understanding of the proglem! The new process of sshd has parent with id 1 (init). How is this possible? How does it come, that ssh can not be turn off and nobody has noticed or complain about it?
After 2 hours of googling I managed to find this command:
sudo service ssh stop
and ssh finally got killed. Yeahh! After issuing this command /etc/init.d/ssh start/stop work correctly. But only to restart of system. Is this some king of super-uber command and we should not user /etc/init.d/ scripts anymore?
The strange thing is, ssh is run by itself after system start-up (without being in /etc/rc...).
yesterday i was downloading a .tar file using wget command from my terminal..the file was about 50mb . i had downloaded around 25mb when suddenly i had some network problem and i stopped downloading. so is it possible to start that download from the point i stopped i mean after 25mb

Usually I have tried on old machines built of left over bits, but this time I tried version 11.04 on a fairly modern Acer Aspire 7520 laptop. I used a wired connection during setup and then set up the wireless. All was fine and easy, and I actually imagined that I might finally escape from Microsoft. Then a week later the networking stopped working on both wired and wireless. My windows machines and android phone connect wirelessly. My Windows desktop connects using the same ethernet cable. I tried re-installing Ubuntu from the original disk, but now I can't even get a wired connection during setup, so it seems to be something Ubuntu has done to the hardware settings (that is a surmise).

Now when I reboot grub throws me in the grub shell, if I then type configfile /grub/grub.cfg it starts grub like its supposed to. Tho I cant seem to be able to go straight to the grub menu and no to the shell.
Have just started to use look at crontab. I could use Scheduled Tasks as well as crontab -e in terminal.
I must have changed something because now Scheduled Tasks just seems to load then dropout. Loading a task through terminal is accepten (crontab -e) but doesn't work.
It was working fine. Now, when I boot the computer(9.10 32 bit), I get the message asking me about the certificate. But Pandora never seems to load. I tried to reinstall the AIR app, but it tells me that it is running. I can't find it though. If I try to open Pandora again, nothing ever happens
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a call from a friend who did the distrubution upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 and all was well for about 2 weeks and then his desktop icons disappeared. He kept running it that way and never looked for help until a couple of days ago he tried to plug in a card reader to get some pictures from his camera and nothing happened. that was when he discovered that he couldn't run Nautilus at all. I had him purge nautilus and reinstall it but then he couldn't even log in to Ubuntu. Very strange indeed. Anyone else experience this? After going over all the settings and finding them what they should be, I just installed 10.04 and all is well except that he lost a few photos.
